Birding in Mississippi: Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge

We went to Cleveland Mississippi this weekend to be with our dauaghter and son-in-law who were home shopping in the area. We took a morning off to go bird watching in Dahomey National Wildlife Refuge.

Brown-headed Cowbird

While out looking for warblers, we got this photo of a cowbird. Larger birds that stay still on the ground are much easier to photograph than small birds that fly around in the treetops.

Morning walk around Lake Nelson: Who needs Cape May?

We took our morning walk around Lake Nelson without the camera and binoculars. The day was so beautiful and the birds were all out, so we returned again with our birding gear to enjoy the migrating birds. There are many pairs of orioles, and we hope some will nest in the yard, perhaps enticed by the grape jelly Chris went out to get for them.

Brown-headed Cowbird

Did you know that a female cowbird makes no nest of her own? Instead she lays her eggs in the nests of other birds, who then raise the young cowbirds.
