Marco Rubio makes the right decision on Rex Tillerson...

I did not see any upside for Marco Rubio to vote no, and apparently neither did Marco Rubio.  I doubt even Mitt Romney was lobbying against Rex Tillerson.

Smart move by Rubio. What does this possible protest vote do, endear Rubio to the all so powerful McMuffin-McPuffin wing of the GOP?  I am sure Schumer would be happy to use Little Marco again like he did during the Gang of Eight fiasco. That did not exactly work out well for Marco then. What makes him think that is a good idea now?

If Marco voted no on this, he might find himself abandoned as a GOP castaway on an island, without even his 'luxury' speedboat to escape on. No Senator wants to be an island.

I can understand Rex Tillerson not being Marco Rubio's first choice for Secretary of State, but President Trump gets to make this pick. To his credit, Rex Tillerson did display a certain degree of moxy I sort of liked.  Smart decision by Rubio to back off this ledge.

Instapundit: Not really a surprise,  Roger Simon: Rex Tillerson very impressive during hearings

Babalú Blog: Tillerson says Obama's Cuba policies will be reversed

Hot Air: Surprise: Marco Rubio votes yes on Tillerson

NRO: Tillerson is in like Flynn

EBL: Two Senators and a cup

Heat Street: Little Marco mocked for voting for Rex Tillerson after tough talk at hearing.  This was an unforced error on Rubio's part. What is the upside of doing this in the first place? Still, he did not double down on stupid by voting no after being abandoned by McCain and Graham.  So he has that going for him.

WARNING: You can never unsee this...

I doubt even that cup is big enough for the amount of crap out of these two...

Senator Rubio, remember how that Gang of Eight press conference turned out for you.  Don't make the same mistake again. Do you really want to join forces against Donald Trump with the media and the 'deep state'? Because Trump is winning that war. You do not have to throw in completely with Trump, but killing Rex Tillerson's chances in committee is not a hill to die on.

We all get Putin is bad. Guess what, so are some of China, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Cuba and Venezuela's leaders (and the list goes on).

If you have legitimate concerns about Rex Tillerson, why not quietly and directly present them to President Elect Trump?  After all, what you are engaged in is Advise and Consent.  I would try the advise part first (and sometimes a public hearing is not the best time to do that).

Tillerson was not my first choice, but then again, I am not President Elect. What I have heard so far in the hearings does not even remotely go to disqualification status for Tillerson. I would think you might even agree with this. While the Senate has the right to consent, there is something to be said about letting the President pick who he wants. And be careful the crowd you hang out with

You should pick and choose your battles more carefully.

Hot Air: Classic Rubio (what's the point)

The Crubio Dream Lives On, But It Was Never Real

How Does This Help Now?
Jake Tapper presumably has a good source...

Wallowing in what might have been does not help. I would have greatly preferred Cruz and Rubio as our presumptive nominees, but I doubt that unity ticket would have changed the primary outcome.

This was an unusual year and voters (on both sides) were looking for an outsider. The DNC was just more effective in blocking Crazy Socialist Sanders than the RNC was in blocking Trump. We are paying for past mistakes.

Ted Cruz unfortunately did not resinate with enough voters. While I still think Ted Cruz was the best candidate running (on policy) he is not a very good candidate on winning voters in a national race. Ted Cruz also burned way too many bridges on his path to the White House, which is why he is not the nominee. Ted lost allies he needed to block Trump's path.

The GOPe figured if we are likely to loose 2016, might as well lose with a one race shot like Trump than a conservative insurgent like Cruz. Of course, the establishment are divided.  Trump is not getting universal support from the GOP e either.

Cruz's attempt to appeal to the voters did not work. Not only did Ted Cruz fail to expand his base, he even managed to lose Evangelicals to Trump.

Of course, Marco Rubio severely damaged his brand prior to the race (ended up wasting resources battling with Jeb!) and was surprisingly glass jawed to a rough but predictable attack by Chris Christie.

Trump played on fear.  Okay, so do all candidates.  That is just one technique for winning.

Okay, this is a bit OTT (although it did make me laugh), but when you have to woo voters politics has always been about marketing and playing to your prospective audiences. Even when it was unseemly for candidates to run for office, they still ran for office through surrogates (think Ann Coulter and Hannity for Trump).

Joel Pollock actually makes a good point here. Cruz's New York Values comments hurt him badly in the New York primary.  That lack of momentum contributed to Cruz's crash going forward. With the momentum he had from Wisconsin, what could have been.

New York Values are what ultimately made the United States. Not the current New York political values (which are a mess and what Cruz was attacking Donald Trump for) but the free market entrepreneurial values of New Amsterdam which profoundly (and in a very good way) influenced the United States.

Instapundit: Why Trump Won, the slow blade penetrates the shield, they hate Trump but they fear Cruz, and where would Trump be if he ran as he actually is, the amnesty candidate?

Rush Limbaugh: Vicente Fox blasts Trump's Taco Bowl (I have to admit, while definitely not thrilled by this election, I am going to enjoy siting on the side lines and seeing Trump and his critics take pot shots at each other).

GOP Convention: What's one of the possibilities we might see in Cleveland this summer?

Which if attempted would be less Dr. Doolittle, more Dr. Moreau

Okay, where does the manure come out of that creature?  My guess, every orifice!

There is going to be lots of gamesmanship in Cleveland this summer.  With the unlikely prospect of Trump coming in with enough delegates to clinch on the first vote and Ted Cruz showing he is way more competent than Trump in lining up support with various state Republican delegates, Ted might very well prevail on the second or third ballot. Ted even managed to get Lindsay Graham to support him (sort of, although he thought a Kasich Rubio ticket was a good idea a few months ago).

Is Ted Cruz capable of beating Hillary Clinton (barring her being indicted, it is probably going to be Hillary)? Ted is never going to team up with Trump (and it wouldn't work even if he was tempted to do so).  Cruz and Fiorina? Cruz and Kasich

Things are definitely complicated. But don't count out the GOP Establishment to do what the GOP Establishment is apt to do.  Make things worse!

Ron Radosh at PJ Media and Myra Adams at NR are hot for a Kasich Rubio ticket.  I am just a wee bit skeptical it would work.

Instapundit: Oh oh: Kasich and Rubio supporters prefer Trump as second choice? and Kasich's biggest problem (beyond being John Kasich)

Marco Rubio: Is It Time To Go?

DRUDGE REPORT: Get out before Florida
#MarcoMentum: It can sneak up on you!

So much hope in the early campaign...

I was not happy with the whole Gang of Eight debacle, I still like Marco Rubio. I think he is mostly a solid conservative. He was very wrong about immigration and especially trying to cut a deal with Schumer and McCain. That cost him. It has doomed him in this cycle as much as Jeb was doomed. It is just taking a little longer for that to register.

You can survive this crash Marco...

I am sure Marco is not yet ready to concede it is time to go, but it may be time to go. Does he even want to wait for Michigan now, let alone Florida. I know Marco Rubio is hoping to best Trump in Florida, but if he doesn't what's the point of staying in? If Ted Cruz is the best shot at denying Donald Trump the nomination, shouldn't Marco help him do it?

Rebuild the Mach 5!

This whole contested convention idea? It's a crap shoot at best and a poor bet. Either Ted stops Trump at this point or he doesn't. Even if he wins Florida, that and Minnesota and Puerto Rico is not much Marcomentum. Marco Rubio is not going to join forces with Donald Trump (he does not want to be Trump's VP), so he might as well at this point help Ted Cruz.

RedState/streiff: Things could be worse! Glenn Reynolds noted this phenomenon last week. If Trump is the Creature, the GOP Establishment is Dr. Frankenstein. And this particular article is only partially right and very much wrong on illegal immigration. Spare me the complete and utter bullshit that opposing illegal immigration or President Obama's disastrous policies is somehow racist. In fact, it is the GOP and Democrats' embrace of illegal immigration (and the GOP's partial failure in fully resisting Obama's policies) that has brought us where we are.  Is Trump at 49%? I guess we find out tomorrow. Somehow, I doubt a unity ticket, but I have been surprised before this election cycle.

And Legal Insurrection asks, does the New York Times have a recording of Donald Trump on illegal immigration (that might not match his current rhetoric)? Well then the joke is on Trump supporters, isn't it? The New York Times should be careful what is wishes for.
