DP Ice Cream Gula Apong @ Kampung Baru

Kuching's gula apong ice cream is now available in the heart of KL - made with nipah palm sugar, these soft serves are mellow & mild, reasonably smooth & natural-tasting, more than faintly evocative of gula melaka. A basic cone costs only RM2, but it's worth splurging on a RM6 large serving that's generously showered with gula apong syrup, crushed Oreos & nuts. This is DP Ice Cream Gula Apong's first peninsular outpost following seven branches in Sarawak, & we wouldn't mind seeing more.

DP Ice Cream Gula Apong
57B-4, Jalan Daud, Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. Opposite parking lot of Hospital Pakar Al Islam. Open 12pm-11pm, except Mondays.

Le'Park @ Nasi Lemak Malaya, Kampung Baru

Perhaps Kampung Baru's closest thing to a hipster hideout, Le'Park is a friendly hangout that serves this neighbourhood's signature offering - respectably fragrant nasi lemak with ayam goreng rempah (RM8) - & a handful of other temptations, notably spicy-sweet lontong kering dendeng paru (RM7.50), optionally paired with serunding daging, plus other quintessential Malaysian suppertime crowd-pleasers like kuay teow goreng kering & bihun kari, bolstered by beverages that pack a flavoursome punch, such as Soda Gumbira & Dayang Senandong (with lychees & cincau). Not a bad bet for a bite in this area.

Jalan Raja Uda, Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. Mon-Fri, 530pm-12am

The Food Parlor @ Kelana Jaya, Village House @ Casa Tropicana & Line Clear Nasi Kandar @ Kampung Baru

From Malacca: The Food Parlor has its roots in Malaysia's historic state - the parents of the outlet's co-founder Cheryl reputedly run an eatery in Malacca's Portuguese Settlement, so it's natural that this casual venue specialises in cherished Eurasian family recipes that Malaccans know well. You'll find fairly priced, fuss-free rice sets (RM12.50-RM14.50) that emphasise chicken pongteh (respectable), ambilek long beans curry & captain's curry. For a fun Kristang-Italian twist, try the Devil's Spaghetti (RM14.50), a rich, saucy pasta with Devil's Curry gravy, tossed with chunks of chicken, onions & parmesan.

The Food Parlor
Ground Floor, Kelana Sentral Apartments, Jalan Bahagia, Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Daily, 9am-6pm. Tel: 016-353-4340

From Kelantan: Village House is a kopitiam helmed by a family from Malaysia's north-east, with a focus on authentic rice recipes that range from nasi ayam percik (RM13.90, with a whole flame-grilled chicken leg in coconut sauce) to nasi bungkus Kak Wok (RM8.90, featuring firm, steaming-hot rice packed in paper with small, chopped pieces of fried chicken, pungent sambal chilli sauce & light, sweetish gulai gravy - altogether addictive), as well as great-grain mainstays such as nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, nasi paprik, nasi ulam & nasi lemak. Special thanks to reader Andrew Toh for pointing out this place to us.

Village House Kopitiam
B-0-1, Block B, Casa Tropicana, No.5, Jalan Persiaran Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Daily, 10am-10pm. Tel: 03-78865565

From Penang: Line Clear has long been one of the northern island's most popular haunts for nasi kandar, its heritage reaching back to before World War II. Its legacy now extends to KL with a new branch in Kampung Baru - an instant hit, with scores of patrons patiently queuing for half an hour during peak periods. We reached the end of the efficiently manned line & had a plate of steamed white rice heaped with fish roe (irreproachable), squid roe (soft but mercifully not mushy), fried chicken (the breast meat was relatively bland) & a large prawn (fresh, firm & fleshy), flooded with a jumble of spicy-savoury gravies for RM29. The curries could be more robust, but this feels familiar enough to merit honourable comparisons to nasi kandar in a Penang alley.

Line Clear Nasi Kandar Restaurant KL
113 Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kuala Lumpur. Beside Kampung Baru's Plaza Rah (Public Bank). Business hours in flux, but nasi kandar should be available 11am-midnight daily

Samudra Exotic River Fish @ Rumah Rohas, Kampung Baru

From the streams of Pahang to the streets of Kuala Lumpur: behold, the wildest of Malaysia's freshwater fish have landed on Samudra's tables.

Outlet owner Hishammuddin Hamzah's family has been in the river-fish business for decades; his contacts ensure Samudra's finny fare is trucked into KL twice weekly from peninsular Malaysia's most forested state.

Begin with Patin Buah, the uncaged breed of the silver catfish, nearly four times pricier than farmed patin. RM22 for 100 grams (minimum order could be twice that).

Smooth & fleshy, this is a pleasant treat. Customers can choose a cooking style; we opted for the not-too-spicy masak pindang.

Ikan Krai in the classic masak lemak tempoyak fashion that's pungently an acquired taste. We've come to like it though; it's one of a kind, it's kinda addictive.

Ikan Krai is a crazy-bony fish that requires plenty of patience & vigilance to consume. RM34 for this seems OK (RM19 per 100 grams).

Ikan Tapah, another type of large catfish, fried here with turmeric. Great for folks who prefer their fish meaty, with much bite to it.

RM63 for this serving (RM19 per 100 grams). Fish like Empurau Sarawak, Kelah & Jelawat Sungai Pahang are on the menu too, but those will cost more (maybe much more) than RM100 per serving.

Not everything at Samudra swims; fried pigeon is also available (RM7), but this won't fly for folks who want something more than mediocre.

Check out the cow brains instead (RM6), not for the squeamish.

More cholesterol? Can't resist this one; creamy poached duck eggs (RM6).

Siput sedut (RM10), fun at first, but the effort of sucking for not much reward sucks after awhile.

Fiber to finish with: Gulai lemak pucuk ubi tempoyak (RM6), a bit spicier than expected.
