Nyjer Feeder Birdcam

Male and Female Goldfinch

Goldfinches and House finch.

The goldfinches are starting to look more colorful this time of year. Like many birds, the male bird has more brilliant colors than the female. We put out the birdcam to photograph birds on the nyjer feeder. The bottom photo also got a house finch. It looks like we need to get a larger bird feeder.

Orange House Finch from Palm Springs

Orange House Finch

Orange House Finch

We didn't know house finches can be orange. Males can be orange, yellow or red. The color comes from pigments in the food they eat.

Birds at Feeders: House Finch and Hairy Woodpecker

 House Finch

Hairy Woodpecker

Hairy Woodpecker

The male house finch was looking so so colorful that we thought for a minute it might be a purple finch. A quick check of our bird guide showed he is the house finch at the nyjer feeder with a less colorful female.

The hairy woodpecker has not been around much this year. Today he came when the suet feeder was empty but found some crumbs. He may not have wanted his photo taken since he stuck his tongue out at us.

Common Backyard Birds in New Jersey in the Spring

Pine Siskin

The Pine Siskin is supposed to be here only for the winter. Their range is extending and they may stay. I hope they let the goldfinches have a turn at the thistle feeder.

Northern Cardinal
One female and two male cardinals have been frequenting this feeder. There appears to be quite a competition for her attention by the males.

Pine Siskin sharing the feeder with some finches

Pine Siskin and Goldfinch

Pine Siskin and house finch

Recently Mike has been talking about a smaller goldfinch at the nyjer feeder, and there has been a lot of traffic at this feeder. We received a newsletter from Colleen at Wild Bird Country yesterday talking about the pine siskins that are in the area. So, upon closer inspection, it looks like we've had pine siskins join the usual gang. In the top photo the pine siskin is sharing with a goldfinch. The bottom photo shows his tail feathers with a house finch.
