Squeeze / Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA Sept. 29, 1999, KFOG-FM

...and here's another Squeeze show from KFOG-FM.  While this one is a full band, Chris Difford is missing, he's "back in England" according to Glenn Tilbrook's intro on "Take Me, I'm Yours."

This another "in studio" show, recorded in front of small studio audience.  This is from my master cassette of the broadcast so the sound is excellent.  Flac files of wavs.

There's also a bootleg out there on the Internet of this show.  I can't tell if it's a real "silver cd" or someone's homemade CD-R...but this version is NOT sourced from the bootleg.

Los Lobos / Wells Fargo Theatre, Los Angeles, CA May 16, 1996 FM broadcast

While this is from KFOG-FM, the introduction says it's a "Warner Brothers Music Showcase" broadcast, which suggests that this was a national broadcast that was likely multi-cast on more stations than just KFOG.

The sound quality is about as good as it gets, as I used a metal high-bias cassette (not that you care about the technical details...).

As is often the case with Los Lobos shows, they include a cover of Don Santiago Jimenez Sr.'s "Ay Te Dejo En San Antonio" from back in the 1940s.  Great song!   You can hear the original on YouTube.....I can only follow about half the Spanish, but here are what the lyrics are (according to the Great and Powerful Internet).

Don Santiago is the father of Flaco Jimenez.

"Ya no quiereo que me beses ni besarte
Ni mirarte ni siquera oir tu voz
Por que supe que tenias otro amante
Y en Laredo ya tenias otros dos

Te gusta mucho el baile

Y bailas al compas
Te vas hasta Laredo
Y quieres mas y mas

Soy ranchero jugador y navegante

The Knack / Shoreline Amphitheatre,Mountain View, CA June 10, 1994 KITS-FM

More housecleaning...I'm moving this one over from FBSVIP...

This tape is from an all-day broadcast of a modern rock festival at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.   As many bands were billed, the set lists were short, but that just makes the bands a bit more focused.

According to Wikipedia, the Knack reunited that year to capitalize on the "My Sharona" appearance on the soundtrack of the movie "Reality Bites."

KSAN's Rising Stars show, Romeo Void / Fun Addicts / SVT - probably 1980 or 1981

Just before KSAN went "country" they had a series of live broadcasts from local clubs featuring local bands.  This one is right off my master cassette, but unfortunately I didn't write down the date of the show.

This tape features up-and-coming post-punk band Romeo Void, the unsigned Fun Addicts (you can read more about them at:  http://rickclare.homedns.org:8080/times5/funaddicts.html ) and finally, Jack Cassidy's (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) power pop band SVT.

The Romeo Void set is interesting because this is well before their commercial breakout; they do a cover of the Swingin' Medallions "Double Shot Of My Baby's Love."  The Fun Addicts set is solid pop-rock, trading off between  male and female vocalists.   It's unfortunate they didn't get signed and get to release an album.  While they're virtually unknown outside of the Bay Area, they were a good band and I recommend them to fans of the pop-rock style.  The SVT set rocks like hell, and while they're a footnote in Jack Cassidy's illustrious career, they had great songs and again, I recommend them to you.  I saw them live at the Mabuhay Gardens and they rocked like crazy.

The picture for this post is a badge I got at that SVT show at the Mabuhay from my old punk rock jacket.

Rocky Burnette - two albums

Rocky Burnette scored a big hit with "Tired of Toein' The Line" in 1980, which has never been released on CD.  Here's a needle-drop digitization from a mint condition copy of the album.

The songwriting varies from good to god-awful; he's better on the mid to up-tempo numbers than on the Presleyesque ballads.  And "Clowns From Outer Space" has one of the oddest metaphors I've heard in quite a while: "Like a clown in outer space, you drug'd my heart across the galaxy."

Yikes.

But still:  Tired Of Toein' The Line is a great song.

https://mega.co.nz/#!bAhFyQ6R!IRHevYnCKHNoh8YmZezJCxcw-Gb9Iq5j1tXQ28zwC7U

....And here's his second album, from 1982.

No big hit, but the uptempo songs are decent.

Neither of these have ever been released on CD. They're "of a time," the production definitely sounds 1980s..

Rembrandts / Club Oasis, San Jose, CA July 7, 1995 KFOG-FM

We don't have any live Rembrandts here.

Now we have some!

Right from one of my master tapes, so the sound is decent.

These days they're known for the ubiquitous theme song to hit sit-com "Friends" which does them a bit of a disservice as it tags them as one hit wonders....two of the members used to be in GREAT BUILDINGS, a wonderful power pop band of the early 1980s.  If you've never heard of Great Buildings, go check out "Hold On To Something" on YouTube.

Squeeze / The Plant, CA November 19, 1993 KFOG-FM

While this one is billed as Squeeze, it's really Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook playing without a band.  Two guys,  two acoustic guitars....it's like one o' those early 1990s "Unplugged" shows.

EXCEPT there are interviews between each song which are fun the first time through but slow things down on repeated listening.  So...I tracked the interviews as separate tracks so you can skip over 'em or burn just the songs to a CD-R.

Sound quality is EXCELLENT.

Over there on the right is an article that I found in Billboard's February 5, 1994 issue that had an actual picture from this show.

First of all, don't get all hot n' bothered by the cassettes below...read the text before you download it. This is a good show, but the low bias tape source means it's a less than perfect.

Other versions of this show:

There is a shorter version circulating on the Internet sourced from a rebroadcast of the show on 107.3 WAAF-FM (Worcester, MA) from Dec. 25, 1982.  That version is almost certainly from the 2-LP syndicated radio show NBC The Source #NBC 82-54 that had a broadcast window date of December 23, 1982.  The NBC The Source version drops the songs All The Young Girls Love Alice, Better Off Dead, Elton's Song, Chloe, Daniel, Crocodile Rock, and the closing Medley.

There is a bootleg CD called Starlight '82 that is variously listed as a "board tape"
or a "Master analog cassette recording of the original broadcast on WNEW-FM in NYC."

There is also
a bootleg CD called Kansas City (Starlight, Starbright) with 13 songs.

This version isn't from any of those sources.

This version is digitized from a tape from the collection of Art Collins of Rolling Stones Records
that I purchased on Ebay. The two cassettes (a Maxell UD-90 and a Maxell UD-60 low-bias tapes) had professionally printed "Starfleet Blair Inc." cassette labels. Some of the commercials were partially edited to make them shorter, so it's likely this was copied from another tape.  One of the songs (Rocket Man) is also cut where there's a tape flip...so it's not some sort of pre-FM tape, either.

So...it's not a master tape of the broadcast in spite of the professional labels. From listening to it, it's low generation. There's very little hiss (sounds like one generation), and no radio static.  It doesn't sound compressed...I can't test to see if there's an FM carrier signal embedded, so I don't know if it's "pre-FM" or not.  My guess is that it's not a pre-FM, but that this is is a first generation copy edited from the original broadcast. However...the low bias tapes mean this is a tiny bit "low fi" compared to what I normally digitize for you.

But the "Starfleet Blair" labels indicate this was produced close to the source of broadcast...so if you don't have this already, give it a shot and let me know what you think.

I've edited out the commercials,  but left in all the radio announcements, and the rather long segments of the audience noise. Everything is tracked, so you can drop it out or advance to the next track if you don't want to wait a minute for band to get back on the stage.

According to Claude Bernardin and Tom Stanton's book, "Rocket Man: Elton John A-Z,"
"The July 7 show in Kansas City was broadcast over radio, becoming the most successful broadcast carried by the NBC network.  The broadcast took a 15.9 share among adult listeners 18 to 24."

Los Lobos / The Plant, Sausalito, CA July 30, 1994 KFOG-FM

We had a recent request for a re-post of a Los Lobos show, which we couldn't fulfill.  However, I happened to have a tape in the basement that needed to be digitized so here's Los Lobos playing a noon-time in-studio radio show.  The songs are from their albums "The Neighborhood" and "Colossal Head" so it's not the usual "La Bamba" era set list.  I hope you like it.  This is straight from my master copy of the broadcast. All right sinners this is what happens when your life is full of sin. Take the case of this heathen, Ray Manzarek he was in a band with the devil himself. Singing songs about "Lighting My Bible On Fire" "The End Of Christianity" "When The Music's Over Go Out And Sin"  "Back Door Man Has Anal Sex" and many many others. Oh the debauchery. I have no back cover for his first CD with this band of sinners but the hymns are:

This copy sourced from Hans DeVente's tape posted on his blog in February 2013.

The first 26 seconds had extremely low volume on the left channel.  I normalized it to match the right channel but this increased the hiss on the left channel. I think it sounds better than it did when it was out-of-balance.  I smoothed out a volume drop in "Animals."  There's a tape flip in "Super Saleman" and an appreciable amount of music was lost.  "Africa" cuts off after the dj starts talking.  So...it's an imperfect tape, but there's not much Ayers out there.

Foo Fighters / Live From The Pit - Garage, Cincinnati, OH Aug. 4, 1997

This show is the Foo Fighter’s second appearance on “Live From The Pit.” It’s the same format as the Matthew Sweet LFTP show I posted back in 2013,  up to and including the same interview questions (“Who’s your favorite Spice Girl?”)

I guess when you’ve come up with a great question like that, you might as well beat it to death, eh?

This is sourced from original discs of the syndicated show. I edited out the commercials. I’ve included 300 dpi scans of the cue sheets and discs, and all of the promo commercials.

The "Live From Electric Ladyland" series was produced from 1990 into 1993 by Group W Broadcasting and distributed by Bullet Productions.

This show was hosted by Pat St. John, who previously hosted "SuperGroups In Concert," and “A Night On The Road” shows in the early 1980s, these "Live From Electric Ladyland" shows in the early 1990s, and in future years the Live From The House Of Blues Presented by Pontiac Sunfire shows in 1995/1996. At the time, Pat was the morning man on WNEW-FM out of New York City, and sometimes their Program Director.

The distribution schedule is unclear, with five shows in 1990, seven in 1991, two in 1992, and five in 1993. As I have gathered that information from EBAY listings and Discogs.com, it's possible there are more shows.

The first three shows were distributed on cassette tape.  I've also seen a reel-to-reel for the Jeff Healey show.  After that, the shows were on CD...with two exceptions (Jethro Tull, Kinks. See below).  The recording date was on most of the CDs, which also had "The Album Network" and WNEW logos on them.

I search for new information when I post a show, and found 14 promotional posters on Ebay.  Many of the posters included the broadcast date.

On cassette:
Santana, recorded August 4, 1990, promo poster broadcast date September 7, 1990
Damn Yankees, recorded July 23, 1990, promo poster broadcast date August 3
Jeff Healey, unknown recording date promo poster broadcast date August 17, 1990

Jethro Tull, recorded August 20, 1991.  Broadcast date unknown. This show falls right in the middle of the second year of the series. All of the other shows are on CD at that point.  No CD seems to exist of this show.  There is an Album Network cassette.  I have never seen a reel of this show.

On CD:
Little Feat, recorded October 15, 1990 promo poster broadcast date Thanksgiving Night, November 22, Mt Vernon Argus says Nov. 15
Living Colour, recorded December 8, 1990
Slaughter, recorded March 27, 1991 promo poster broadcast date Friday April 26
The Fixx, recorded April 29, 1991
Great White, recorded May 21, 1991 promo poster broadcast date Friday, July 19
Roger McGuinn, recorded July 19, 1991 promo poster broadcast date Friday, August 16
.38 Special, recorded August 12, 1991 promo poster broadcast date Friday, September 27
(the Jethro Tull was recorded August 20, 1991)
Alice Cooper, recorded September 1991 promo poster broadcast date October 31, 1991
Ron Wood, recorded November 2, 1992 promo poster says “airing this month”
Bad Company, recorded December 13, 1992 (2 cds)
Paul Rodgers, recorded April 29, 1993 promo poster broadcast date “airing this month”
Foreigner, recorded 1993 (only the year is printed on CD)
Pat Benatar, recorded June 1993 (only month and year on CD) promo poster broadcast date “coming in August”
George Thorogood, recorded July 22, 1993 promo poster broadcast date “this month”  Billboard 1998-08-21 says "in August"

Broadcast only: ??
Kinks May 12, 1993 (confirmed to exist, but does not appear to  have been syndicated) date confirmed in Daily News newspaper.  There is a tape of the broadcast of this show labeled as "WNAW."  It was actually WNEW-FM.

It is rumored that there are two additional shows:
Procol Harum '91
Melissa Ethridge Unknown date.

These are unconfirmed at this time...if anyone knows anything about them, please leave a comment. As Dr. Strange said, "Please...Scooby-Doo this ****."

The Bad Company show appears to be the only 2-cd show in the series.

One more in our ongoing exploration of syndicated radio shows...."Live From Electric Ladyland" was produced by the Album Network in conjunction with New York's WNEW radio station. Copies don't turn up on Ebay very often so they probably produced fewer copies than King Biscuit or Westwood One.  I've now update this with a cue sheet.

Oh how I pray for you sinners.  Everyday coming here looking for sexual gratification. Naked women and their titties hanging out. REPENT REPENT. It is not too late. I too used to look at titties then run into the bathroom.  But I've found the way to control my never-ending obsessional cravings. Ask me Father Jobe for forgiveness and I will personally call on Jesus to see if he will forgive you. Amen. * From Father Jobe's personal scriptures.  See Scans
