Doug Kershaw / Springfield, IL, NBC Country Sessions show #16 (or maybe #15....)

Doug Kershaw
NBC Country Sessions show #16 (or maybe #15)
Recorded in Springfield, Illinois
Air Date: June 28, 1981.

The run-out groove writing etched into the vinyl says "NBC-DK-16A" and "NBC-DK-16B."

Note that the EBAY listing identified this record as Show #15 but the vinyl etching says it's Show #16.

While the Ebay listing said the sale included a cue sheet, it wasn't included...and for a $6.00 record, I wasn't going to complain.  The vinyl was quite noisy but I spent the Thanksgiving holiday doing the best I could to clean it up, and the final result is quite listenable.

The commercials are done by the late Pat Summeral, who holds the record for announcing the most Super Bowls.

Kershaw is a fiddle player, playing Cajun music.  Fans of Dave Edmunds might recognize his song "Louisiana Man," covered by Edmunds on his D.E. 7th LP, which has become a standard, being recorded by over 800 artists.  Kershaw did a guest spot on the Rolling Stones 1978 tour in Ft. Worth, adding fiddle licks to "Far Away Eyes."

The NBC Country Sessions series of syndicated radio shows is entirely new to me.  I particularly like the disc label that says "This record must be destroyed after broadcast."

.....and here for your delectation is this week's project,  a fresh digitization of a Westwood One In Concert with the pairing of the Smithereens and the late Jeff Healey.  I know most of you don't give a fig for the commercials, but the Eddie Money public service message is notable for his ridiculous "and hug a fat chick" line.

Jackson Browne / RAI Congresgebow, Amsterdam, Netherlands FM

One of our readers was kind enough to share his chaptered and speed-corrected version of one of Hans Devente's tapes.  The following are Propylaen2001's notes on the recording:

Jackson Browne

Notes:
First European tour
Warren Zevon opened

A good part of this concert was broadcast by Dutch FM radio. The "Amsterdam 1976" bootleg on the 'Days Of Harvest' label was reportedly made from this broadcast. Strangely, the bootleg has "Our Lady Of The Well" as the last song after "Before The Deluge". "Our Lady Of The Well" is not present on this recording, and I have serious doubts if it was played at all since that usually would have been after "Take It Easy" and as luck would have it there appears to be no cut between "Take It Easy" and "The Pretender". Anybody knows if it's really "Our Lady Of The Well" on that bootleg, or if it's been tagged on from a different recording?

Slight speed correction by +0.3 semitones applied.
There are cuts between most of the tracks resulting in rough track transitions.
Tape flip after track 9.

Lords Of Acid - Voodoo-U -1994 {Out of Print}

Lords Of Acid - Voodoo-U -1994
Studio Recordings @320
{Out Of Print}

The perfect post for this psycho Saturday...

This was the album that introduced me to Lords of Acid, and I have loved them ever since. Their remarkable blending of screaming guitars with hardcore acid techno, coupled with sexually explicit, humorous and drug infested lyrics is something to really get the blood going, while at the same time possessing a good sense of electronic fusion that makes Lords Of Acid rise above the other bands in their genre.

The cover to this record definitely gives you a preview of what you will hear inside.
For all those who haven't listened to Lords Of Acid and are curious about them, this is definitely the record to listen to first.

J.B. Lenoir, Sunnyland Slim & Friends - Nina's Lounge
Chicago 1963
Soundboard Recording @ 256
{Rare and Out of Print}

Chicago, 1963, Nina's Lounge on the West Side. A small club with a little homemade stage in the corner & an old upright piano off to the left of the stage. Not as well known as Pepper's, Sylvio's, or Teresa's, Nina's was the center of Chicago blues on July 9, 1963. Norman Dayron, student at the University of Chicago, armed with an Ampex tape recorder and a pair of Electro Voice mics placed just right, recorded this exceptional night of blues. On piano, Sunnyland Slim,On guitar J. B Lenoir. Eighteen tunes, one hour, and done. Helping on vocals John Lee Granderson, doing three tunes. Sunnyland & JB split the vocals on the rest. Sneakin' in from the alley, on guitar, Mike Bloomfield. You are sittin' first row. You are there. Live Blues gets no better then this. As intimate a CD as I have heard in a long time. Sunnyland & JB playin' & preaching the blues, as uncomplicated as it gets. WARNING, this is an acoustic CD. This is one helluva good live performance.

*Original Notes*
This is a repost from the FBSVIP!
On somebody`s request!
We hope you will love it like we do!

Doesn`t he look smart? Alex Harvey! But forgive me, please: This guy is a bomb!
The show starts with a hypnotizing "Faith Healer". Alex Harvey is out of his cage! Not to stop anymore! It`s too late!

This is not a common concert, this sounds like a BIG PARTY for the Alex Harvey Family. Absolute extraordinary! And so is the audience! They are clapping their hands, and singing with Alex...I`m just listening to the show and what can I say. Pure energy! Showers running down my neck...and I wish I would have been there, too!

Too bad,that the SAHB didn`t get the appreciation they sould have deserved!

Set List:

4.Vambo
5.Hoolie Hoolie Koocha

Sound quality is excellent!
I would be pleased to get some comments.

STIKKY - KFJC Studios, Los Altos Hills, CA June 19, 1988 - FM Broadcast

And then we bring the PUNK...in this case, STIKKY, a Bay Area hard core punk band from the 1980s.  Noisy, lots of tempo changes, loud vocals descending into raw-throated screaming....great stuff and they're FUNNY AS HELL on their between song chatter.  Plus, they hit the SPIDERMAN theme song YEARS before the Ramones got to it......my only regret is that I was a cheap bastard and didn't use a high bias tape on this one.....

...if you're curious because you haven't heard 'em, go check 'em out on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRZ5K2zimXo

Noisy fun....as far as I'm concerned, but if you don't immediately like that, you'll hate this, so don't download it!

Ian Hunter - Berkeley Community Theatre, July 7, 1979 KSAN-FM

The July 7, 1979 Ian Hunter show from the Berkeley Community Theatre circulated widely on the “Drunk On Wine And Wisdom" bootleg. For many years, that was one of the only Ian Hunter bootlegs available.

But if you have that bootleg....check this out. I digitized this in July 2011 from an uncirculated master cassette.

The cassette is of a later rebroadcast of the July 1979 show that I believe to be from October of 1980. The deejay refers to the show as a “Rock-tober Special” which gives us a month, and the Don Wehr Music City commercial references the start of the Iran - Iraq War (“while Iran and Iraq are cutting each other in half, we’re cutting prices in half….”) which started in late September of 1980….so that gives us October of 1980.

I left the Don Wehr commercial in;  I used to buy guitar equipment there (as did most of San Francisco's famous bands, and they also rented gear to many touring bands playing the Fillmore and Winterland...)   Plus, its tasteless, topical and references vintage effect pedals ("even the Ayatollah could use a Crybaby Wah-wah pedal about now...").  It gives you a feel for the era when a LOCAL guitar emporium was running ads on a LOCAL radio station.  While I enjoy Guitar Center as much as the next guy, it's not the same!

There is a long tape flip at the start of “Cleveland Rocks,” so I used a patch from the 6/18/79 Cleveland show to make the gap less jarring. (Yeah, I patched "Cleveland Rocks" with a patch FROM Cleveland.....) The last three songs had increasingly worse radio static and distortion issues, but I spent many hours minimizing the problems with Audacity.

So....it's still not perfect (there must be a copy without a tape flip....), but most of this is better than any copy you've heard before, if you owned the bootleg LP. The first three quarters of this sound incredible, for a thirty year old tape.
