Steve One & The Shades / Once In A Lifetime LP, 1988
For fans of 1980's bands like Scott Wilk & the Walls, Eddie & The Tide, Huey Lewis & the News.....add Steve One & the Shades to the list.
A few years back, I digitized a cassette tape I recorded back in the 80's of a STEVE ONE & THE SHADES live broadcast on Bay Area radio station KRQR (see below). I hadn't listened to it in years and was struck by how good the songwriting was...they could have been contenders if they'd been signed to a major label.
I tracked down a sealed copy of their 1988 self-released album "Once In A Lifetime" which I've digitized here. I've included scans of the album cover, disc labels, lyric sheets, merchandise mail order form, and review questionnaire.
Here's what I've tracked down about the band:
As a teenager in northern California in the 1970s, singer Steve Waddington formed the revivalist band, Cruisin', with lead guitarist Ray Pepperell. As you can probably guess from the band's name, Cruisin' fell into a rockabilly/doo-wop 1950s revival style. The band performed extensively in the Northern California market, and put out a Waddington/Pepperell penned do-wop novelty song "Vicky's Hickey" on 45 which garnered some local radio air play.
The band broke up around 1978....with Ray Pepperell forming the Dead Kennedys and adopting the stage name of East Bay Ray. He stayed in touch with Steve Waddington, and produced some demo songs for him, and eventually and had him sing lead on East Bay Ray's 1984 solo release of "Trouble In Town"/"Poison Heart".
Waddington formed Steve One & the Shades in 1982-1983, adopting the stage name of "Steve One" at a time when there were two Steves in the band, and a Steve working the soundboard...hence the need to differentiate between several Steves.
Steve One & the Shades worked the Northern California club circuit, did some live radio broadcasts, put out an EP produced by Scott Matthews from the Durocs.....and put out a self-produced LP, which is presented here. The recordings were originally intended as demos to garner record company interest, but was eventually issued to the public and sold out two pressings. As with a lot of good bands, they didn't get a major label contract....and broke up at the end of the 1980s.
The work on Once In A Lifetime is solid, well done, and Waddington's got an easy-on-the-ears pop-rock style to his singing. The galloping "Spaghetti Western" beat of East Bay Ray's "Trouble In Town" makes a reappearance, rewritten with a a different melody and new lyrics as "Sorry Someday," which is my favorite on the record. All in all...this is one that fell through the cracks at the time and it deserves a wider audience. If you like pop-rock, give it a chance.

Steve One & The Shades / New George's, San Rafael, CA Nov. 18, 1987 KRQR-FM
I hadn’t played this cassette in twenty years until I digitized it in 2011 and that put me on a quest to eventually track down their lone LP (see above). As I've finally got around to that project, I'm giving this one a "bump" so the two posts will be next to each other.
In retrospect I am stunned this band didn’t get a major label record contract. Steve One & the Shades had the chops and the songwriting, and it's clear from this tape they had a great live act. They even work in a sly musical reference to Hugo Montenegro’s version of “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" into "Sorry Someday." It may be a case of “there's not enough room on the radio dial” – we already HAD a Huey Lewis here in the Bay Area, so where would we put a second one?
The sound quality is excellent. It’s recorded directly from my master copy of a high-bias cassette. Flac files of wavs.

This is one that we put up back in 2012, but the Rapidshare link has long gone dead, so here's a new link. My comments at the time were:
This is digitized directly from a clean copy of the BBC Rock Hour LP. I declicked it manually, removing any surface noise a click at a time. I've included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet. I've left in the commercials but they are tracked so that you can discard them if you're not interested in the archival nature of this transfer.

Almost two years later, ten songs from the Keele show were assembled for distribution in the U.S.A. on London Wavelength’s "BBC College Concert" show #12, which had a broadcast date of November 28, 1982. "King" and "Little By Little" were dropped, and "My Way Of Thinking," "Burden Of Shame," "Madam Medusa," and "Wildcat" were added.
In the 1990s, the Keele concert turned up on the bootleg albums "H20" by Beech Marten/Phonocomp (BM 086 (CD, 1992)), and then again as "Paris" by On Stage Records (CD-ON 2307 (CD, 1994)). Both of these were Italian bootleg labels, and both attributed the show to "Paris Theatre, London UK in 1982." Both bootlegs had the same 10 songs in the same order as the BBC College Concert show. As both bootlegs have the same incorrect information about the venue and date, it’s likely that the 1994 release just bootlegged the earlier bootleg.
Adding to the confusion on this show is that Keele University sometimes turns up spelled as "Keyl University" (which doesn’t exist) or "Kiel University" (which does exist, but is in Germany).
(note: London Wavelength also released a UB40 concert on the "The Penthouse/Omni College Concert" show number #1019. That show is not the Keele concert, it’s from the Hammersmith Odeon in 1984.)
As to the date of the show, it’s from LATE in 1980, as comments from the stage make it clear it’s recorded after the release of their first album Signing Off (released Aug. 29, 1980). Based on other shows played at the time, it’s likely to be from November of 1980 as they were doing shows in the north of the U.K. at that time.
This is a digitization of the BBC College Concert #12 syndicated LP that was distributed in America for broadcast on November 28, 1982.
Scans of the cue sheet and a disc label are included. Flac files of wavs.

Don Leady, the leader of Tailgators, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, accordionist, and producer with a vision. He put together an audio gumbo of Gulf Coast styles blended with rock seasonings. A native of Cool Valley, Missouri, Don Leady is an experimentalist with the guitar, constantly finding new techniques and sounds. It certainly doesn't stop with the guitar; he's gone into fiddle, steel guitar, and most recently the accordion. His education came from masters of the art, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and later B.B. King, because their music was readily available. He heard the Ventures and Duane Eddy a bit further down the line and loved their style. He also caught Joe Maphis and the Collins Kids on the TV show Ranch Party, and Maphis made a huge impression on him. Joe Maphis became one of Don Leady's idols. Hearing Joe Maphis play the boogie woogie guitar and thinking to himself that the guy was picking the guitar ten times faster than Duane Eddy, Don Leady was star-struck. Tailgators began in 1984 and continued into the 21st century, with a charismatic style of music that is very contagious. Don Leady, Jean-Jacques (JJ) Barrera, and Chico Oropeza, are the Tail Gators who are cookin' up the tunes on their 1996 release, It's a Hog Groove! Billy Gibbons, of ZZ Top, calls the trio from Austin, Texas his favorite American band. The trio is one that should not be missed at a live venue -- if there are any tickets left, they generally sell out fast. Some of the other names Tailgators have been rumored to use in and around the Austin scene are Zydeco Loco and Gators del Norte.

Taper Notes
Second show of my three show trip, second time I have seen them in this location and it was a brilliant show again. The band was on fire again, Steven Wilson has really grown into a charismatic frontman over the years. Gavin is an out of this world drummer, tight, technical yet still groovy to the wazoo. And I really appreciate that John Wesley is always trying to play something new in his solo parts. A great moment happened during Trains when Richard does some piano thing and the whole band throws smiles around with Steven grinning while singing. This scene repeats itself during Halo when Colin "slaps" on the bass and you can clearly hear Steven is smiling while he is singing the next words. Fun stuff, things you look for in a live performance :) Another fun thing was Steven's game before Trains when he asks "What do you want to hear?" and everybody is shouting out titles. One guy chose a particularly old track and Steven was going "What? Linton Samuel Dawson?...I think we'll do Trains, thank you."
The sound in the venue was very good, its actually a very wide but not very long venue so you get to stand really close to the stage. The advantage of this is that everything sounds very clear and not distant. The crowd was very respectful up until the encores when people starting to sign and shout along (which of course is fine). I think this beats the London recording and most certainly the Vienna recording I did the day after. Enjoy!
My note:
I'm NOT the guy who turned this from a flac file to a mp3! If anyone has the flac version of this please let us know!

Stephen Stills / Las Vegas July 21, 1995 WW1 Superstars In Concert #96-12
In ten years of searching for Westwood One Superstars and In Concert shows on Ebay I've only run across this show once. Some shows seem common as dirt, others never seem to turn up but once a decade.
Anyway...this is up at Guitars 101 in an "FM broadcast" version that presumably has a bit of radio station compression...but this version is edited from the syndicated radio station discs. So this may be a MARGINAL improvement over that one (which I haven't heard).
As the announcer, Tawn Mastrey, sometimes ends her comments right on top of the first note or chord of a song, I've chosen to edit the commercials out, but leave in all of the Westwood One announcements. Plus, Tawn was a MEGA-BABE, a great radio talent, and helped break numerous acts that I dearly love...as Wikipedia puts it, adding "AC/DC, Cheap Trick, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Devo, The Police, Joan Jett, and countless other now legendary bands to the playlist while working as Music Director at KSJO...."
So she stays. She deserves to be remembered as having been a great contribution to American rock n' roll radio.
This is a solid show. More "blues" than his work with CSN or CSN&Y, with covers of the Allman Brother's "Midnight Rider," Dylan's "The Ballad of Hollis Brown," and Nick Gravenites (and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's) "Born In Chicago."
Flac files of wavs. 300 dpi scans of the cue sheet and CDs. And a ticket!
