Sarang Cha, Lot 10

Malaysian coffee, Japanese teas, plus plenty of kitten-loving imagery: Sarang Cha is a serene new nest for quenching the thirst in downtown KL, offering milky pleasures that span a Kopi Latte brewed with Borneo-cultivated beans, specifically Tenom in Sabah (RM6.90), to the Coconut Matcha Latte spiked with chia seeds and sweetened with organic cane sugar (RM12.90).

Swee Lee Social Club, Lot 10

By Aiman Azri

Dig through Dylan on vinyl, then dig into apple pie (RM13) at Swee Lee Social Club, the new in-house cafe of Asia's largest music retailer's outpost in Lot 10. Pastries and sweet treats come from independent Malaysian bakers Little Tee Cakes, while coffee is from the local Collective roaster, making this a worthwhile spot in Bukit Bintang to snack on a moist banoffee cupcake (RM8) and sip a satisfying cup of magic (RM8; steamed milk poured over a double ristretto) or filter coffee (RM12) while Oasis and Clapton play on the speakers.

Swee Lee Social Club
T16 & T17, 3rd Floor, Lot 10, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Bukit Bintang 50250 Kuala Lumpur.
Daily, 10am-10pm. Tel: +6012-983-3420 (Swee Lee Music Company)

Takumi Craft Bar @ Isetan The Japan Store

Takumi seeks to spirit us away with a distinctive diversity of Japanese wine, beer & whisky, available for retail purchases or to imbibe at this gleaming bar on Isetan The Japan Store's food market level. Stop by to sip on enjoyably easy-drinking glasses of vintages from Yamanashi's Chateau Katsunuma, Tottori's Hojyo Winery & Kyoto's Tamba Wine (RM30-RM43). For a refreshing experience, the Hokkaido Melon Wine (RM28) conveys a mellow fruitiness that may transport your senses to a lush, cool-climate orchard. Craft beers are offered on draught at the bar, including through a tasting flight of three kinds for RM50.

The bar opens up cans of gingered Pacific saury, Habanero sardines, wine-steamed mussels, smoked octopus, salt-roasted top shells & lemon peppered oysters (RM12.90-RM40.90) for drinkers who need a bite. Alternatively, scour the mall's market for sashimi or steamed Japanese sweet potatoes to devour here; only food purchased within Isetan The Japan Store can be consumed at Takumi. Also note that a minimum order of one drink per seat applies at the bar.

Hedge & Snail, Shepherd Star, MiniMe, Barcook, Character De Coffee & Grab

Life slows to a leisurely crawl over coffee within the calm confines of Hedge & Snail on the lowest level of Lot 10, a respite from bustling Bukit Bintang outside. The cafe's house blend comprises Brazilian Mountain Mogiana, Columbian Inza, Guatemalan Antigua & Indian Kaapi Royale beans, for pairing with truffle egg mayo sandwiches, scones & carrot cakes.

One of the Kuchai neighbourhood's popular haunts; the menu includes hearty smoked salmon salads & bottled cold coffee.

MiniMe's mini-tacos might look diminutive but they're not puny in flavour, topped individually with soft-shell crab, squid, fish & tempura prawns, dressed with pineapple salsa on a base of garlic lemon aioli. Not a bad snack, followed up with popsicles in fruity flavours like durian, mango or grape.

This Singaporean bakery chain recently launched its first Malaysian branch at The Gardens Mall; we nibbled on two of its longtime bestselling buns - the raisin cream cheese & the salted egg yolk - but both tasted pretty generic, with nondescript flavours & textures. Maybe we should have asked the staff here whether they could warm up the bread first.

It's not all about caffeine at Character De Coffee - the menu also comprises spaghetti tossed in the cafe's kitchen-made pesto sauce, crispy-fried chicken chops & various cakes & pastries that mainly cater to customers seeking wallet-friendly offerings.
