Bah Cafe, Seri Kembangan

Bah Cafe brings beloved flavours from its founders’ home state of Sabah to Seri Kembangan: Sandakan-inspired century egg dumplings, plump with unmistakable slices of the preserved egg, plus minced pork and morsels of prawns (RM11.90), are the tasty temptation, a true treat for dumpling devotees.

Another kitchen-made speciality is yi fu, a fish paste blended with egg, soft-textured with a briny-sweetish edge (RM12.90). And since it’s Sabah we’re talking about, seafood is a highlight too; while the Klang Valley isn’t as blessed as northern Borneo for the ocean’s bounty, Bah’s seafood bee hoon makes a commendable effort to furnish fresh produce (RM13.90).

Tenom kopi-o (RM2.60) and Sabah tea (RM2.10) complete the as-close-to-authentic-as-possible experience. Bah’s crew says the cafe’s founders come from Tenom, though a language barrier raised the risk of a miscommunication.

2017 Menu: Butter Up @ Seri Kembangan

In recent years, Butter Up has built a solid reputation as one of Seri Kembangan's top purveyors of pastries & cakes, but it's steadily becoming a neighbourhood dining destination too, promising an extensive ensemble of hot & heavy meals, founded on a comfort-food theme, promoting pork as a crucial component, served in a cheery, casual setting by an efficiently run team.

Can't go wrong with combos of egg with meat: Butter Up's Eggs Benedict boast two runny yolks perched over thick English muffins, splashed with creamy sabayon sauce, layered with pork bacon & finished with fries (RM14.95; more affordable than the Klang Valley's norm). If you prefer an Asian inflection, check out Butter Up's interpretation of omurice, featuring fried rice blanketed by a moist, lightly salted omelette, with juicy grilled pork shoulder & brown sauce to round out the plate (RM16.96).

There's even something of a Tex-Mex corner on the menu - nachos with spicy slow-braised pork chili con carne prove predictably crowd-pleasing (RM8.90), while tacos take on an Eastern twist, partnering its load of roast pork with a Thai-inspired tangy sauce, pineapples & Japanese cucumbers, plus a substantial salad on the side (RM13.78).

For lovers of herb-rubbed meat, Butter Up's main courses offer genuinely reasonable value - the grilled pork ribs with chimichurri are capably executed, with the focus on fork-tender flesh; at RM26.50, you can add two sides, such as egg-topped rice & pasta aglio olio, for a tremendously filling meal. The pan-seared chicken leg might placate fans of fowl, laced with notes of lemongrass & honey (RM15.90; also with two generously portioned sides - we chose crunchy garlic toast & crisp coleslaw).

Seafood gets more than a fair shake in the pizza, pasta & rice sections - the smoked salmon with egg & cheddar on a tomato-base pizza is stretched out with no lack of fish (RM22.26), while the pasta vongole emerges with all the clams, garlic, shallots & chilli flakes necessary for a successful rendition of this classic (RM16.96). But our guilty-pleasure award goes to the mozzarella-baked seafood rice, presented piping-hot, supplying irresistible spoonfuls of crusty-cheesy savouriness (RM19.08).

Butter Up's counters strive to tempt customers with bread & sweet treats galore - we sampled the Japanese-influenced black sesame & matcha red bean cake slices (RM6.50), both of which were satisfactory, not overly sugary, concentrating instead on clear, clean flavours. Many thanks to the Butter Up team for having us here.

Butter Up @ Seri Kembangan, Brew & Bread @ One City USJ Subang & Coffee Factory @ Setiawalk Puchong

Checking out a trio of suburban spots that work well enough for light brunches, teatime treats & cups of coffee, beginning with Butter Up, a pretty nice-looking cafe in Seri Kembangan.

A constellation of cakes, bread & pastries lights up the counters; interesting varieties include crispy buns laced with longan fruit & raisins, plus others tinged with cream cheese & walnuts or cranberries, coconut & almond flakes.

Hot food is available too; everything from pasta with chopped lamb, carrots & thyme to pizzas with shrimp & squid. Butter Up's version of Eggs Atlantic is not too bad: Poached eggs with smoked salmon on English muffins with sabayon sauce, paired with a hearty portion of potato wedges for only RM11.

Butter Up's coffee is not quite memorable except for what comes with it: a very cute spoon-shaped butter cookie.

Next up, Brew & Bread, which has opened a second branch at One City in USJ Subang following the success of its original Kota Kemuning outlet.

This one's more urbane; it would fit in perfectly in the sleekest of malls. No wonder this cafe is packed at lunch hour.

Still, Brew & Bread's popularity can't be attributed merely to its appearance; it takes its coffee seriously too.

Final stop: Coffee Factory at Setia Walk in Puchong.

Baked eggs, nice & runny, though the slices of sausage meat inside are inferior. Good accompaniment of potatoes though.

Salted caramel lattes & Ethiopia Sidamo coffee might tempt caffeine addicts; could be fine-tuned for better-balanced flavours, but OK for what they are.
