Bobolinks at Hoffman Park, Union NJ

Bobolink (female)

Inspired by the reports of bobolinks and a few hours of nice weather, we took a trip to Hoffman Park in Union. Upon pulling into the park, we heard and then saw a male bobolink. We got some good looks and photos. We could have just turned around having accomplished our mission, but we stayed awhile longer and then encountered a few more bobolinks including a female. We also saw a cedar waxwing, a phoebe, a brown-headed cowbird and a yellow warbler (below).

Here are a few more photos from Dauphin Island. We've seen all of these in NJ, but it was great to see them all in one day.

Antigua: Yellow Warbler

Yellow Warbler
Most warblers spend the winter in the warmer climates and come north for the summers. This yellow warbler decided it wasn't worth coming back north. Sometimes, we think about staying in the Caribbean ourselves.

Birding Liberty State Park

We decided to try Liberty State Park for migrating Warblers. We are glad we did. The Scarlet Tanager was the highlight, but we also got a pretty good photo of the American Redstart and saw a Wilson's Warbler for the first time.

Yellow Warbler at the celery farm

Last year, we went to the Celery Farm in Allendale, NJ and saw a yellow warbler in a small tree among cattails. When we reached that tree today, we paused for a few seconds and a yellow warbler flew into the same tree.

Later another birder pointed out the yellow warbler's nest in a nearby tree.

When we stayed in Piermont, NY our B&B was close to the entrance of Tallman Mountain State Park. We took a brief walk and encountered a few birds. There was quite a bit of singing with the wren, the oriole, red-winged blackbirds and song sparrow competing for our attention.

The yellow warbler got our attention by its color not song.

Birds from the Celery Farm in Allendale

Yellow Warbler
We took a quick trip to the Celery Farm in Allendale, NJ. The yellow warbler was best photo that we got.

We spotted some wood ducks including what appeared to be an immature male just showing some adult colors.

we'd love to see some photos of the green heron family. Send them in (see "Click here to e-mail photo" on the right) and we'll post them. We have one (or more) that live nearby, but it's too skittish for a great photo and have never seen little ones.

Yellow Warbler from Tuckahoo

Yellow Warbler

Yellow Warbler

We took a long drive from Cape May to the Tuckahoo Wild Life Management area and just got some photos of one very small warbler: the yellow warbler. There was no waterfowl to be found. Mike thinks Chris should stop carrying on about all the things we didn't see because she got a nice picture of the swan in flight (and running on the water during take off).

I saw a Yellow Warbler today at the Overpeck Preserve in Bergen County. I had no idea what it was, since I am not a birder, but it was so beautiful it took my breath away. Thanks for helping me identify it.
