Cafe Rider @ Dubai

Propelled by founders and baristas from around the globe, including South Africa, Russia and the Philippines, Cafe Rider reflects Dubai’s remarkably diverse urban population. This cavernous venue promises photo opportunities galore for social media enthusiasts, since it is set in a warehouse-like showroom filled with American-made motorcycles.

The coffee, which employs U.S.-roasted beans, is excellent - fun combos with funky monikers like 'Oil Drip' that make use of elements like orange juice & house-made caramel, resulting in beverages with perky nuances that perfectly complement the coffee. 'The Alpine' is a refreshing drink to counter Dubai's perpetual heat, with a scoop of pine nuts that adds texture to the coffee. It makes sense now that Cafe Rider's head barista represented the UAE in the 2015 World Barista Championship.

Local House & Majlis @ Dubai

Camels saunter into the spotlight - Local House is all about camel burgers (gamy but juicy) & camel milkshakes (a bit salty), a very fun & uniquely Middle Eastern twist on American fare.

Local House
Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Camel milk coffee (aka 'camellatte' & 'camelccino') & camel milk soft-serve ice cream are the chief attractions at the Dubai Mall's camel milk cafe - perhaps an acquired taste, with a distinct flavour that somehow seems to speak of barns & farmyards.

Creekside Cafe @ Dubai

One of this city's most atmospheric cafés, with an unassailable alfresco view of the saltwater creek in the soulful heart of old Dubai. The food infuses contemporary recipes with local ingredients; try the French toast with Arabic coffee custard, hickory-smoked date jam, pistachio whipped cream & pomegranate syrup (AED35) & the poached farm eggs with spicy saffron tomato sauce, chami-yoghurt & zaatar-spiced flat bread (AED45), with cold, creamy iced blended latte (AED15) to help beat the heat.

Almaz by Momo @ Mall of the Emirates, Dubai

This intensely atmospheric establishment transports customers to another world beyond its confines in one of Dubai's gargantuan malls; Almaz tackles North African cuisine - delicious dishes like pan-fried chicken liver with pomegranate sauce (order it!), pigeon pastilla flavoured with almonds & cinnamon (order it too!) & couscous with a mixed meat platter of roasted lamb shoulder, charcoal chicken & merguez sausage, plus semolina & vegetable broth (order everything!). Alas, alcohol is verboten, so customers must make do with mocktails that blend, say, pomegranates with lychee, raspberries & rose water.
