Stiq, Wangsa Maju

If crazy-tender meat is what you crave, Stiq could stake a claim for that: Its grass-fed striploin can be sliced effortlessly with a plastic knife, served as a thick, smooth cut in a buttery preparation (RM45). The signature Lamb Stiq is slow-cooked for 22 hours (RM27; smothered in barbecue sauce), while the Peri-Peri Chicken is the result of 12 hours of brining and 12 hours of sous-vide (RM16 for half a chicken). Portions are honorably generous, with potatoes and vegetables to balance out the protein; for patrons with a tolerance for heavy sauces, Stiq sticks the landing.

Twelve Slices Cafe, Wangsa Maju

One slice might not suffice at Twelve Slices, which showcases house-baked indulgences that may seem irresistible to cake cravers.

Start perhaps with the Pandan Gula Melaka (RM14), then move on to the heavier-flavoured Nutella Mille Crepe (RM15.50) and Devil’s Chocolate Cake (RM16), indulgently dense without being too sugary or cloying.

With a view of the twin towers in the distance, and a soundtrack dominated by young divas from Demi Lovato to Zara Larsson, this relatively secluded, compact cafe - with barely half a dozen tables inside - might fare well for a teatime catch-up session.

Note that not every variety of cake is available each day, but the rotating selection might include Victoria Lemon Cakes, Rose Pistachio Cakes, pavlovas, puffs and puddings.

Twelve Slices Cafe
G-10, Seasons Garden Residence, Jalan 26/26, Seksyen 10, Wangsa Maju, 53300 Kuala Lumpur.
Open Tuesday-Friday, 1pm-930pm; Saturday-Sunday, 12pm-10pm. Closed Mondays and public holidays.

Al-Nafoura Yemeni Cuisine @ Wangsa Maju

'Nafoura' means fountain in Arabic, & this casual restaurant is certainly an oasis for cooking that takes inspiration from the Arabian Peninsula, specifically Yemen. It's a labour of love that intimately showcases the passions of Eritrean-Malaysian couple Ibrahim & Izana; Ibrahim was raised in Saudi Arabia, & the menu here represents the nourishment that sustained him for much of his formative years. Izana too has long cultivated a fascination for Middle Eastern food & culture - on the walls of Al-Nafoura, you'll find her beautifully captured photographs of landscapes & life throughout Oman & the United Arab Emirates.

Feasts here may start with Al-Nafoura's tapas-style small plates, which illustrate how Yemeni cuisine has expertly embraced foreign influences & ingredients from Ottoman, Mughlai Indian & African counterparts. Yemen's national dish of saltah is a should-try, featuring gravied lamb partnered with potatoes, tomatoes, egg, chilli & salsa for pure, pleasurable comfort food (RM20), a testament to how Ibrahim & his team personally scour the markets for top-flight produce. Other tasty temptations include kebda, beef liver stir-fried with spices & onions (RM16), & oqda, made of stewed chicken & carrots (RM17), served with complimentary malawah, the well-known giant-sized layered bread that's addictively flavoursome & admirably textured.

Al-Nafoura's pride is madghout, harnessing the skills of the kitchen's all-Yemeni cooks - expect fleshy chunks of achingly succulent lamb, freshly & fragrantly prepared to order in a pressure cooker with basmati rice moistly simmered in a mellow, sweet-savoury tomato-based sauce; lamb lovers will like this a lot (RM39 for a portion with a half-kilogram of lamb). To boost your lamb satisfaction, pair with the lamb soup, brimming with thick lamb cuts in a clear, compellingly aromatic broth (RM18).

The restaurant's repertoire extends from the familiar - chicken mandi, comprising a full leg grilled in slow heat & served with traditional rice (RM16) is a safe crowd-pleaser - to a unique Malaysian-Mideast fusion creation of Maggi Goreng Kabsa (RM18, punchy with lamb). For balance, order an enlivening house salad of crunchy Japanese cucumbers with olives & feta (RM10).

Save space for sweets: Al-Nafoura serves excellent kanafeh (RM15; the Mideast cheesecake - irresistibly crisp pastry stuffed with melt-in-the-mouth mild white cheese, crowned with cream) & creme caramel (RM10; smooth chilled custard, artfully adorned with cookie crumbs), A pitcher of cooling lemon-mint juice is the ideal companion for the meal, & hot, stove-brewed adani milk tea, with undercurrents of cloves & cardamom, makes for a fitting finale. Many thanks to Al-Nafoura for having us.

Calories @ Desa Sri Hartamas, Cafe Lapis @ Wangsa Maju & Cafe Bureau @ Kota Damansara

Checking out a set of suburban cafes with a clean, uncluttered look, soothing white shades & very friendly vibes, starting with Desa Sri Hartamas' Calories, which is spearheaded by the two sisters who run Bangsar's popular Mimpikita fashion boutique.

Calories offers a fair mix of recipes to woo breakfast, lunch & tea crowds, from Eggs Benedict with beef bacon in the morning to Mama's Daging Dendeng with rice in the afternoon & baked treats from Jaslyn Cakes for the evening, washed down with hot lattes, cold lemon & lychee soda or zero-calorie water. Prices feel reasonable, with most servings clocking in at under RM20.

Next up, Cafe Lapis, a cosy neighbourhood hideout in Wangsa Maju with a relatively creative collection of cross-border fare.

Some unorthodox temptations here, from the slow-roasted pulled lamb sandwich topped with tangy tabbouleh (RM15) to buffalo wings in sambal sauce (RM7), competently executed. Snacks include waffle fries with onion dip (RM8) & batter-fried florets of broccoli & cauliflower (RM5). Desserts include apple pie cupcakes & strawberry shortcake jars, while beverages span apple caramel floats (RM7.50) & chocolate malted milkshakes (RM8).

Final stop: Cafe Bureau, hidden in Kota Damansara's Cascades complex, ideal for customers who like lots of natural light.

Expect a crowd-pleasing selection here - beef sandwiches built with burger patties (RM19.90) & spicy lala pasta (RM15.90), with doughnuts, cakes & coffee all available too. Love the signs on the wall & the thoughtful little touches all around this place.
