Macesz Bistro, Budapest, Hungary

Hungarian Jewish dishes take centre stage at this traditional restaurant in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter: Goose up your meal with a lovely ludaskasa - thigh of goose with liver and gizzard on vegetable risotto - and a side of stuffed goose neck on pearl barley. Don't skip dessert - the classic flodni (layered pastry with apples, jam, walnuts and poppy seeds) is worth every calorie.

Dawno Temu Na Kazimierzu Jewish Restaurant @ Krakow, Poland

Krakow's historical former Jewish quarter hides this beautiful weathered restaurant where live Yiddish music rings out in the evening to accompany traditional Jewish meals of gefilte fish (minced carp in delicate jelly), cholent (a brilliant stew of beef, beans, potatoes, vegetables & groats), & the renowned Jerusalem mixed grill (with chicken breast, liver & hearts). End your dinner with Eastern Orthodox pascha cheese cake, complemented by Israeli wines (try the Ben Ami Merlot) & Polish mead.

Federal Delicatessen @ Auckland

Absolutely one of our favourite Auckland eateries (& clearly popular among the locals too), this NYC-inspired delicatessen delves into a smorgasbord of Jewish staples, with plenty of North American crowd-pleasers in the mix. The matzo ball soup is tasty & textured; the latkes with lox, creme fraiche & dill are well worth the calories; the bagel with house-made pastrami, Swiss cheese, habanero mustard & pickles is perfectly constructed & proportioned. Have the Montreal poutine for snacking, a lovely pumpkin pie to wrap up, & cocktails infused with Dr Brown's NY Cherry Soda & Cola Nut to wash everything down.
