The Velvet Underground - Live Cleveland, OH. 1968

The Velvet Underground - Live La Cave
Cleveland, OH.
February 10, 1968
aka - Problems In Urban Living
Audience recording @320

La Cave 1968: Problems In Urban Living documents the raw sound of riots in music form; the particulars of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground’s revolutionary music (words, specific notes) get mixed up in the general fervor for change, for bringing in the new and de-throning the old in a grand, distorted guitar spectacle.
Lou Reed and the gang fittingly kick things off with “Move Right In,” a short and nasty number with rollicking, swervy, drunken rhythms and a volcanic pile-up of noise and energy and ash at the end.
The next tune, “I Can’t Stand It,” is unfortunately muddled by the same sound mixing problems that muddle most of the album; the words get lost behind the boiling distorted, but care-free inferno of guitars, drums and bass. Rather than crystal-clear music from a lost time, we get a feeling, an experience, something unquantifiable. This, like the rest of the album, comes across as the bottled-up sounds, smells and sensations of live music, muddled by bad sound systems, a few drinks and the general haze of a night out in the city. It’s that cheap wine you’ve saved until after you’ve polished off the centerpiece bottle. As a listener you’re no longer after a definitive taste, but seeking communion with that ineffable feeling we call rock and roll, or change.
Like any lively bar, the band plays second fiddle here to drink and conversation at times. In “Pale Blue Eyes,” Lou Reed stops midway to ask the sound men to turn the microphones on, which begs me to ask the question that’s been on my mind throughout the album: is this merely a rock and roll artifact, something for study and amusement, or something that can, despite its lackluster mixing and distorted sound, provide as much repeated listening pleasure as say, Velvet Underground the studio album does?
La Cave is something that any Velvet, or for that matter, any fan of rock, should listen to and
decide for themselves whether this is just archaeological noise, or cold, hard, habit-forming
rock intoxication.

Marshall Crenshaw / BBC College Concert #17 - My Father's Place, Rosyln, NY 1982

Marshall Crenshaw was riding high on a hit single, "Someday, Someway," that had gone Top 40 at the time he recorded this live show.
Recorded at My Father's Place in Rosyln, New York, the original broadcast was by WLIR-FM.

This show has recently been released as a copyright gap "grey market" European CD. This version is not copied from that release but is digitized directly from the original syndicated radio show LP.

You can buy a My Father's Place t-shirt at:

Elvis Presley - The Alternate In Person/Back In Memphis @320Kbps {NOW WITH NEW LINKS}

NOW BACK FROM THE DEAD
I have recently unearthed some very hard to find Elvis Cd's. The first one is called "Elvis Movie Quotes" It features his wisdom and comments on things that were very relevant to the times. Here are just some of the fantastic quotes you'll get when you purchase this album, "My next movie is gonna feature me in a UFO. I'm gonna be kidnapped by martians, they want me to do a live concert, so they can raise margolas (I believe that's martian talk for money) so they can fuel there spaceships for a hostile takeover of Hewlett/Packard." In the end I fight 1400 of them little pricks and take em' all out with my karate. It's gonna be called "Handsome Ransom" it's gonna have my new hit called "There Ain't No Goddamn Bathrooms Here." Also kinda mysterious here is track 6 called....well here I'll just play it for you..... Elvis: "You know Red, I keep getting phone calls from some guy named Donald Rump or Crump, this idiot wants me to contribute money to some investment he wants to start called Dump Towers or Jump From Towers, this sonofabitch might as well ask me for money to run for president or something...what a fool."  Hmmmm... what do you think.? Some pretty interesting stuff on here don't you think?  See Scans

THERE GONNA TAKE ME AWAY FOR ANOTHER NINE YEARS

YES THE FAIR'S MOVING ON BUT I WON'T LEAVE YOU LONG

Culture Club live bootleg

Culture Club
bootleg
flac files of wavs.

01  Church of the Poison Mind
02  Victims
03  Black Money
04  Love Twist
05  Miss Me Blind
06  Mr. Man
07  I'll Tumble 4 Ya!
08  It's A Miracle
09  Karma Chameleon

This bootleg uses a similar font and text layout as the Warner Brothers Music Show promo albums, takes the King Biscuit Flower Hour's name, and replicates the BBC Rock Hour's
disc label for show #448.  And Uncle Scrooge McDuck and his nephew Donald are on the cover, too.

Each side is 20 minutes long, compared to the 30 minutes per side of an official BBC Rock Hour. During quiet passages between songs, another band can be faintly heard, as if they taped over something and it didn't completely erase.

In spite of that, show is clear and enjoyable and it's only noticeable in a few spots .  The bootleg doesn't provide any information on source or venue.

The actual BBC Rock Hour #448 was a Culture Club show from the Apollo Theatre in Manchester with a longer set list, in a different running order. It's likely the bootleggers edited down the original show to 20 minutes a side, and that the music on here is all from the Manchester show.

Rock City was a San Francisco night club located at Broadway and Montgomery Street, close to the location of other well-known venues such as the Mabuhay Gardens and The Stone.  While it was short-lived, they managed to put out a compilation of artists that played the club.  I included scans of the front and back cover and the disc labels, and I found some information in an online scan of the October issue of Damage magazine about some of the bands.  Flac files of wavs.  This was digitized from a sealed copy of the album.

While all of these fell under "punk" at the time, the styles are actually all over the place.  Ultrasheen does a funk cover of James Brown's "Super Bad," and the Two Tones are a reggae band.

While the disc label says "Live From Gilley's," the show was recorded
at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and the cue sheet lists it as a "Westwood One Presents" show.

The same set was repeated in 1988 as L 88-16, which also used the Gilley's disc label with the Westwood One Presents cue sheet.  Sometime between LG 87-11 and L 88-16, they dropped the "G" from the disc label code.

Southern Pacific was a country rock band working from 1983 to 1991, based in California, with drummer Keith Knudsen and guitarist John McFee as the core members who played on all of their four albums.  Knudsen had been in the Doobie Brothers (1974-1982), while McFee played with Van Morrison, Steve Miller, and Elvis Costello, and was a member of Clover with Huey Lewis. They were named after the railroad company (which later evolved into Sprint, the telecommunications company).

Their original bass player was session giant Jerry Scheff, who was replaced by Stu Cook from Creedence Clearwater Revival as of their second album. David Jenkins (from Pablo Cruise) joined in 1987 for their third album.  I'm not sure if Jenkins is on this live recording, as it doesn't have any material from that third LP..

As might be expected of a country band formed by rock musicians in California, the music is country-rock or country-pop and not traditionalist hard country.  Southern Pacific tackle covers of Peter & Gordon's British Invasion hit, "I Go To Pieces," Tom Petty's "A Thing About You," and rock out on Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac." "Tulsa Time," a hit on the rock charts by Eric Clapton and on the country charts by Don Willams also makes an appearance.

And as also might be expected, they had trouble finding an audience:  it was the old "too rock for the country audience, and too country for the rock audience" problem.

Of note on this recording is their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi," which never appeared on a Southern Pacific album. With Stu Cook in the line-up,a countrified Creedence cover was a good idea.

Vintage commercials include an appearance by New York Mets manager Dave Johnson.
