Fantasy Team-Up: Adam Strange and ROM

TGIT!!!!!!

Well folks, here we are on the last day of Fantasy Team-Up week.
And for today, I'm going out on a high note with a special team-up that not only makes sense, but also one that should make a certain longtime friend and commenter to this blog very happy.

Shlomo, this is for you buddy.

Why would Shlomo be interested in this particular team-up? Why because it involves one of his favorite comic characters ever, ROM, the Spaceknight, as he teams up with Adam Strange, the human protector of his adopted home planet Rann.

So why would ROM and Adam Strange ever meet up, besides the fact that both of them hangout in space a lot?

Simple, because of these nasty fuckers, The Dire Wraiths.

In case you didn't know, the Dire Wraiths are life-long enemies of ROM's and basically all other forms of life in the universe, due to the fact that just like the alien Brood, they seek to conquer and consume all they can in order to continue to thrive.

The Dire Wraiths are very powerful since they're able to shape-shift, have super-strength, and in the case of the females of the species, also actively practice magic.
The Dire Wraiths get their shape-shifting abilities from being genetic offshoots of the Skrulls due to the Celestials experimentations, but shit, even the Skrulls don't want anything to do with them.

Now in my scenario, the Dire Wraiths are looking for a new home-world since their last one was destroyed after being banished to limbo by ROM.
Now this problem was solved in the main MU back in 2011, when the Annihilators restored Wraithworld in order to restore a cosmic balance with the universe.

Not so here.

Instead, the Dire Wraiths are still roaming the stars, looking for a hospitable planet to use as their new home.
This is where Adam Strange comes into play, because for some odd reason, it's HIS adopted planet Rann, that is chosen to become the new Wraithworld after its deemed fit enough to takeover.

The atmosphere of Rann seems to agree with the Wraiths' unique physiology and abilties, meeting all the conditions needed for the Wraiths to survive and thrive in this new world.

So to Rann they head.

Upon their arrival, they quickly access the situation and study the natives of their new intended home.

Its then after a period of a month of having laid low and bred enough new Wraiths from both natural means and from having taken and assimilated various native lifeforms, that the Wraiths make their presence known.

Sardath, Rann's resident genius scientist and father-in-law to Adam Strange, begins to notice signs and evidence of the Wraiths' arrival, and sets off to personally investigate, taking his lab assistant with him.

It doesn't too long for Sardath to find the Dire Wraiths new base of operations. After a quick fight, Sardath somehow is able to escape long enough to send out an emergency distress signal to Adam Strange before the Wraiths kill his assistant and capture him for further study.

After successfully probing Sardath's mind, the Wraiths gain all the knowledge and facts about Rann (Its strengths and weaknesses) they'll need to help them in completely conquering and taking over the planet.

It doesn't take them long to put that knowledge to bad use as they waste no time in killing and assimilating more and more Rannians.

All hope looks lost until a certain familiar red and white-garbed figure comes streaking through the Rannian sky, Rann's protector and champion, Adam Strange!

Adam Strange came as fast as he could, considering he has to wait for a certain day of the month for a zeta-beam to transport him from Earth to Rann.

Unfortunately when he does finally arrive, he arrives to a Rann that's already been constantly bombarded by daily attacks from the Dire Wraiths for the entire time it it took for the conditions to be right for Strange to get there.

After quickly accessing all the damage, he instantly thinks about his wife Alanna and wonders if she's okay.
Thankfully it doesn't take long for his worries to be assuaged upon seeing Alanna alive....

.....but not for long as she's being tirelessly pursued by some wraiths.

Adam manages to fight them off long enough to grab Alanna and fly away to a safer place.
She quickly fills him in on what's happened, how there's race of invading aliens hellbent on taking over Rann, and how her father's among the many missing Rannians.

In the days that follow, Adam Strange does all he can to combat the threat of the Dire Wraiths, but there's only so much one man can do.

Brought to the brink of utter exhaustion after fighting non-stop for days on end and on the verge of being killed, things look bleak for Adam Strange while in the middle of an intense battle with a horde of Dire Wraiths.

Just as it looks like they're going to gain the upper-hand and kill Strange, multiple blasts of ruby red death strike the horde of wraiths with lazer-like procession, eliminating all of them in a big blinding flash of light.

Another giant explosion follows near Strange, as a mysterious figure emerges from the spot where the wraiths once stood.....

It's ROM, the spaceknight, and he's arrived on Rann to help Strange combat the Dire Wraiths after intercepting Sardath's emergency distress signal.

Introductions are hastily made, and ROM's brought up to speed on all that's happened.

Now it's Adam Strange and ROM against a planet-full of angry, hostile, and desperate Dire Wraiths.

May whatever gods the Rannians serve help them all!

Shit, I maybe be biased here, but I'd definitely read this one. Probably have it be a two-parter or 3-issue mini-series to really get the most out of this team-up.

What do you guys think?

So, Who Would Win?: Star-Lord VS. Adam Strange

TGIF!!!!

Who's excited for Free Comic Book Day tomorrow? I know I am.

I can't wait to hit up my designated stops (only about 4 stores are doing FCD this year) and pick up some sweet, sweet SWAG in the form old back-issues and probably some new stuff, finishing up all the current issues of Gerald Way's Doom Patrol and Jeff Lemire's Moon Knight series. Those are really the only current series I bother reading or picking up when I do hit up a comic book shop these days.

I did pick up some nice SWAG already this week.
First up, on a trip to my local Wal-Mart I just happen to find this two-pack that didn't know was already available in my neck of the woods:

It's the new Ultimate Spider-Man/Ultimate Vulture 2-pack that's a Wal-mart exclusive.
I bought it mainly for the Vulture figure so that I can finally have one, since I already have waaay too many Spider-Man figures at this point. Oh well, what's one more, right Googum? ;)

Then I went ahead ordered the latest Cyclops and Colossus ML X-Men Warlock wave figures.

Sure I could wait and hopefully find them for their regular $19.99 price in the wild, or, or, I could get them now but pay almost double per figure, Yeah, impatient me, went with that last option. Hey, in my defense (as if I needed one) that new Jim Lee-style Cyclops is REALLY hard to find out there.
So yeah, took care of that problem.....

Picking up on the GoTG theme from yesterday, here's a fun match-up to think about; Peter Quill A.K.A. Star-Lord versus Adam Strange, A.K.A, you know, Adam Strange.

If you ever wondered how a fight between these two Earth-born spacemen would go, well.....I imagine, depending on the set up, it'd be a pretty good dust up actually.

Now both guys are just that; regular guys like you and me, with no special powers or abilities, just their wits and bravery.

They do sport some pretty cool space guns though, along with some pretty damn cool space gear.

Here's my made up reasoning for the fight.....

Okay, so the GoTG enter Adam's adopted home, the planet Rann, on one of their usual smuggling runs, looking for some special cosmic artifact for their employer. Adam Strange gets wind of this, and sets off to investigate, and apparently due to a mishap/miscommunication, Adam Strange, with the aid of the native fucked up weird creatures and animals, attacks the GoTG's ship, forcing them to crash. They survive, but now how to contend with said native weird creatures.

Star-Lord takes off to face the guy who seems to be behind all this, Adam Strange.

Annnnnnnd, GO!!!!

Star-Lord

VS.

 Adam Strange

Who wins and why?
Let me know who you think is the last spaceman standing.....

Hope where ever you are, if you can, go out and go celebrate and enjoy any FCD festivities going on near you.
Have a good one people....

Fantasy Team-Up: Adam Strange and Dr. Strange

TGIT!!!!!!

Closing out this week, with another edition of Fantasy Team-Up.

Today, I'm pairing two well-known superheroes with the same last name, Adam Strange and Dr. Strange, even though they couldn't be farthest from each other in terms of powers(Adam Strange has none) and genre; Adam's clearly a sci-fi guy, while the good doctor's a master mystic mage.

Stil, despite the major thematic differences between the two, they do share some similarities:

-They're both educated scholars; Adam studied Archaeology, while Stephen studied Medicine. I don't remeber if Adam ever got a doctorate in his field of study, but he had to have to in order to do all that diging and exploring ancient ruins like he used to. And we all know Doc Strange isn't just called that because it sounds good.

-Both were extremely influential upon their debut; Adam Strange helped usher in the then new wave of sci-fi pulp heroes in the 50's, while Dr. Strange helped revolutionize the comics' industry in the 60's, both with Marvel Comics, and with the artisitic and innovative inspiration of artist Steve Ditko.

-Both seem to be dedicated to only one love interest even after all these years: Adam has Alanna; Stephen had Clea(although she hasn't shown up in a long while, she seemed to be his main love interest for years with no other woman successfully taking her place).

-Both represent a different breed of hero/superhero for their respective eras.
-Both aren't really typical regular superheroes; Adam's mainly a non-powered champion/explorer/space cop for his adopted planet Rann, while Dr. Strange primary duty is to safeguard all of his Earth's reality from mystic invaders.

So while initially a pairing between these two would seem weird and out of place, I think given the right in-story reasoning and explanation, I don't see why these two guys couldn't team up and have an adventure. After all, hasn't that been the premise for successful team-up books in the past like Marvel Team-Up and The Brave and the Bold? Teaming up two or characters that wouldn't normally have anything to do with each other since they normally inhabit diferent genres and social circles?

Happens all the time, especially in the real world.

So what could and would, cause these two guys with the same last name but totally different thematic heroes to team-up?

I could toss a possible scenario or two in there to see how it'd work.

1). Since Adam Strange has to wait a certain amount of time and be a specific spot when the Zeta Beam show up to transport him back to the planet Rann, then have the beam malfunction, with Adam being stuck in between dimensions, which someone gets back to Doc Strange to help since someone or something tampered with the beam, causing Adam Strange to get stuck like he did.

Maybe Baron Mordo did it in hopes of traveling to Rann to conquer it with magic since it has such a science-driven planetary community.

2). Or maybe these weird and ancient evil sorcerrors from a past mystical age in Rann have returned to take their revenge and reclaim what they think is there's. Adam needs mystical help, and somehow knows to call Dr. Strange? Idk, but it sounds plausible enough.

And you definitely have to get a joke/reference to their sharing the same last name out of way. Just have to.

Candidates for a possible creative team?

Writers:
-JMS
-Mark Waid
-Nick Spencer/Kieron Gillen
-Kurt Busiek
-Roger Stern

Artists:
- Jesus Saiz (I loved his B&B run with JMS several years back)
-Darwyn Cooke/Dave Bullock( In place of Ditko who'd I have submit a page or a cover only)
-Paul Smith
-Alan Davis
- Pascal Ferry( He drew a previous 2005 Adam Strange mini that's worth reading)

What do you folks think? Would it work? Would it be a worthwhile story to read?
Let me know what you think in the comments' section.

Hope you guys and gals have a very good weekend......I'm outta' here.

"Closing time. You don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

Well..... I kinda always knew this day would come, and it sure has. It's been a hell of a ride, but it's time to for it end. Ti...
