The Ike and Tina Turner Review, University Of Maine, Portland, Maine, March 24, 1974

(I don't know why or where the Weekend Gang has gone, but I'm gonna push this plane to Seattle myself if they don't lay down some posts for us....)

(From the 'net): There was a time when the Ike and Tina Turner Revue was one of the hottest, most durable, and potentially most explosive of all R&B ensembles.

Fronted by Tina, with one of the rawest, most sensual and impossibly dynamic voices in Black music, the Ike And Tina Revue was an ensemble that dripped musical discipline while manifesting nearly unbearable tension, eventually giving way to wave upon wave of catharsis. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue were rivaled only by James Brown and The Fabulous Flames in terms of musical spectacle.

I have spoken about Ike and his behavior with someone who worked with them: Bonnie Bramlett, the only white woman to sing as an "Ikette," one of the back-up singers. She was very hesitant to discuss his reputation--and said he had treated her very kindly and with respect. I know that's a hard thing to believe in view of the movie about Ike and Tina (with terrific performances by Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne), but she was firm on that: he was on his best behavior. They are very rarely featured on posts; the only other one I've ever seen was a deleted link.
Ike Turner died in December 2007. Tina continues to perform and move those hottest of legs.

Bryan Lee - Braille Blues Daddy of Guitar (videos)

This came from an Amazon.com posting I did on November 6, 2003, from Bryan's CD,
Live at the Old Absinthe House (Friday Night)
:

Tabasco-style blues

At my high school reunion, a classmate named Kevin McMahon cornered me near the bar, handed me a CD, said that he liked my Roy Buchanan article--and insisted I needed to hear this guy. He was 100% right: Lee is the hot Daddy of Bad Blues and he commands respect. The story goes that Bryan plays in a bar in New Orleans and doesn't really leave the place--it's a home to him--and that special guests come to visit. We're talking special guests like James Cotton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Frank Marino (of Mahogany Rush).

Quick! my asbestos gloves, because what Stevie Wonder can do with a keyboard, Bryan Lee does with a guitar, and that is scorching good music. Oh, yeah, he's blind, too. We're talking raw, skin-it-alive Fender Stratocaster, folks. Can he sing? Nasty, raspy, and when he screeches, I swear the last time that kind of sound crossed my ears was in metal shop. The backup band's support is hot enough to melt lead, and there's more available. For an extra treat, try his "Crawfish Lady": both the music and the recipe are found on that disc. I warn you: there's no putting out this fire with any known substance, because Bryan Lee is too hot to control except under his own terms.

Fear & Lee Ving

"One of the funniest memories of my life is witnessing three drunken marines in San Francisco backing down after they’d been cooing at Lee Ving, “I smell pussy,” or some such shit. Lee, whose hair was Krazy-Kolored shocking pink, whipped his shirt off Jap-Action style right in the street and stared ‘em down, snarling, It’s my natural color, honey. Donchu li’l darlin’s just love it? They ran."
~Brendan Mullen

I met Lee Ving once and got to spend some time talking to him when doing a write up for a now defunct music rag in Ohio. Over a cold beer I found out Lee is a funny, smart, no fuckin' around kind of guy. He says "It's all about marketing don't you know."

Cajun wedding

Just what we need here to show folks just how things are down on the bayou of Louisiana. They can tell if you're from the South by the way it's said: If you're a Yankee or from anywhere else, y'all call it "Lou-ee-zee-anna." Jools Holland is a huge New Orleans fan.

But if y'all from "Nawlins" especially, you know that home is "Lou-zee-yanna." Yeah, another hurricane is gonna hit it again someday--but meanwhile, come on down and have a bowl of gumbo at the wedding. We'll go shooting at the reception.

Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butchers Ballroom 2006

Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butchers Ballroom
Studio Recordings @ HQvbr
Posted under Creative Commons License

After about first 5 seconds I knew I was going to enjoy this. Diablo Swing Orchestra brings a swirling mix of jazz, opera, metal, classical, swing and gypsy influences to the table . This Swedish band stands out above other classical metal bands. By adding jazzy double bass and gypsy violin sounds, topped off with some Spanish acoustic guitar work they have come up with a unique sound. I never thought of myself listening to a mixture of metal, jazz and classic. At least until I found this album. This band live should be a hell of a show.

Golden Age spun off another hit with "I Hate My Generation," and the band toured in support of its release. After returning home from the road, Lowery began focusing on his Richmond-based recording studio, Sound of Music, where he produced such artists as Joan Osborne, Lauren Hoffman, Magnet, Fighting Gravity, and Sparklehorse. He also co-produced the Counting Crows along with former Camper Van Beethoven producer Dennis Herring. Lowery's work wasn't limited to the music world, however, as he co-starred in director Eric Drilling's independent film River Red (also composing the film's score) and appeared in another film, director Matt Leutwyler's This Space Between Us. By the end of the decade, Cracker seemed to have settled on a somewhat permanent lineup comprised of drummer Frank Funaro, keyboardist/accordion player Kenny Margolis, and the preexisting core of Lowery, Hickman, and Rupe. This version of the band issued 1998's Gentleman's Blues, a more reflective album that saw the musicians paying homage to Southern rock and blues. Camper Van Beethoven unexpectedly re-formed shortly thereafter, and Lowery began splitting his time between both bands, whose other members frequently joined whichever group was on the road. Cracker (along with select musicians from CVB) issued a live album, 2001's Traveling Apothecary Show & Revue, and Cracker followed its release with Forever (2002) and a rowdy set of country covers called Countrysides in 2003. The latter album also marked Cracker's first effort as an independent band, as they had recently left the Virgin roster. Three years later, Cracker returned (this time via the U.K.-based indie label Cooking Vinyl) with Greenland, which featured help from guest artists David Immerglück and Mark Linkous. Another concert release, Berlin (Live in Berlin December 2006), arrived in 2008, and the studio effort Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey followed one year later in 2009.
