KL Bunga Raya, Cheras

Bunga Raya is reputedly one of Auckland's top Malaysian restaurants, enduring for more than a decade now in in New Zealand's most populous city. The brand has recently spread its wings into KL serving fare that'll be familiar to everyone in Cheras. Still, there's no harm in having another place for a pleasant plate of Hainanese chicken rice, amid a menu that spans Hokkien Mee to Nyonya asam fish rice to nasi lemak with curry chicken.

BeanGood, Cheras

Fresh-baked fruit tarts for tempting teatime takeouts at this friendly new Cheras cafe: BeanGood's treats come blanketed with toppings like orange curd (with a fragrant citrus zip) and Korean strawberries with yogurt cream (with a full-bodied berry zing), layered over a crunchy, gently nutty almond crust.

You can order up to two flavours in one six-inch pie (RM60 with non-strawberry toppings, RM70 with a strawberry topping). Wash down with strong coffee and soothing peach gum lychee jasmine tea.

Poppy Kat Cafe, Cheras

Pop into this cheerful Cheras cafe to play for a bit with the three rescue kittens - Mochi, Mimi and MeowMeow - and purchase a takeout of bagels and baked sweets.

Bagels come in dessert-friendly flavours (RM10-RM12), with a bready bite and lightly toasted chew. Our favourite is the fruity matcha pineapple bagel with cream cheese and Biscoff spread, though the honey pomelo bagel with cream cheese, peanut butter and strawberry jam bagel, and cinnamon raisin bagel with Lescure butter and maple syrup are all enjoyable carbs too.

The Earl Grey Rose Pistachio Cake is potently floral (RM10), the Chamomile Lemon Cake is perkily tangy (RM12), the Carrot Walnut Cake is fresh, moist and dense (RM8), and the Chocolate Tart is rich and indulgently creamy (RM12).

Red House 2 Cafe, Cheras

If home is where the vegetarian's heart is, Red House 2 Cafe is an address to love, where tempeh satay dwells alongside seaweed-wrapped turnip handrolls, where mushroom rendang resides in perfect harmony with fruit rojak. Take a table in the living room beside the carved giraffes or seek a seat outdoors by the porch.

Daily specials help keep the menu constantly fresh - if the dragonfruit fried embryo rice is available, order this subtly sweet platter of natural and nutritious grains, partnered with crunchy monkey head mushroom tempura, poached vegetables and a soothing corn soup.

True to expectations, everything here is ultra-wholesome, from the soft tofu pan-seared with enzyme-rich fermented sprouted wheat water to the creamy but gluten-free black bean chocolate cake. Well-executed meat-free fare.
