2017 a hobby review.

Wow its been a year! And what a year it has been! CSM getting a reboot in the first quarter, and then 8th ed drops for Warhammer 40k!

I was just sorting out my photo album, well primarily trying to find photos to keep or delete and I was surprised what I have painted this year.

List of personal goals accomplished
1.)     Buy something ugly on ebay cheap, repaint it, and resell it!
The BEFORE photo, bought them off ebay at $0.70 each! #ultramarines #ebay
FINISHED as WHITE SCARS, and sold them off on #ebay and more importantly learnt a few techniques that I put to use on my #Deathguard.

2.) Complete an iron Painter challenge

IronPainter was a 24 hour painting challenge,  where you have to paint something in 24hours and present it at our local hobby store later on.

I managed to chart my progress on instagram which is also another big thing for me this year, as the lazy blogger in me, just preferred to snap a photo and upload it. Plus all the instant 'likes' can be gratifying.

Search for me! im 'hobbieswithmazz' on IG

and heres my squad of #DeathGuard legionnaires, completed at 2pm the next day.

In hindsight it was really good fun, though the lack of sleep was really painful. and trying to solve a clogged airbrush at 3am was also another memory that I dont wish to repeat.

2017 was also a year for Netflix! My companion through all the long nights huddled infront of my wet pallet.

I think I have watched everything!

One of the few good offshoots from the IronPainter Challenge, was that I was inspired to paint and build faster. I have a habit of painting 40k minis in parts and then assemble them together, which takes just too long. At least for a few months, I was painting the models fully assembled.

I've since gone back to my old ways though =p

My Good Deed for the year!
2 weekends after the ironpainter challenge, Melvin invited me to join him in painting Andrew's Marines. Andrew's a friend of ours who has hoards of unpainted marines and we took it upon ourselves to help him reduce some of his backlog. Probably the most generous thing I have done this year!

Andrew's Dark Angels all painted for him! Really happy with the 24hour paint job too!

My ork collection also received a minor boost this year, again inspired by the Iron Painters Challenge.

So I got off my butt and finished another group of orks. Figured in any list combination, I would be covered if i had at least 60+ boyz nicely painted ork boyz.

Boyz ready for the great waaargh of the 8th Edition!

Wierdboy converted from a Warhammer Fantasy Savage Orc, added the trophies to give it a more 40k feel =) and plus to commemorate a great day of gaming, (see Ray's post of DP's 1k tourney)
the Butt Shot. NSFW!!! Sorry couldnt resist this photo =)

and so here rounding off the year is the mandatory family portrait...

Man! have the Deathguard legion grown! #DeathGuard #legionXIV

and the great waaargh just got more awesome too!

CHEERS TO AN AWESOME 2018!

Batrep: Altansar vs World Eaters - The Curtain Draws Open

You Cai and I finally got to play our game. 1850 a side, YC would be bringing a 30k army using the Forgeworld ruleset. I crafted a short narrative capturing the dark work that the Eldar do in the background. The stage was set, let the battle begin!

The Curtain Draws Open
Farseer Turendas felt rather than see the the approach of the cloaked figure.

"It is time" said the shimmering figure.

"This is no mere mortal you tasked us to assassinate. He is a beast among their kind", replied Turendas. He had his suspicion that no matter his query, it would not change the outcome.

"You serve as others have before you. Morag-Heg has Her purpose", replied the fluid image.

"Then it is done" acknowledged Turendas.

He knew that the Harlequins broke no discussion when the decision has been made. Farseer gathered his Runes and Ghost Helm and sent out the message to gather the warhost. Altansar goes to war.

Pre-game
YC recently completed his Angron model and we were gearing up for our ABOcalypse in about 1 month. I set the narrative up as a battle that took place way before Angron was caught in the Heresy, back in 30k. This was after the Eldar failed to assassinate him when he was a child.

What is known is that Angron was discovered by a slaver who chanced upon the battered and bleeding figure of the young Primarch surrounded by scores of alien corpses, high in the northern Desh'elika Mountains. History does not record what species these aliens belonged to, but many Imperial scholars believe them to have been Eldar who attempted to kill the Primarch, due to some psychic foreknowledge of the plague upon the galaxy he would one day become. Angron had been badly wounded in the combat, but remained alive.

Now that the Primarach has reestablished contact with his Chapter, Angron was tasked by the Warmaster Horus to bring an outer-rim world to compliance. Upon completing this task and prior to departing to another system, the Eldar set a trap to isolate him from his main force and bring him to the ruined city of Brakenn V as the spearhead.

Eldar Revenant Titan WIP

Finally my Revenant Titan arrived! Breaking it out of the bags, I soaked it in dishwashing liquid and warm water, took an old toothbrush and cleaned the parts.

I felt like an archaeologist putting this together
Putting it together was quite a challenge initially. Knowing which parts went where took me awhile to figure out between looking at pictures and videos online. This is not an easy kit.

There were a lot of flashing so I took to it with vigour and in some parts may have damaged it a little so am going to have to grab a bottle of liquid greenstuff.

Slight over zealous shaving

Test fitted some of the larger components like the guns
With this kit, I suggest you work on it between smaller projects. I was painting my War Walkers while I was gluing this kit. It allows you to let the glue settle before coming back to it.

As I was building the model, I noticed that the legs just did not stay in place for long. A slight nudge and it all came apart. Whipped out my drill bit, a thick paper clip and voila.

Added a pin to the lower part of the limb

Painted the tip and dot the internal joint, ensuring a good fit

Jammed the pin in and it's done. Both sides ran flush to the knee cap
The next stage were the arms. I had pre-purchased a KR Multicase EL12 foam to house my Titan. This case will require me to keep the arms separate (which is good in the event I wanted to opt for the Sonic Lances). I needed to magnetize.

Trimmed off and flattened the joint

Added magnets into the sockets

Jammed the largest magnet I had into greenstuff

Smoothed the joints but not too concerned since it's all hidden in the gun.

Used greenstuff to help bond the legs to the lower chassis
The hardest part for me was the posing of this model mainly due to the heavy resin. It was also hard because each part affects the pose. For example, the torso and feet are going to be heavily influenced by the actual position of the legs. However, the legs are also heavily influenced by the torso and feet. So which comes first? Bluetack came to the rescue and I finally decided with the pose above.

Anyone have any clue what these parts are for?
I am letting most of the parts cure for the moment and will update once I move on to the next stage. I want to finish this model together with the Wraithknight and paint them simultaneously since I will be using the airbrush.

Targetting to get the base coats done with pre-shading.

I also found this resource to be extremely helpful. He has a very complete almost step by step guide to the project: http://oinksterrain.blogspot.co.uk/p/details.html

Imperial Knight vs New FW Lancer

FW always going bigger!
Been looking at a lot of beautiful pictures coming out of Forgeworld but this one caught my eye. Particularly due to the size comparison. I always had it in my head that the new Lancer would have been smaller but this picture disproves that! Hope you guys have great time modelling stuff this week!
