Thoughts on Vulkan - Part 3 - Troops

As they're somewhat spread out (for which I apologise) the previous parts can be found at the following links,

Part One

Part Two

Okay so we covered HQ's and Elites so the next logical place is the Troops section,

Troops.
So we have a whole two choices here and as I see little use for Scouts in a Vulkan themed list so we'll move straight onto Tactical Marines.

Tactical Squad.

So our basic 5 Marine squad will set us back 90 points and requires upgrading to 10 men before we start to get access to useful toys bringing the total up to 170 points and as were already paying 190 points to gain Vulkan then we only really want to take upgrades that are complimented by him.
That means weapon-wise were looking at a Flamer or Meltagun as our special weapon, a Multi-Melta for our heavy weapon selection and possibly a Combi-Weapon (or two*) on our Sergeant. They'll obviously need some form of transport and I tend to favour Rhino's in a Vulkan list as we can shoot out of the top without exposing ourselves to anti-personnel fire.

* Yes two. Bolt Pistol can be swapped for one and so can his Boltgun. I'm not sure how often I'd do this but it's a useful way of adding an anti-personnel weapon to a squad that's gone all melta with it's options ;-)

My 'Default' Marine Configuration in a standard Marine list is usually this,

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 205 pts)
   9 Tactical Squad @ 205 pts (Flamer; Multi-melta; Rhino)
      1 Sergeant
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

But though it has weapons that take advantage of Vulkan's special rules it doesn't really take full advantage of them. Combi-weapons on Sergeants are a relatively cheap way of enhancing a units fire-power and with the benefit of Vulkans Twin-linking combined with BS4 is very reliable. The choices were going to have to make are between Flamer or Melta or if were feeling flush we can give him both.

I'd never really considered giving a sergeant two combi-weapons until I saw Stelek's use of two special weapons on Honour Guard Squads in Blood Angels lists and the principle seemed fairly sound. Even though Combi-Weapons are only 'one-shot' it's likely that a Marine Squad close enough to use one is going to get it's best results the first time it uses them rather than from multiple shots...not convinced?

Okay, lets take a Flamer as an example.

Your most likely to be in charge range when your using a Flamer which means that you'll be charging after using it as you don't want to be shot at and then charged by whatever it is your torching. First couple of turns will be spent getting into that position, anything that is squishy enough to be killed in a turn of assault won't need softening up anyway and anything larger or tougher will probably take a few turns to beat (or beat you) meaning your unit will probably be rendered ineffective for future combats regardless. The upshot of this is that you'll most likely only be using that Flamer once so the fact that you can only use it once isn't much of a hardship.

When using a Meltagun (or Combi-Melta) you'll find that it will inevitably (even when twin-linked) miss the one time you need it to work, lol. Having two obviously mitigates this problem somewhat and also helps out on those other occasions when a Melta weapon hits and then you roll double-one for damage...

Therefore the dual combi-weapon option is a great way of making a unit increasingly effective and enhancing it's duality substantially.

Like this,

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 230 pts)
   9 Tactical Squad @ 230 pts (Meltagun; Multi-melta; Rhino)
      1 Sergeant (Combi-Flamer x1; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

The only downside to this unit is getting hold of enough combi-weapons to actually model them, lol.

Though the above unit is probably what I would use, the use of combi's allows you a number of options that become viable in a Vulkan list due to the increased reliability bought about by twin-linking. Though I said at the beginning that I'd only take weapons that Vulkan could enhance there's always the option of combat squads to divide your Marine unit into a pair of effective ones.

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 230 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 230 pts (Meltagun; Missile Launcher; Rhino)
      1 Sergeant (Combi-Flamer x1; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Rhino (Searchlight; Smoke Launchers; Storm Bolter)

In the above configuration half the unit stays in the Rhino and goes off tank-hunting with it's pair of Melta weapons while still having the luxury of some anti-infantry fire-power. Meanwhile the Missile Launcher half camps on an objective taking pot-shots at light armour with it's Krak missiles. This unit mitigates an inherent problem sometimes encountered with Vulakn lists, namely lack of long range shooting.

My objections to Drop Pod lists have been stated previously but there's a 'Drop' list here if anybodies still interested.

I think that'll do for now. I'll try and get Fast Attack done slightly sooner than the two week gap between parts 2 and 3.....

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

E-Mail In : Vulkan Drop List.

This picture is completely relevant to the article.....Honestly.....

E-Mail In :

I read your first couple of articles on Vulkan and have enjoyed them a great deal (even though I've now been waiting nearly a fortnight for part 3, Hint, Hint.) but I was surprised that you don't rate Dreadnought Drop lists in conjunction with Vulkan. Any chance you could write me up a 2000 point one anyway?

Reply :

Apologies about the delay with part 3, I'll get that sorted in the next day or so. As for the Drop Dread list...I wasn't saying that they were rubbish, just that they were more easily counter-able than people think. That aside if you really want one then they're fairly simple to do and pretty much consist of Vulkan, a Master of the Forge and then you alternate between Tactical Squads and Dreadnoughts.

Like this in fact,

2000 Pts - Codex: Space Marines - Vulkan Drop Dreads

HQ: Forgefather Vulkan He'stan (1#, 190 pts)
   1 Forgefather Vulkan He'stan @ 190 pts
      1 Kesare's Mantle

HQ: Master of the Forge (1#, 100 pts)
1 Master of the Forge @ 100 pts
      1 Servo Harness

Elite: Dreadnought (2#, 150 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 150 pts (Heavy Flamer; Drop Pod)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Elite: Dreadnought (2#, 150 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 150 pts (Heavy Flamer; Drop Pod)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Elite: Dreadnought (2#, 150 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 150 pts (Heavy Flamer; Drop Pod)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Heavy Support: Dreadnought (2#, 150 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 150 pts (Heavy Flamer; Drop Pod)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Heavy Support: Dreadnought (2#, 150 pts)
1 Dreadnought @ 150 pts (Heavy Flamer; Drop Pod)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Meltagun; Multi-melta; Drop Pod)
      1 Sergeant (Bolt Pistol; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Meltagun; Multi-melta; Drop Pod)
      1 Sergeant (Bolt Pistol; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Meltagun; Multi-melta; Drop Pod)
      1 Sergeant (Bolt Pistol; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Troops: Tactical Squad (11#, 220 pts)
9 Tactical Squad @ 220 pts (Meltagun; Multi-melta; Drop Pod)
      1 Sergeant (Bolt Pistol; Combi-Meltagun x1)
1 Drop Pod (Drop Pod Assault)

Total Roster Cost: 1920

Tactical Squad configuration is somewhat subjective as there are times when a unit with a couple of Flamers might be preferable but that's up to you. The last 80 points can be spent on anything you damn well please but locator beacons on the first wave of Drop Pods are an obvious choice. If you plan on dropping the Master of the Forge's unit at the back as an objective holding unit then you could always give him a conversion beamer ;-)

You've got to be in it, to win it!

DYSTOPIAN WARS: Giant Robots, Giant Squids and Razor Sharp Teeth!

We know how much you all love big stompy robots. But what about gigantic steam punk robots that can fly, walk on the bottom of the sea (with telescopic legs) or ensnare whole ships with their metal tentacles?

Dystopian Wars succeeds again in not only bringing magnificent miniatures to the tabletop, but incorporating them into a wonderfully strategy game as well.

First up, we have the Federated States of America John Henry class Robots. You get 2 in a pack to provide some serious aerial intimidation for your opponents!

Then we have the Prussian Empire Metzger class Robot in both landand sea models. The land version is so massive that you only get 1 in the pack, but you get 2 in the sea wading (water-lined) pack. The Metzger walks along the ocean floor using its telescopic legs and is an unstoppable killing machine both on land and at sea. The miniature looks a real joy to paint too.

Finally, the Empire of the Blazing Sun Ika class Mechanical Squidconjures up images from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. The heavy armour allows this metal monstrosity to shrug off incoming fire before it slams into enemy ships and tears them apart with its tentacle mounted weapons.

Subtler, but just as deadly are the Kingdom of Britannia Vanguard class Submarines. Britannia trule rules the waves with these hull-wrecking beasts which saw enemy ships in half as they pass by with their razor sharp teeth!
DYSTOPIAN WARS: The Covenant of Antarctica

If giant robots, squads and saw toothed submarines wasn't enough to tempt you to play Dystopian Wars, we're overjoyed to announce a new faction in the best selling steam punk tabletop wargame.

The enigmatic Covenant of Antarctica is the world’s youngest and most unorthodox nation. Established in 1857 by the eccentric Britannian scientist-aristocrat Lord Barnabas Draynes Sturgeon, the Covenant has caused seismic shifts in global politics and scientific advancement in the few short years of its existence. The Covenent’s military forces are small, but thanks to their extraordinary grasp of technology, they command offensive power out of all proportion to their numbers.

The Covenant of Antarctica Naval Battle Group contains all manner of super-advanced battle ships crewed by artificial soldiers that perform at peak efficiency while harnessing deadly energy weapons the likes of which have never been seen before!

Meanwhile the walkers of Covenant of Antarctica Armoured Battle Group advance across the battlefield on enormous legs, crossing terrain with ease while blasting enemy formations apart with terrifying weapons. It's like playing War Of The Worlds!
FLAMES OF WAR: Reinforcements Have Arrived!

The best selling historical wargame of all time also receives new reinforcements with more infantry and tanks to bolster the armies of World War II.

Check out our Flames Of War Preorders section to see what the high command has made available to your general. Air craft, tank platoons, cannon batteries and even the good old Universal Carrier are all on their way to resupply and reinforce your armies.

Don't forget that we still have some Flames Of War Bags in stock! So get yours before someone else beats you to it.
Keep on wargaming!

House of Paincakes Article No. 34

Tuesday iHoP article can be found here,

This week the article will be bought to you by the delectable Jessica Alba,

As 'Max' in Dark Angel,

As Nancy in Sin City,

As Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four,

As Sartana in Machete,

Rather amusingly the 'no nudity' clause in Jessica Alba's contract meant that the nude scene was filmed with her in underwear and then computer graphics were used to make her appear naked.....seems like a lot of effort when the whole thing could have been accomplished by the simple method of her just actually being naked.....

Lol.

See you all next week ;-)

Sam Green's Death Guard

An acquaintance of mine who used to manage my FLGS has had his army featured on the Games workshop website. Admittedly they've spelt his name wrong...but you can't have everything I suppose...

As usual Games Workshop are a little behind the times as his army was featured on my blog fucking ages ago. Right here in fact ;-)

Their pictures are marginally better quality than mine though.....

Warhammer Forge Newsletter #13

Warhammer Forge Newsletter # 13

Hi there,
With auspicious timing, this week’s Warhammer Forge newsletter is heralded by the chittering of vermin and the scratching of needle-sharp claws as we unleash two new monsters upon the unsuspecting Old World: the Skaven Brood Horror and Exalted Vermin Lord. We attempted to send this newsletter yesterday, August 12th, but a strange horned shadow in the depths of the internet prevented us from doing so until today...
Skaven Exalted Vermin Lord
Skaven Exalted Vermin LordFew creatures in the Warhammer world are as horrific and unnatural as the so-called Vermin Lords. These incarnate icons of the Horned Rat are worshipped and feared in equal measure by the Skaven, for they are wiser and more wicked than any living Grey Seer. The Grey Lords themselves only summon these horrors at times of direst need, for they are loath to raise up what they cannot easily dismiss.
Epitomising the lithe, twitching paranoia of their smaller rat-kin in a way no natural creature should, the Exalted Vermin Lord is a cyclopean fiend of unnatural size and power. Crouched atop a ruined pillar etched with the scratch-script of the Underfolk, with chunks of warpstone and the runes of its summoning embedded into its loathsome, squamous hide, the Exalted Vermin Lord clutches an immense, gnarled Doom Glaive in one palsied claw.
Designed by Mark Bedford, this model is an amazingly detailed centrepiece for any Skaven army, and is available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing 30th August.
Using these experimental rules (a more printer firendly version can be found here), the warriors of the Under-Empire may be led into battle by this most potent incarnation of their foul god. As a Storm of Magic Binding Scroll, any Warhammer army may enter into a pact with this horror from beyond.
Skaven Brood Horror
Skaven Brood HorrorWhen the beastmasters of Clan Moulder spawn a pack of Giant Pox Rats, there is occasionally one among them who will brutally devour the rest of the brood, growing fat and bloated in both strength and savagery, the twisted forms of its kin still visible as they writhe and claw at their fleshy prison. The so-calledSkaven Brood Horrors are traded with the wealthier Skaven Clans for many thousands of slaves and warp-tokens for use as a war-mount by especially powerful or ostentatious Skaven warlords, or goaded into battle to flail and crush the foe beneath its clawed limbs.
The Skaven Brood Horror, designed by Trish Carden and Steve Whitehead, is a colossal, finely detailed, resin monster that is available to pre-order now for despatch in the week commencing 30th August. Its experimental rules (a more printer firendly version can be found here) can also be downloaded now, and included within them is a Storm of Magic Binding Scroll, allowing any Warhammer army to field a Skaven Brood Horror in a Storm of Magic game.

E-Mail In : Help with Chaos Daemons

E-Mail In :

Hey Gmort.

I'm a long time follower, first time writer, and also first time Daemons player. I'm working on a very heavily themed army that is built around a solid Fatecrusher core.

The list is
1850 Pts - Chaos Daemons Roster

Total Roster Cost: 1843

HQ: Fateweaver, Oracle of Tzeentch (1#, 333 pts)
1 Fateweaver, Oracle of Tzeentch, 333 pts

HQ: Bloodthirster (1#, 275 pts)
1 Bloodthirster, Unholy Might, Blessings of The Blood God 5

Elite: Bloodcrushers of Khorne (4#, 200 pts)
4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne, 1 Fury, 1 Icon, 1 Musician

Elite: Bloodcrushers of Khorne (4#, 200 pts)
4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne, 1 Fury, 1 Icon, 1 Musician

Troops: Plaguebearers of Nurgle (8#, 120 pts)
   8 Plaguebearers of Nurgle,

Troops: Plaguebearers of Nurgle (8#, 120 pts)
   8 Plaguebearers of Nurgle,

Troops: Pink Horrors of Tzeentch (5#, 100 pts)
4 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch, 1 Changeling, 1 Bolt

Troops: Pink Horrors of Tzeentch (5#, 95 pts)
5 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch, 1 Bolt

Heavy Support: Daemon Prince of Chaos (1#, 200 pts)
1 Daemon Prince of Chaos, Daemonic Flight, MoT, Bolt

Heavy Support: Daemon Prince of Chaos (1#, 200 pts)
1 Daemon Prince of Chaos, Daemonic Flight, MoT, Bolt

I know you recommend the Bolt Herald/Fiend combo, but personally, I'd like to try this first. I wanted to have a solid close combat force with the two units of crushers, Fateweaver and the Thirster, while still having a potent shooting element in the form of MSU horror squads with Bolt and the Bolt Princes, with the wings allowing the princes to pull double duty in CC, and have Plaguebeares to objective camp. My original version of this list had no Unholy Might on the Thirster, units of 6 crushers, one unit of horrors, and just general bells and whistles distribution.

My main questions are

1) Are the Crusher units big, scary and killy enough?
2) Do I have enough shooting to be useful? Or is it just unfocused?
3) Am I mobile enough? Would I be able to survive losing Fateweaver

Thanks!
Sean

Reply :

I'm not a massive fan of the 'Fateweaver Bubble' type of army as it is often fucked over by the stupid way Daemons are forced to deploy and the 33% of the time that you end up with the wrong wave. However if that's what you want to do I'll start with answering your specific questions and then look at the list ;-)

Q1) Are the Crusher units big, scary and killy enough?
A1) Four Bloodcrushers are plenty killy, however the likely-hood of you having four Bloodcrushers at the point at which you charge is optimistic at best I'm afraid to say. If your going to take Bloodcrusher units that you wan't to survive then you'll most likely need to go bigger. You can also save some points by dropping the upgrades as they don't really need them. The Rending from 'Fury of Khorne' will so rarely be useful that I never bother, 'Instrument' is unnecessary as you'll either win or won't and the Icons become irrelevant the 33% of the time that you get the incorrect wave.

Q2) Do I have enough shooting to be useful? Or is it just unfocused?
A2) In the current world of 5th Edition Mech (and I've no reason to believe that 6th will be any different) you need those Bolts of Change. My current Daemon list has seven which isn't much better than your five in principle but makes a big difference when your actually trying to dismantle a MSU mechanised gun-line, lol. Unfortunately 2 of your 'bolts' are only BS3 whereas all of mine are at least BS4. I'm not sure we can do much about that if you want to maintain your theme but we'll see if we can scrape together some spare points.

Q3) Am I mobile enough? Would I be able to survive losing Fateweaver
A3) Your lack of Cavalry/Beasts is going to severely impact on your mobility. The reason why 'cavalry' is so important in a Daemon army is that it allows you to drop in (relatively) safe areas which are hopefully outside of 'rapid-fire' ranges of certain units and still be able to charge on the next turn. None cavalry (or wingless, I suppose) units often have to take two turns of shooting before getting into combat or have to be extremely brave with their deep-strike locations which isn't a nice situation to be in.
Fateweaver is not far off a 5th of your points value and is only useful to units that are 6" away from him and dedicated assault units will still kick his ass. In an army designed around a single unit the loss of that single unit is universally bad.

Okay. I'm sorry if those answers are a bit disheartening but I'm afraid being a Daemon player can be a bit of a chore, lol.

Okay let's look at the list again then.

1850 Pts - Chaos Daemons Roster

Total Roster Cost: 1843

HQ: Fateweaver, Oracle of Tzeentch (1#, 333 pts)
1 Fateweaver, Oracle of Tzeentch, 333 pts

Obviously essential in a Fateweaver list but I'm not a fan. You will have games where he fails a Leadership test and runs off screaming like a little girl and you'll also often find that the unit you really wanted him to protect lands too far away to benefit from his re-roll range and promptly dies to torrents of fire on turn one.

HQ: Bloodthirster (1#, 275 pts)
1 Bloodthirster, Unholy Might, Blessings of The Blood God 5

Suffers from the same issue as all Monstrous Creatures do in the current competitive 'metagame' and that's a vulnerability to torrents of fire. At least he's fairly mobile with wings but keep him away from fearless hordes (or in the case of Orks 'pseudo' fearless) as the last thing you want is 275 points of your army stuck killing 3 Termagants a turn.

Elite: Bloodcrushers of Khorne (4#, 200 pts)
4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne, 1 Fury, 1 Icon, 1 Musician

Elite: Bloodcrushers of Khorne (4#, 200 pts)
4 Bloodcrushers of Khorne, 1 Fury, 1 Icon, 1 Musician

For the reasons discussed above, I'd drop all the upgrades as they're not essential. If you drop them all you can actually afford a 5th Bloodcrusher for the unit. If you've been following the blog for a while you'll know that I much prefer Fiends of Slaanesh in this role but if that's going to ruin your theme then you'll have to make do with the 'Crushers. Also, make sure to avoid Dreadnoughts ;-)

Troops: Plaguebearers of Nurgle (8#, 120 pts)
   8 Plaguebearers of Nurgle,

Troops: Plaguebearers of Nurgle (8#, 120 pts)

   8 Plaguebearers of Nurgle,

I'm guessing that these are your objective holding units. For that purpose I'd just take minimum sized units as they survive just fine sitting on an objective and going to ground whenever shot at. Assault units will kill eight without many issues so you might as well just have five and spend the extra points elsewhere. Alternatively split them into three units.

Troops: Pink Horrors of Tzeentch (5#, 100 pts)
4 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch, 1 Changeling, 1 Bolt

Troops: Pink Horrors of Tzeentch (5#, 95 pts)
5 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch, 1 Bolt

Being only BS 3 makes them unreliable 'Bolt' platforms and even a re-rollable 4+ inv. save won't keep them alive for very long. Use the Plaguebearers as your scoring units and use these points to get more reliable 'Bolt platforms' elsewhere.

Heavy Support: Daemon Prince of Chaos (1#, 200 pts)
1 Daemon Prince of Chaos, Daemonic Flight, MoT, Bolt

Heavy Support: Daemon Prince of Chaos (1#, 200 pts)
1 Daemon Prince of Chaos, Daemonic Flight, MoT, Bolt

Though I understand why you've given these 'Daemonic Flight' as the rest of your army is somewhat lacking in mobility I'm not sure it's entirely practical given the hefty price tag. The points you'd save by dropping it from both would nearly pay for a 3rd Daemon Prince.

I'm trying to avoid sounding overly negative but there's a number of very good reasons why successful Daemon lists have evolved into a very particular format.

Saying that, I hope I haven't put you off Chaos Daemons as it's nice to see people using an army that isn't Space Marines for a change ;-)

Thoughts and Comments are (as usual) most welcome.

House of Paincakes Article No. 33

Another Tuesday blog article. lets see if this one can beat the number of comments gained last week (It was one if I remember correctly, lol).

Article can be found here.

As there a have been some publicity shots released of the new Catwoman from the up and coming new Batman movie I thought I'd look at a few others who have worn the costume over the years.

I thought I'd go in reverse order for no immediately obvious reason.....

Julie Newmar.

She was also played by Eartha Kitt at some points during the show but I'm not going to bother with any pictures of her as she was fucking ugly.

Michelle Pfeiffer.

Halle Berry.

And now Anne Hathaway.

But for me she'll always look like this,

Or this,

But mostly this ;-)

Enjoy.
