2v2 Batrep - The Danse Macabre

A storm was gathering above the planet Gerexus, making it hard to differentiate friend from foe. Many parties had previously fought over the bountiful rewards on offer, with few being able to claim absolute victory. As the walls of reality weakened, armies of the Imperium, wanderers of the Webway, newborn races, Traitor Legions, and denizens of the Warp all converged on the planet yet again. In the ensuing battle, none would be able to truly tell friend from foe....

Mork and I entered the 2v2 tournament held at Gamersaurus Rex over the weekend. We eventually settled on a combined Ynnari and Death Guard list. Much as I dislike the fluff behind it, soulburst brings a whole new way to punish lists which get an alpha strike in, while Mork's Death Guard added some resiliency for securing objectives.

The forces of the Danse Morkabre gathered.

Batrep: Tourney Prep Tyranids vs Ultramarines

Marsh and I met for our usual Monday gaming at Titan. 1850 tourney lists - no quarter given. The following is the result of our 3 hour timed game. The models are pretty much WYSIWYG except for a few.

Mission: Maelstorm + the Relic (15 points)

Ultramarines won the roll off to choose table sides
Tyranids won the roll for First Turn so I took it

Flyrant on the ground is actually on the 2nd floor as it fell.
LAN secured the building on my side while my Venomthropes kept out of LOS.

Used the bases to indicate my Flyrants location on the ruins. Spread the Gants out to prevent the Marines from dropping in
Unfortunately for me I rolled 3D6 and got a Perils of the Warp. I failed my Grounding Check and took 2 wounds from one Psychic Phase. It was also the Warlord. I was now on the ground and the Marines had a full turn to shoot at him.

I managed to score these 2 VPs

Marines drop right in for the Relic (the barrels) and supported the 2 units with the Bikes
The Marines moved up to secure the Relic. They also took out my Warlord, giving Marshall First Blood and Slay the Warlord.

Marines scored these 2 VPs
Turn 2
Tyrannocyte came in with the Toxicrene
I was expecting the Grav Centurions to come in to take out my Tervigon so spread the Gants further out to blanket my backfield. Some moved up to assist with the Relic.

I charged the Gants into the Marines in the hopes of tying them up
This was probably a mistake. I had Secure Objective 2 in my hand and the Gants were already sitting on Objective 2. The Space Marine bikes were right in front of the Gants but were 7" away. The Tactical Marines were 3" away. If I stuck to the plan, I would have been able to engage the Bikes and still secure Objective 2. Ahhhh hindsight.

Mid field

Tyranids didn't manage to score any VPs for Turn 2

The Centurions come in and takes out the Tervigon, wiping a big part of my backlines
The Tactical Squad up front had also charged my Gants forcing them to consolidate upwards. This was also the Squad that had the Relic. Interesting choice.

Worth noting at this point that I kept thinking the Relic was captured by the unit and was not dependent on placement. Marshall did point to the Marine that was capturing it but it did not register with me almost until the end.

Marines wipe out the unit of Gants that charged them
The 2 Stormtalons that came in managed to take out my other Flyrant. Here's where I made a mistake. After the first Storm Talon did 2 wounds, I should have Jinked for the 2nd one.

Marines scored another 2VPs
Turn 3
I was losing my Synapse network and quite quickly too. I had also made a big boo boo in Turn 2. I had the opportunity to discard a card so could have discarded Secure Objective 6 (which my Gants were caught in combat with the Tactical unit) but held onto to it.  I should have discarded Objective 6 since Tactical Marines are quite difficult to shift unless I really commit to taking them out. Lesson learnt.

In hindsight, I should have pulled the Hive Guard back onto the Skyfire Objective 4. Jinking would not have made a difference as I was on Ruins which conferred a 4+ cover anyway. I held onto Scour the Skies because I did not expect the Flyrant to die from one round of shooting.

While I managed to fail the Synapse check on the Toxicrene, I was still able to move it towards the Relic Tacticals
The rest of my army attempted to create a no mans land between the Relic and the Marines, isolating the Tactical Squad holding onto the Relic. It was worth 15 points hence I was keen to get it.

Toxicrene charges in to take out a few Marines

In desperation I charged these Gants in but lost 1 for my troubles

Failed to score any
Note to self:  In this game, I continually forgot to consider discarding cards as I was hard pressed by time and felt bad holding it up. However, I have the right to consider dropping the cards. I will not be pressured into making decisions from now and will remember to drop the cards that I will struggle to score.

In the combat I finally managed to kill off the Tactical unit holding the Relic

Stormtalons were in my deployment zone now

Marshall scored another 2
Turn 4
I now had the opportunity to grab the Relic and win the game. However, 3 hours was up and since we were playing under tourney conditions, it meant the game would be called at the end of Turn 3. I couldn't take Turn 4 hence could not capture the Relic. A real waste!

End game shots

End game shots 2
We tallied the VP's from the Maelstrom cards and Marshall clearly came out on top, scoring 9 to my 2. I was determined to win this game by going for the Relic but was beaten by time. Would it have made a difference? Considering the Marines still had a lot of firepower, Marshall could have targeted the unit with everything he had and forced my Termagant to drop the Relic. Would it have made more sense to put it on the Toxicrene? Yes, very likely with T6 and natural Stealth. However, I wanted to use the Toxicrene to charge the other Tactical Unit and get away from the Centurions in my back line. My original plan was to get the Relic back to my lines using the Termagants and within Venomthrope cover. Assuming they survived the ThunderFire Cannon, that would have been game.

Well hindsight is powerful! Now let's play this mission again but this time with my other list. Let's see how it does.

Tourney Prep: 1850 Tyranids vs Ultramarines

Marsh and Pat has suggested that I take part in the next 40k tournament. Now, those who have followed the blog for a long while, will know that I took part in Sporecon 2011 which actually marred the tournament experience for me. It was because I went in with the wrong expectations. I did not expect to see fully cheesed up lists and ridiculous combos. Granted, the boyz at ABO, we play efficient lists (with the exception of Sam), but the combos that I saw in 2011 blew us out of the water.

That said, forward to 2015. 4 years and the meta not only changed but ABO grew to include Marshall. He loves to game the system and brings hard lists.

He will be my sparring buddy for this series of tourney prep.

Just in: it seems that Marsh forgot to put the deposit for my entry fee and I cannot participate in the tourney. Nonetheless, the game I had yesterday was still very fun and engaging. Hope you guys enjoy it.

Mission:
Primary - following Maelstrom Mission and each player draws up to 3 cards at the start of his turn. Player may drop a card at the end of his turn. If there are objectives that is impossible to score (e.g. Demolitions and your opponent does not have Fortifications) you do not auto discard.
Secondary - Kill Points: each KP is worth 1VP at the end of the game.

The batrep has fewer photos as I was focusing on the game a bit more. Hopefully the recaps will help.

Standard DoW deployment
I brought the Living Artillery Node so took the largest ruin on my side. With 2 Venomthropes, this granted my Warriors and the Venomthrope a 2+ Cover Save. On the other side, I deployed the Tervigon with another Venomthrope for a 3+ Cover Save. I also had the First Turn unless Marsh could steal it.

I spread my Gants out across the table as I knew that Marsh had 3 Drop Pods waiting with Meltaguns and Plasma guns so I had to bubble wrap the LAN in the ruins. Space Marines have a tendency to drop under AP2 blast templates!

First turn to the Nids and I spread out the Gants with the Flyrants in the middle supporting a Turn 2 push
Nothing much happened in Turn 1 owing to being out of range. My Biovores tried but failed to wound anything. The Tervigon did not birth any babies as the KP game was on and I did not want to give out free KP.

Scored one Objective
I usually take pictures of the objectives but for this game I forgot. Will do it moving forward.

Ultramarines make the drop
Turn 1 saw 2 Drop Pods arriving. The Ultramarines focused majority of their fire on my large unit of Hormagants who dropped till only 6 remained. Then the heavy weapons took 4 wounds off my Tervigon. I now had to birth babies or risk losing everything.

Turn 2 and 3
Both of my pods came in
I sent one Tyrannocyte up to the forest to threaten the Devastators camping in the ruins and the other Tyrannocyte to my mid table. This would allow me to threaten a few units at the same time. Focusing all my shooting, I managed to kill off the Marines in the centre of the table to gain positional advantage again. I did however ignore the Drop Pod which will come and haunt me in the later stages of the game.

Small advance by the Marines in their Turn 2
I respond by Swooping my Flyrant up in their face. Knowing that I could get Catalyst off meant that I could weather at least one round of shooting from them. Also, Marsh had used up majority of his tactical doctrines by now. He was down to the Assault Doctrine.

Tyranid at the bottom of Turn 3
By the end of my Turn 3, I managed to thin the Warlord's bike unit down to 2 Bikes. I had also managed to destroy the unit of Devastators in the ruins with a charge from my Toxicrene. I had middle ground but did not realise that the Drop Pod in my backline was Obsec! I had 2 Objective Cards 1! It came back to haunt me! This was the mistake of the game for me.

In the Ultramarine turn, Marsh moved his Warlord unit up to take out my Tyrannocyte and the Hormagaunts. He was basically targetting small units to get the objective Supremacy.

Turn 4 and 5
Swooped my Flyrants back to my lines for Synapse and support
I brought my Flyrants back to my lines to take out the remaining Drop Pods and Marines. Also, I wanted to kill off the Ultramarine Warlord to get an extra KP and Slay the Warlord.

Game end
This was one of the most entertaining games I had in a long time. When 2 armies which are about equally matched with a balanced scenario that is loosely based off of the LVO ruleset, 40k becomes entertaining again. That said, we were both playing this in a competitive but friendly type of atmosphere, allowing each other to take back moves or make moves that they missed if it meant a tighter game (e.g. Gants running in the turn they missed it and they were in a corner).

We tallied up the objective cards and KP. Marshall scored 17 for the Ultramarines and I scored 20 for the Tyranids! I actually thought I had lost the game due to the Drop Pod stopping me from scoring 2 Objectives for 2 turns. Really goes to show you that it is important to keep your eyes on the prize and never give up.

I am looking forward to our next game.

Battle of the Brie: 1500pts of Cheese Harlequins/Eldar vs Space Wolves/Ultramarines

The Harlequins of the Masque of the Third Act had suffered greatly in the weeks since their exile from the Frozen Stars, having to fend off predation from both Dark Eldar of Elian Maiburiarch and Orks of Warboss Morgutz-Ear. Despite the unwanted attention, the Third Act had managed to keep the majority of their nascent Masque intact, and had even managed to acquire several gargantuan Wraithknight frames, as their family members from the Craftworlds had come to join them. The Troupe Master that had come to be known as the Willow Prince was glad for his family's company, they were what all the Third Act had rebelled against the Frozen Stars for. He watched the recently arrived Bonesingers working on the Wraithknight frames, musing on how far the Third Act had come. A crystalline chime stirred him from his thoughts. Intruders had neared an entrance to the webway....

1500 pts between Alan's combined Power Armour army and my Harlies with WK support. We both agreed to bring cheese lists so there was no quarter given.

Space Wolves/Ultramarines
1 x Rune Priest with Force Axe and Storm Shield
6 x Thunderwolf Cavalry with Storm Shields and 2 Power fists
Skyhammer Annihilation Force with Grav Cannons and Grav Amps
Grey Hunters with 2 Plasma guns, Drop Pod with Locator Beacon

Harlequins/Eldar
2 x Cegorach's Jest formations (Troupes with Caresses in Starweavers, Skyweavers, Voidweaver)
2 x Wraithknights (2 x Heavy Wraithcannons, 1 x Ghostglaive and Shield, 2 x Shuriken Cannons, 2x Scatter lasers)

The Masque of the Third Act

Harlequin Deployment, hiding from the Skyhammer

The view downfield, Thunderwolf Cavalry hiding from all the D attacks

The Skyhammer all set to enter
Alan hid his Wolves well, my Wraithknights could only see one. Which was promptly killed by a volley of Wraithcannon fire.
As the ruins of an ancient city received the first rays of dawn's early light, the Third Act positioned themselves to intercept the intruders. Sensors had shown that a mon-keigh vessel had entered low orbit, and long experience told the Willow Prince that an airborne assault would soon follow. The Wraithknights hid themselves in large ruins, while the Starweavers of the Masque also stayed out of sight. A strong smell of wet dog and mon-keigh alcohol wafted across the battlefield, and he saw movement in the ruins ahead. Battle would soon be joined...

I deploy everything in ruins to give myself 4+ cover against his Skyhammer grav cannons, in case he brings them in on the first turn. Alan's wolves were deployed out of LOS, but one could be seen through a window. Two heavy wraithcannon shots quickly took care of him. nothing else could be seen, so the Sword Wraithknight ran to get the charge in next turn.

This drop pod had a locator beacon, to bring in the Skyhammer without scatter.

Grey Hunters with bolters and plasma shoot...

... and wipe out the Voidweaver for first blood!
The Harlequins had taken some sacrificial casualties with little caused in return, thanks to the Space Marine assault. Nevertheless, the time was ripe to spring the ambush on the intruders, and the Willow Prince ordered his forces to engage. As one, Skyweavers and Starweavers swept forward, spraying the marines on the ground with shurikens and star bolas. With a covering volley of shuriken cannon fire, a Wraithknight charged into the Space Wolves' cavalry. Despite their vaunted courage, the elite warriors fled after losing two of their brethren. The remaining marines, seeing their support flee, voxed for reinforcements...

The Ghostglaive Wraithknight kills two Thunderwolves and the rest run off the board! Meanwhile, the Wraithcannon WK fails to destroy the locator beacon drop pod, which meant that the Skyhammer formation could come in without scatter next turn. Uh-oh.

Between the Ghostglaive and Stomps, the Thunderwolves have their tails between their legs, and hightail it off the board!

They prefer the comFURts of home...

Like a maniature meteor shower, three drop pods fell from the sky on tails of flame, marking the Ultramarines' response to the Space Wolves' calls for aid. The pods' doors fell open with resounding crashes, and blue-armoured marines poured out. Displaying their famed discipline and training, the Devastators poured their fire into the Wraithknight that had routed the Thunderwolves, bringing it down with a thunderous volley of grav cannon fire. Elsewhere on the battlefield, staccato explosions marked the death of another Voidweaver, with the recently arrived Assault Marines making short work of the lightly armoured vehicle...

Complete carnage when the Skyhammer formation comes in, with the Grav cannons killing off the Ghostglaive Wraithknight and taking a wound or two off the Wraithcannon one. The Assault Marines wreck the last Voidweaver. Skyweaver jetbikes still survive, but only till Alan's next shooting phase. Thankfully the Harlequin Troupes are still at full strength.

Down comes the Skyhammer
Assault marines prepare to charge the second Voidweaver

Grav wipes out a heroic Wraithknight, who absorbed 30 Grav shots with rerolls to wound and hit before dying!

The Assault Marines destroy the second Voidweaver and begin rioting!!!

Wrecked! Those are amazing LED markers btw, many thanks to TG

The Harlequin forces had suffered several blows, losing much of their heavy support to the Space Marine reinforcements, but they had the marines right where they wanted them. Like a maestro worthy of his title of Troupe Master, the Willow Prince had funneled the enemy into the centre of the city, and they were now in a killing zone. The remainder of the Masque swept into the Space Marines like a whirlwind, tearing apart several Devastators in sprays of gore. Onwards they fought, carving a bloody furrow into the massed human warriors, who were so slow as to appear statuesque next to the quicksilver Harlequins...

Harlies charge into combat and across several assault phases, wipe out most of the Devastators and Assault Marines, with little losses of their own. At this point, the greater mobility of the Troupes/Starweavers and the durability of the last remaining Wraithknight mean that Alan's pods and marines can't do much to take objectives and we call it. GG.

Look at those blazing flames! Don't look too closely; Harlies wipe out the marines that got distracted by the fire

Harlequins slaughter their way through the Power Armoured foe...

Endgame. All that's left for the Harlies are the Warlord, a Wraithknight, and two Starweavers. The Space Wolves have two drop pods and their dead...
The Third Act gathered up their fallen and wounded and began to retreat through the Webway portal. Though the humans had been repulsed, the nature of the defeat would surely bring numerous forces in retribution. It was a losing war, and as the last Harlequins walked through the shimmering portal, the Willow Prince regretfully set charges to destroy the entrance. The Third Act had been victorious, but at the cost of yet another world lost to the dwindling Eldar....

Post game thoughts: On another day this game could have been completely different. If Alan's Thunderwolves hadn't run off the board in the first turn. Extreme luck also played a part (making 20-25 4+ saves), helping me absorb most of the punishment from the Skyhammer. If the first Wraithknight had gone down in one volley, the other one would have had to bear the brunt of the Devastator shooting. The Skyhammer is really aptly named. We'll be having a rematch to test it again ;)
