Doobie Brothers - Superstar Concert 92-24 - Bally's, Las Vegas

Doobie Brothers
Superstar Concert Series
Show #92-24
for the weekend of June 13-14, 1992

Recorded "on the last leg of their tour"
on October 11, 1991-10-11
at the Celebrity Showroom at Bally's, Las Vegas

They mention the "Nevada moon" during Black Water which provides evidence of which state they were in at the time of the recording.  Normally, we'd be stuck not knowing if the show was in Reno or Las Vegas. However, 99-40 is a compilation show, and the start of "The Doctor" has an added introduction, "Las Vegas!  How y'all doin' out there this evening?"

This is the same show as 90-04.  Almost.  The editing is slightly different, and it may be a different mix from the master tapes.  The first is easy to identify.  "Neal's Fandango" has a spoken intro on 90-04: "This is a tune for everybody down in Santa Cruz, all the surfers know where Santa Cruz is, right?"

That's been edited out on 90-27 / 90-39.

In listening to the shows, at several points you can hear that the audience noise is mixed differently into the show.

Now, you'll notice that I'm identifying this show as having two numbers...that leads to today's essay on the investigation into (cue the Twilight Zone theme music...)

The Henley-Doobie Discontinuity:
The 1990 Westwood One Numbering Change

Between 1983 and 1989, the numbering system for the Superstar Concert series was the last two digits of the year (83, 84, 85...) with an ascending show number (83-1, 83-2, 83-4...)

The shows did not run every week, and the second number wasn't tied to a specific week.

In 1991, the number of shows increased to one show per week, so the numbers ran from 91-1 to 91-52.  And each show corresponds to a specific week of the year.

But 1990 isn't so easy to figure out.  The year starts out like previous years.  The first show was the first week of February, and the shows were running every two weeks, and the numbers went up from 90-01 to 90-14.

90-01 Don Henley 90-01 (disc & cue) February 3-4, 1990
90-02 Moscow Music & Peace Festival 90-02 (disc & cue) weekend of February 16-18, 1990
90-03 Steve Winwood 90-03 (disc & cue) weekend of March 3-4, 1990
90-04 Doobie Brothers 90-04 (disc & cue) weekend of March 17-18, 1990
90-05 Tom Petty 90-05 (disc & cue) weekend of March 30-April 1, 1990
90-06 Talking Heads 90-06 (disc & cue) weekend of April 14-15, 1990
90-07 Robert Palmer 90-07 (disc & cue) weekend of April 28-29, 1990
90-08 Aerosmith 90-08 (disc & cue) weekend of May 12-13, 1990
90-09 Farm Aid 90-09 (disc & cue) weekend of May 26-27, 1990
90-10 Farm Aid 90-10 (disc & cue) weekend of June 2-3, 1990
90-11 Rod Stewart 90-11  (disc & cue) weekend of June 9-10, 1990
90-12 The Who 90-12  (disc & cue) weekend of June 16-17, 1990
90-13 Moody Blues 90-13 (disc & cue) weekend of June 23-24, 1990
90-14 Neil Young 90-14 (disc & cue) weekend of June 30 - July 1, 1990

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

This is where things get weird. We've entered the Henley-Doobie Discontinuity.

The discs continue the prior numbering, but the cue sheets are the disc number, plus 12.

The disc number matches the prior numbering system; the cue sheet number lines up with a new system where there is a number assigned to each week of the year, running 1 to 52 for the 52 weeks of the year.

We enter the H-D Discontinuity at 90-15...

Don Henley 90-15 (discs) / 90-27 (cue sheet) weekend of July 2, 1990
Allman Brothers 90-16 (discs) / 90-28 (cue sheet) weekend of July 14-15th, 1990
Bruce Hornsby 90-17 (discs) / 90-29 (cue sheet) weekend of July 21-22, 1990
Stevie Nicks 90-18 (discs) / 90-30 (cue sheet) weekend of July 28-29, 1990
Guns and Roses 90-19 (discs) / 90-31 (cue sheet) weekend of August 4-5, 1990
Jackson Browne / Eddie Money 90-20 (discs) / 90-32 (cue sheet) weekend of August 8 - 11, 1990
Steve Miller 90-21 (discs) 90-33 (cue sheet) weekend of August 17-19, 1990
Tom Petty 90-22 (discs)/90-34 (cue sheet) weekend of August 26-28, 1990
Eric Clapton 90-23 (discs)/ 90-35 (cue sheet) weekend of September 1-2, 1990
Stevie Ray Vaughan 90-24 (discs) / 90-36 (cue sheet) weekend of September 8-9, 1990
Little Feat 90-25 (discs) / 90-37 (cue sheet) weekend of September 15/16, 1990
Elton John 90-26 (discs)/90-38 (cue sheet) weekend of September 22-23, 1990
Doobie Brothers 90-27 (discs) / 90-39 (cue sheet) weekend of September 29-30, 1990

...and leave it at 90-39.  There are 13 shows, but we've jumped from 90-15 to 90-39.

As we leave the Henley-Doobie Discontinuity, the discs and cue sheet numbers match,
and the number corresponds to the week of the year. However, they're not producing
a show for every week, they're running every other week (and skipping the Christmas week, too).

This means there are seven numbers as placeholders, there are no shows.

90-40
90-41 Rod Stewart (disc and cue match from here on...) weekend of October 13-14, 1990
90-42
90-43 Aerosmith weekend of October 27-28, 1990
90-44
90-45 Bruce Hornsby weekend of December 8-9, 1990
90-46
90-47 David Bowie weekend of November 24-25, 1990
90-48
90-49 Black Crowes/Robert Cray weekend of December 8-9, 1990
90-50
90-51
90-52 Talking Heads weekend of December 29-30, 1990

The H-D Discontinuity has created great confusion on Discogs, with shows being identified as separate shows instead of one show with two numbers.

With the Doobie Brothers...is this show 90-27, or 90-39?  I'm choosing to call it 90-27 / 90-39.  It's both!

From Discogs:
"Recorded live in Honolulu, Hawaii during the Cycles Tour in support of their most recent album (at that time) Doobie Brothers - Cycles, this outing captures a large portion of the show from that night. Some of these tracks can be also found on the unofficial video release Doobie Brothers - In Concert - Live From Hawaii."

Comes with 300 dpi scans of the Certificate of Performance, cue sheet, box cover, and all six disc labels.

Sound is excellent for the most part, although there's one or two places were the mix wobbles a bit due to pressing defects...but it's fractions of a second.

The Waikiki Shell looks like a beautiful outdoor venue, and look at that date!  January?  How many outdoor concerts happen in January?  That's the tropics for you...

The wonderful Steve Downes is back once again to hold down the Intros and the Outros.  I recently discovered there's a brisk trade in HALO items autographed by Steve Downes over on Ebay.  There are dozens of items with his signature up for auction.  A "Steve Downes Signed & Inscribed HALO Master Chief Helmet" will run you $247.95.

This was the first appearance by Doobie Brothers on Westwood One's Superstar Concert series.  The same set list was broadcast in July 1990 as 90-27, and in September as 90-39.  This is usual for there to be three identical shows in one year.  Discogs says that 91-51 is the same show, but the sets lists I've seen do not match.

The History of the Doobie Brothers On Westwood One

The History of the Doobie Brothers On Westwood One

Westwood One began syndicating concerts in the spring of 1981 with the "In Concert" series.  The Doobie Brothers broke up in the summer of 1982 without recording anything for syndication by Westwood One.  The Doobies were absent from Westwood One from 1981 to 1990, with no appearances on either the Superstar Concert or In Concert, or any of the various Isle of Dreams faux-concerts.

The band reformed and released a new album in May 1989. A new album put them back on the road on tour, and Westwood One was there to record and syndicate them.

In 1990, their January 25, 1990 show from the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu was broadcast twice on Westwood One's Superstar Concert Series as 90-04 and 90-27 / 90-39.  The second of the two shows has two identifying numbers as Westwood One changed their numbering system mid-year.  The first number is on the record labels, the second is on the cue sheets. Both shows have identical set lists. The numbering issue for 90-27 / 90-39 makes it look there are three syndications for this Waikiki show, but there are only two boxes.

A show from Nevada in 1991 was broadcast twice as shows 91-51, and 92-24. While there's no attribution of the source by the announcer, the band references the "Nevada moon" during Black Water. A portion of this show was later rebroadcast in a compilation show, and this later version includs an introduction identifying the city as Las Vegas. A quick look at the Interne reveals the venue is the Celebrity Showroom at Bally's Las Vegas.

During the tour for the 1991 album, Bobby LaKind was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer and left the band.  This led to McDonald and Jeff Baxter rejoining the band for two shows to benefit LaKind and his family.  Three shows were sourced from the benefit concert at the Concord Pavilion in 1992. Tracks from this show were used for 90-05, 93-35, and 94-37, with each show using a slightly different set list.
90-35 drops "Dangerous" from the set used for 90-05, but adds "Listen To The Music."  94-37 adds "Dangerous" back to the set list, keeps "Listen To The Music," and drops "Black Water."

In 1995, the September 8, 1995 from the Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, CA was broadcast as 95-51.

After this, Westwood One assembled a compilation show from the 1991 Las Vegas, 1992 Concord, and 1995 Mountain View concerts.  This adds a unique version of "Slack Key Soquel Rag" from Shoreline not on the original broadcast, and an introduction from the Nevada show that proves the source was Las Vegas.

This three source compilation show was broadcast four times as 99-40, 00-20, 01-31, and 02-45.
After Westwood One reduced the Superstar Concert from a 2-cd 90 minute show to a 1 cd one hour show, the compilation show was reworked so that it was sourced from two years instead of three.  Five tracks from the 1991 Las Vegas show were dropped, but four of them were replaced versions from the 1992 Concord show.  "Rockin' Down the Highway," "Jesus Is Just Alright," "The Doctor" and "Black Water" are the tracks that were swapped out for 1992 versions.

I think this reworked compilation was broadcast as 05-28, 06-33, and 08-38.  I've only got the 08-38 version, but the track list running order matches 05-38 and 06-33, so it's likely that all the tracks are from '92 and '95.

I have ten of the fifteen shows I've identified, and I'll be posting them this week. There may be a few more out there, as the later years of Westwood One are harder to document.  They transitioned from CD-R media to downloads ("call your Westwood One Affiliate Sales Rep for your user name and password"), so the number of copies they pressed up on physical media got smaller and smaller.

Do you need all of these versions?  Probably not, but there are slight variations in the mixing.

When you play the same take from different shows, you can hear that Westwood One edits in the crowd noise at different volumes and for differing lengths of time.  And it's not the same crowd noise.  There are various hoots, whistles, and yells that are different, even though the underlying music is the same.
A good example of this is the version of "Long Train Runnin'" from the 1995 Shoreline show.  As the song starts, they introduce Steve Miller as a guest.  On 00-20, there's a swell of applause after they say Miller's name that's absent on the other three sources.

This is ridiculously great! This recording presents them at their peak. Little Feat has one of the greatest rhythm sections ever. The sound quality is great and the performance is outstanding! Check out The Fan, Fat Man In The Bath Tub or Spanish Moon at least.
Why Little Feat isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is a mystery to me. They induct people like John Mellencamp, The Ventures and The Dave Clark Five this year, and still no Little Feat? Where is the love?

I thought we had put this up long ago but I was wrong again as usual!

Roger Waters / Westwood One In Concert / Quebec Nov. 7, 1987

Roger Waters
Westwood One In Concert

This is not a pre-FM. This is from an off-the-air master cassette I recorded. While the show number is not confirmed, it is likely Westwood One In Concert IC 87-24, originally broadcast on 11/23/87.

Recorded at
Colisée de Québec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
on November 7, 1987.

01 Steve Downes - WW1 In Concert Intro
02 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Questions from fans
03 Steve Downes - WW1 In Concert Intro 2
04 Jim Ladd - Radio K.A.O.S. Intro
05 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Radio Waves
06 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Welcome To The Machine
07 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Money
08 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - In The Flesh
09 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Have A Cigar
10 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
11 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Wish You Were Here
12 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Mother
13 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert, Southampton Dock
14 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - If
15 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - The Powers That Be
16 Steve Downes - WW1 In Concert Break
17 Announcer - KRQR
18 Announcer - Heart Tour Update
19 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Brain Damage
20 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Eclipse
21 Steve Downes - WW1 In Concert Break
22 Roger Waters & the Bleeding Heart Band - Another Brick In The Wall
23 Steve Downes - WW1 In Concert Outro
24 Johnny Young - KRQR Outro

This is from my master cassette.  On my cassette, I cut out the commercials, so they're not included.

There is a circulating version on Guitars 101 with the date of May 22, 1987.  That date is incorrect. I've included a newspaper review of the concert that confirms the recording date was November 7, 1987.

That version edits out Steve Downes announcements and leaves out the Jim Ladd/Roger Waters segment where Waters takes questions from fans. The sound quality is about the same as my cassette, so if you've got that, you probably don't need this...but I've got some extras for you:

Roger Waters and his former band Pink Floyd toured Canada at the same time.  Overlapping tours using the same source material meant the rival bands sniped at each other in interviews. Concert reviews covered not only the band on stage but the other band that wasn't playing that night. I dug up over thirty newspaper clippings for you to read while you enjoy this recording.

Country Style USA was a radio program syndicated by the US Army Band and Recruiting Services and broadcast as a recruiting tool for them.

Produced by the U.S. Treasury Department in the 1940s and 1950s as a public service program, Guest Star features a different often top-name "guest star" (singer, actor, comedian) each week to promote the sales of savings bonds

Previoulsy circulated with incorrect dates of 1958 & 1959. listening to talk n these and doing a bit of digging around determined to be earlier broadcast than originally circulated as

*13 . Get Rhythm " Our Latest Release on Sun" - recorded 1956
released as the B side of Walk The Line - April 2 1956

Difficult to pin down an actual date on this - the website  http://www.otrsite.com/logs/logc1075.htm starts at episode 39 broadcast 07-05-1956 - these would have been recorded at least a couple weeks before broadcast - it is very possible that a May - June 1956 recording date is correct here since that would be correct time in regards to a latest release

1959-06-28  Guest Star best guess per http://www.otrcat.com/guest-star-radio-p-1350.html

Yes you will find these programs for sale online , however these programs were produced by the US Government originally and as such have fallen into the public domain

See if you can guess what song I'm referring too by my following posts. Oh yeah thanks to the original poster. See scans.

16 Hooters, The - Man In The Street (cut off)

From the Sam Eliot's Mustache collection!

Early stuff... lots of unreleased songs here.  If you're a fan of the Hooters, you'll find this tape interesting.  Sound quality is pretty great for a forty year old cassette tape.

The last song ("Man In The Street") cuts off just before the end of the show, right at 59 minutes and 50 seconds.  This was likely the last song.  It's a cover of a Don Drummond & the Skatalites song that was a Top 10 hit in the UK in the fall of 1965.

They dedicate the song to WYSP program director Michael Picozzi.

Now...that's a pretty obscure cover.  These days, here in the future where we can hear every song by saying "Alexa, play "Man In The Street" by Don Drummond" it seems like nothing...but in 1983?  Who the HECK knew Don Drummond in 1983?

And yes, I just walked out into the kitchen, and said "Alexa, play Don Drummond "Man In The Street" and sure enough, the 1964 Studio Records 45 started playing.  Just like that, I ask for music and I get it.

The future is both wonderful (in that everything is available) and terrible for the same reason. Being ahead of the curve...like the Hooters... isn't special anymore.

But seriously...the Hooters had interesting, diverse, and obscure influences.

Flac files of wavs.  Includes scans of the cassettes, J-cards, and a concert review.

The version of "Two Of Me, Two Of You" is different than the album version, and may be unique to this show.  Does anyone know for sure?  If so, leave a comment!

Bootlegged as:

U.S.A. 1994 Arriba! ARR 94.087 (Germany, 1994) with 13 tracks
Everyman's Alive   Royal Sound Music RSM 047-2 (Germany, 1994)

with incorrect date of March 27, 1994

Oregon 1994 - Supersonic SS 202043/44 (Japan)
with incorrect date of March 27, 1994

Eugene Oregon 1994 - Live At The Hult Centre For The Performing Arts Leftfield Media LFM2CD551 (2016)
with the correct date of March 24, 1994 inside the booklet, but with the back of the booklet saying March 1, 1994.

The Broadcast Archive (discs 3 and 4) BSCD6076 (no country, 2018)
with the incorrect date listed as March 1, 1994

Discogs confirms "Silva Hall, Hult Center for the Performing Arts."'

Okay, gang... ya see how one bootlegger picks up and repeats errors from another label?  You can't just accept the dates on these things, you have to check it.  And I was able to track down an actual review of the concert.  Mr. Browne sold out the Eugene show (and two other shows in Portland, 110 miles north of Eugene).

You can tell it was the 1990s because the labels on the cassettes were printed with a dot matrix printer.

Excellent quality and a great set - the band are effusive and the crowd are really into it. The choral singing of thousands of people on the end of 'Run' is amazing.

Probably not the entire show...
