This is a short radio broadcast, interspersed with interviews with our ever-present pal, Pat St. John. There are only three songs performed live, with a sparse acoustic arrangement. His MTV Unplugged show took place the following year...but that was recorded with a nine-piece band and sounds closer to the officially released versions.  These versions are basic: one guitar is panned right, the other panned left, with light percussion and John's voice in the center.  The show was padded out with a few tracks from his current album.

I got this cassette in trade.  It's a first generation and sounds great...
...virtually no tape hiss.

Kenny Aronoff (drums)
Mike Wanchic (guitar)

CORRECTED FILE TAGS NOVEMBER 2024.  The correct date of the show is Dec. 16, 1991 (the album title tag had the wrong date).

Brainticket - Cottonwoodhill {1971}

Back From The Dead...

OK, back to the WAYBACK machine. Don't forget to strap in your BRAINS!!

Brain Ticket - Cottonwood Hill
Studio Recordings @ 320
{Out of Print}

Brainticket is the brainchild of Joel Vandroogenbroeck, a Belgian based in Switzerland who grew up studying classical piano before switching to jazz. He received the Art Tatum prize as “youngest jazz pianist” at the tender age of fifteen, and was soon touring around Europe and Africa. By 1967, Joel was still playing jazz but he found new inspiration in the sounds emanating from German krautrock artists Amon Duul II, Can and Tangerine Dream.

Under the influence of these groups, Joel and guitarist Ron Byer recruited drummer Wolfgang Paap and formed the trio that would become Brainticket. The group’s 1971 debut album Cottonwoodhill immediately ran into a storm of controversy for its association with psychedelic drugs. The album came with a warning label that insisted you should “only listen once a day to this record. Your brain might be destroyed,” which led to the album being banned in several countries including the USA.

...brain fuck on full blast

.38 Special / Dallas, TX 1982 - Captured Live CL-583

CAPTURED LIVE!
.38 Special CL 583
For broadcast: Week of May 23, 1983

Recorded at the Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas

The likely recording date is November 26, 1982,
Hosted by Perry Stone.

Captured Live! LPs had a Disc Code numbering system combining the first letters of the show name (“CL”) with the number of the show (1, 2, 3…)  and the year (either 1983 or 1984). As an example, the first show of 1983 was CL 183, the second show was CL 283, etc.).

Something went wrong with the numbering for this show, as there is a Jethro Tull show with the same number.  I've included a copy of the CL 583 Jethro Tull disc label to document that I'm not finally getting that acid flashback they warned me about back in the 70s.

00 1000hz Tone
01 Captured Live! CL-583 Intro - Perry Stone
02 Take 'em Out
03 Back On The Track
04 Rough Housin'
05 Captured Live! CL-583 Break - Perry Stone
06 Stone Cold Believer
07 You Keep Runnin' Away
08 Wild Eyed Southern Boys
09 Captured Live! CL-583 Break - Perry Stone
10 Chain Lightnin'
11 Back Door Stranger
12 So Caught Up In You
13 Captured Live! CL-583 Break - Perry Stone
14 Turn It On
15 Around And Around
16 Hold On Loosely
17 I've Been A Mover
18 Captured Live! CL-583 Break - Perry Stone
19 Rockin' In The Night
20 Fortunate Son
21 Captured Live! CL-583 Break - Perry Stone
22 Captured Live! CL-583 Outor - Perry Stone

This is a 3 LP set, but there are only five sides, the sixth side is blank.  The last bit of the etching in the run out groove is anybody's guess, part is a cursive script and the letters are not clear.

CL•583•CM CR  script: 8e OR Se
CL•583•CM CR  script: 8e OR Se
CL•583•CM CR  script: 8e OR Se
CL•583•CM CR  script: 8e OR Se
CL•583•CM CR  script: 8e OR Se

The vinyl on this was not mint, so this one took a lot of work to clean up.

Flac files of .wavs.  300 dpi scans of all six disc labels (yes, even the blank side), the cue sheet (wrinkled, but readable).

This version digitized August 2022 by you-know-who, direct from the syndicated radio station discs.

Captured Live! broadcast a second .38 Special concert in 1984 as CL-1484. Ten of the songs on this 1983 broadcast are repeated, but the set list is reordered (for example, the show opens with Wild-Eyed Southern Boys as the first track).  I don't have that show for comparison, but you know how it goes here..."We get on our phones, scour the Internet....and Scooby-Doo this shit."

So here goes:

There's a bootleg released in 2020 named "Hot Night at the Juke Joint: The Dallas Broadcast 1984."  The set list matches the 10 song Captured Live CL 1484 1984 show.  If the bootleg is from Dallas, then most likely so is the 1984 Captured Live! show.  As the 1983 broadcast is identified by Perry Stone as being from Dallas, it's likely they're  sourced from the same concert.

Quod erat demonstrandum:

If you bought the bootleg, this version has five more songs from the same show (Back On The Track, Chain' Lightnin', I've Been A Mover, Take 'em Out, and Turn It On).

From Wiki:
"Reunion Arena was an indoor arena located in the Reunion district of downtown Dallas, Texas. The arena served as the primary home of the National Hockey League's Dallas Stars and the National Basketball Association's Dallas Mavericks. The venue's capacity held accommodations for 17,000 for ice hockey spectators, and 18,190 for basketball spectators.

Reunion Arena was demolished in November 2009 and the site was cleared by the end of the year."

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted February 25, 2009

Falling out of the sky in the mid-90's, Whiskeytown grabbed the mantle of Critical Darlings by the throat and did not let go.

Fronted by Ryan Adams and Caitlin Cary, they burned hard and they burned fast and they burned out before the world really knew what hit them.

With Ryan's remarkable songwriting, and an energy that can only come from a bunch of musicians who aren't aware of the ground they are breaking, Whiskeytown helped define what it meant to mix a punkish abandon with the pathos of great country music.
~Bloodshot Records

*Enclosed Notes*
The original recording has a bad 60 Hz hum from Nightime Gals on; if I remember the story correctly, the volume was accidentally cut on the recorder, and the boost on playback brought out the hum. I used a simple notch filer in Cool Edit Pro to make the tracks more listenable. I have prefaced the track number with "d" and appended "dehummed" after the song title so you can easily discard the versions you don't want to keep. I also corrected several song titles from the original torrent, although on the unreleased songs, who knows what the accurate titles are.

Ryan Adams and the rest of Whiskeytown play a killer show!

Nash the Slash - Children of the Night (1980)

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted January 6, 2010

Nash the Slash - Children of the Night (1980)
Studio Recordings @192
Out of Print

Imagine a blend of Gary Numan, early Pink Floyd, Jean-Michel Jarre and The Stranglers and you have a sense of the music. Add the mystery of a zealously guarded identity (he's believed to be Canadian) and someone who appears onstage with his face swathed completely in surgical bandages, and you have a clearer picture of one of music's true eccentrics. Who else released an instrumental LP that bills itself as playable at any speed? Nash first surfaced in 1976 as an electric violinist and mandolin player with vocalist, bassist and synthesizer player Cameron Hawkins as FM. Rejecting the conformity of AM radio, they experimented electronically in the manner of Brian Eno. Similar to Andy Warhol and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable live presentation that helped launch Velvet Underground, FM's hometown concert debut in Toronto blew away the crowd with an assault of visual images coupled with sound. It set the pattern for Nash's solo career, which began in 1978 in an audio-visual collaboration with painter Robert Vanderhorst, who would reappear later in Nash's career. Following his quirky vision, Nash wrote the music and played all the instruments, even handling the engineering and production at times during his first several albums. An exception was Daniel Lanois producing one tune from 1982 Nash album And You Thought You Were Normal. Nash has regrouped with different incarnations of FM during the years. While his unconventional ideas limit collaboration possibilities, he has recorded and toured with Numan. Nash scores soundtracks periodically, notably releasing a CD of his score for the 1991 Canadian cult favorite Highway 61, which featured singer Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys in a small role. Nash's first two albums were re-packaged on CD in 1997, and he continued to work on new material. ~Mark Alan, AMG

If you've never heard Nash before then your in for a treat. Searing electric violin passages, power chord mandolins, an arsenal of effects and devices and vocals. Nash plays everything himself, and he is a 'jack of all trades'. Open up your ears and give this a spin.
