I closely watched the George Zimmerman trial play out. Trayvon Martin was not some innocent victim and George Zimmerman was almost railroaded for a murder he did not commit. I followed the news and the analysis of Andrew Branco and Legal Insurrection. It is critically important to know what happened in that matter.

Update:
The H8ers of George Zimmerman will continue to H8, but George Zimmerman is not a bad guy. He just ended up in a bad circumstance with Trayvon Martin. I feel sorry that Trayvon got killed, but almost entirely stems from Trayvon attacking Zimmerman.
What if George hadn't gotten out of that truck?

And in many cases that would be a good thing.

But sadly not always.

Selective Media Outrage...

Here is the good news:

An estimated 16,400 people were murdered in the United States in 2005, down from a peak of 21,400 a decade ago. Similarly, the number of black people slain dropped over the last 10 years, from 10,400 in 1995 to almost 8,000 in 2005.

Here is the bad news:

49% of murder victims in America are black men.  A very out of proportion number, given the black population of America is about 13%.  But 93% of those black men murdered are murdered by other black men.  "A majority of the black murder victims were relatively young — between 17 and 29."

So all this outrage about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman is nonsense (not that it was not serious, but it was just one case).  That is ignoring the real underlying problem. And guns, while the weapon of choice, are not the ultimate cause of the problem either (there has always been a lot of guns in America).  The fundamental problem is lack of male role models and father figures in the black community (which is also a problem, albeit to a lesser extent, in other racial groups, including whites).  

And as raised as a question at TOM, did Trayvon Martin's upbringing contribute to his death?

Will Eric Holder pursue civil rights charges against George Zimmerman?

Holder is thinking:  I could be the next Angela Corey...

Barack Obama had no problem describing Trayvon Martin as his surrogate son, but is strangely quiet*  after the verdict in the Zimmerman case.  Meanwhile there is outcry by the NAACP, Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton that the Obama Administration file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.  Harry Reid is even clamoring for it...

But the FBI already looked into this case and concluded there was no civil rights violations or evidence of racial motivation by Zimmerman.  Zimmerman was acquitted on all charges.  The trial showed the evidence was weak (at best) and there was no indication that race played a factor in the events when Trayvon Martin was shot (at least not from George Zimemrman's perspective). Crump's opinions are not evidence.

Holder is not the brightest guy out there, but he is shrewd enough to realize if he does pursue civil rights charges and loses, he will be the one blamed.  He is going to have to do something to appease the Democrat base, but how far does he push it?  Because Holder has been around long enough to know that Barack Obama has no problem throwing people under the bus...

Great News!  Not Guilty

The coverage by Andrew Branca at Legal Insurrection was wonderful.  Thank you so much Andrew for just spot on reporting.  I am glad the jury saw this correctly.  

I understand that many will disagree with this. Trayvon Martin is dead and they want someone to blame.  But 17 year olds do things they shouldn't and unfortunately this series of events led to his death.  I am sure if George Zimmerman could do it again, he would have walked the other way.  Probably Trayvon Martin if given a second chance would not have done what he did.  

But as far as the criminal proceeding goes, this was the correct result.

The jury decided to call it a night after a few hours of deliberation.  Here is a jury consultant with Megan Kelly on those who were picked.  I am impressed how little has been said about the jurors in the media.  But that also makes me nervous.  This is the one factor that, unless you are in the courtroom, you cannot assess at all.
