Gamestart: A Time of Legends Game 3

Scenario 3: Nexus Control
After the pairings were announced (on the app so no more screaming), I was pleasantly suprised that I would play with Lum.

Lum chose the following secondary missions
Headhunter
Mark for Death
Ground Control

I chose the following
Kingslayer: Castellan
Titan Slayers
Ground Control

His army was a simple and direct one, 2 Imperial Knights supported by one Castellan (with a Company Commander and 2 Psykers. It's the type of list my list was created to counter.

As deployment was narrow, I chose to deploy the Scouts hidden where possible while stacking one flank heavily. I knew I would struggle taking the Knights down so I needed to concentrate.

Mounted the DC in the SR prior to deployemtn
LOS blocking is critical as it allowed my smaller infantry models to move up rather untouched.

While Lum managed to win the roll off for Turn 1, I seized and took it. Slamguinus and Lemartes was in Deepstrike Reserves

Those Scouts in the ruins stood little chance

Destroyed the first Imperial Knight before moving on to take out the Castellan
I also managed to take out the Psyker

As the Castellan went down, the heroes all lined up to take down the last Knight

Unfortunately for Lum, this was a massacre. By this point he called the game as he would be tabled by the next turn. This game me a 30 point win.

Scores just for reference:
Primary: 20 Ray, 5 Lum
Secondary: 12 Ray, 5 Lum
Total: 32 Ray, 10 Lum

Again another fun game as Lum was quite relaxed. We both had small armies so the game went on really quickly.

At this point, the organizers tallied the scores and unfortunately I did not qualify. No surprises there to be fair as I needed more practice for sure. I finished 14 out of 28 players on Day 1 which is likely to the the placing by the end of the tournament.

Day 2 players are in the photo below and I wish them all the best!

40k Tournament Report: Gamersaurus Rex 2015 Invitational Qualifiers 2015

Those who have been following the blog would have noticed that I have been practicing and preparing my Tyranids for an upcoming tournament. I have been a bit cagey giving out too much information regarding my list and my opponents' army lists for fear of revealing too much to my potential opponents prior to the tourney. Now that it is over, here is the full blown list!

This is my 1850 Tyranids list:
Hive Tyrant: Wings, Twin Linked Brain Leech Devourers
Hive Tyrant: Wings, Twin Linked Brain Leech Devourers
Hive Guard x3
Hive Guard x2
Hormagaunts x24
Termagants x15
Termagants x20
Termagants x30
Tervigon
Tyranid Warriors: Devourers x3
Carnifex: Twin Linked Brain Leech Devourers
Carnifex: Twin Linked Brain Leech Devourers
Tyrannocyte: Deathspitters
Tyrannocyte: Deathspitters

The original list contained the Living Artillery Node but after playing with the boys during practice matches and based on how the games went, I changed the list to improve it's ability to hold objectives. Pat was the one who suggested that if I wanted an objective grabbing army, it has to have all 6 Troop choices full.

Apocalypse: Imperials vs Tyranids (With over 18,000 points)

The guys and myself got together and made our way to Teck Ghee for the SOGCon, the Singapore Open Gaming Convention. We put together 3 major forces, first being a coalition of 3 Tyranid players, the second an Imperial force and the third a Dark Eldar Raiding Party. The following are mostly pictures and a few highlights from my perspective. Hope you enjoy it!

Imperials wanted to go first badly and bid 2 mintues for Deployment. Knowing that we wanted to go 2nd, the Tyranids bid for 1,000 minutes for deployment forcing Imperials to deploy first. Dark Eldar would not come on the table until Turn 2. They also had a sinister purpose as set by Marshall, our Apoc TO.

Sam and I deployed most of our army towards the left side of the table as most of the objectives were on the left flank
Rico was away and would only arrive Turn 2 onwards as Reserves. This was to balance Melvin who would also come in on Turn 2.

Turn 1 opened with fanfare. A Dreadclaw dropped from the skies with Angron sitting inside. Imperials used their No Scatter Strategic Card allowing their Deep Striking units pin point accuracy on arrival.

Tyrannoctyes came crashing in

In the Tyranid turn, we turned around to attempt to open up the Dreadclaw and get to its soft centre.

I sent the Flyrants on the right flank to help alleviate some pressure
In hindsight, I should have just left the right flank alone. The Marines did not have the mobility to redeploy and since most of the objectives were on the left flank, supporting the left flank would have helped the Tyranids more in the early game.

Tyranids managed to destroy and take some wounds off Angron so we charged a lone Fex in hoping to kill the close combat monster. In return, Angron took out the Fex in one simple hit. OUCH!
At the end of Turn 1, Nids scored 3 VPs while Imperials scored 4VPs (1 from killing the Tyranid Warlord - a very lucky scatter with the D weapon!)

Turn 2 saw the arrival of the Dark Eldar. Alan who was controlling them saw fit to assist the Tyranids for his own nefarious reasons but Henry who played the Marines whipped out his Shield Array! This prevented the Dark Eldar from targetting Henry's Land Raiders, thus forcing the Dark Eldar to shoot at my Nids instead. Thankfully, not too many gribblies were harmed in the batrep.

All the Tyrannocytes came in to support the middle ground where all the objectives were at

The Reaver Titan makes it's presence felt.

A quick view down the table

Imperial Knights advanced down the left flank while we struggled to hold onto the objective

Then a Stormtrooper came by so I snapped a photo with her.

Just how 40k should look like, all painted to a stunning quality!

Our Titans appear to take the fight to their Titan

Pacific Rim!

We had the help of a Harridan too!

360 deg vision is very important to the Nids!

At the end of Turn 2, the Tyranids used 1 VP for Orbital Bombardment (-1VP), killed the Imperial Warlord to gain 1VP, gain 1 VP for killing an Imperial Knight and captured 4 objectives (4x2points=8 points) for a total of 9VP's this turn.

The Imperials scored 1VP for killing the Barbed Heirodule and another 4 VPs for 2 Objectives. This gave them a total of 5VPs this turn.

Total VP count:
Nids: 9+3=12VP
Imps: 4+5=9VP

The Nids were eeking a small lead but had lost quite a lot of their hard hitting units to Angron and a few lucky D shots. How will we continue to hold onto this lead or lose it to a overwhelming Imperial push?

Subterranean Swarm emerged to take the fight on the left flank

While my Tyrannoctye manage to hold onto that centre objective

The Dark Eldar move up to capture more slaves while my Flyrants kept popping Marine tanks

Mortal combat!
In the Imperial Turn 3, YC's Castigator Knight and Henry's 10 man Thunder Hammer Storm Shield Terminators threw themselves into combat with the formidable Bio Titan. The Bio Titan slashed and disposed of the Castigator while the Terminators surprisingly stayed around, losing none of their number. The Bio Titan took 3 damage from the Terminators.

Henry disembarked his men to try to shoot the Flyrants out of the skies but failed to wound

As the Harridan cast a wide shadow on our lines, it shot and damaged the Reaver Titan again

We threw 2 Bio Titans to attempt to damage the Reaver Titan

Land Raider Formation moving up from the right.

Harlequins moving in to support their cousins the Dark Eldar

Really odd that the Imperials didn't kill these two who were holding onto the objective

Charles sent his Dreadknight up into the middle to block the Tyranid avalanche of points we were scoring per turn
Unfortunately, the Tyranids seem to be able to get away with securing multiple objectives. As this was Turn 3, that meant a 3 Times Multiplier:

Tyranids: +1 for killing the Cerastus Knight and 12 points from the 4 Objectives.
Imperials: +6 from 2 Objectives

Total VP:
Nids 12+13 = 25VP
Imps 9+6 = 15VP

Moving into Turn 4 which would likely by the final turn owing to time limitations (looking at you, YC!), the we made our decision to bite the bullet and go for the jugular.

Our midfield had very little left and one Zoanthrope holding the Synapse.

Dark Eldar moving in for the kill
Alan who played Dark Eldar had a truce with the Tyranids! Looked like he preferred Marine parts to tentacles!

Our Bio Titan was fighting to break free of those Terminators and bring the fight to the Reaver Titan.

I sent all 3 Flyrants to the Imperial backlines and took out the Sicaran which was seated on an Objective

While the Dark Eldar gave chase to my Malanthrope who quickly ran up!
Rico moved the Harridan to attempt to kill the Reaver who was now limping on 4 Hull Points remaining! Would he be able to do it?

Imperials opened up on our middle lines, wiping them all out!

Our Bio Titan was stuck in pointless melee

And Charles' Dreadknight was capping this objective!

Money Shot right here
With Melvin looking, Rico managed to blast through the Reaver's hulls and breached the internal systems! The Reaver Titan was destroyed, creating a megaton crater and taking a hull point off the Fellblade next to it.

We made the tally and the final count was:

Tyranids: Reaver Titan kill +1, 4 Objectives for +16 = 17VP's
Imperials: 2 Objectives for +8 = 8VPs

Total score for the Apoc:
Tyranids: 42 VPs
Imperials: 23 VPs

It was an overwhelming victory for the Tyranids (looks like our sneaky bribe to the Dark Eldar worked buahahhahahhaa).

Post Game Thoughts:
I felt that the initial opening salvo was very tough for the Tyranids. Without our Bio Titan support in Turn 1, we were taking massive casualties early game. Compound that with a lucky D-blast deviation, we lost our Supreme Warlord (who was ensconced in a Tyrant Guard unit as well!).

It was a glorious day when the 2 Bio Titans appeared to take the fight back to the Imperials. The opening salvo saw 4 Void Shields and 4 Hull Points stripped off the behemoth only to have 3 Shields regenerate in Turn 3. Once the Cerastus Knight and Terminators charged the Bio Titan I thought it was over for the Nids. But amazingly, not only did the Bio Titan survive, it destroyed the Cerastus in one sweep of it's claw and held up it's own against the Terminators. Seeing how the Terminators could hold up against a behemoth such as the Bio Titan also made me find new respect for them.

We were also lucky that the Dark Eldar and their brethren appeared to make things complicated (in a good way!). I was afraid that Alan would start targeting the Flyrants who were making their way up the right flank but the Coke bribe must have worked like a charm. He took to Henry's Marines and started pulling Henry away from the centre. The sideline banter was good and quickly rushed my Flyrants behind Imperial lines.

This game was also impressive because each and every one of the gamers who came put on a really good show. With public streaming in during the event, it was important that we showcase a good game. Each mini was painted. NOT A SINGLE UNPAINTED THING! Most had put a lot of effort and last ditch bursts to beautify their armies for this showcase. I am really impressed and hope we continue to push this level of hobby forward.

Finally, my thanks to the Players (Charles, YC, Melvin, Henry for the Imperials; Rico, Sam and myself for the Tyranids; Alan for Dark Eldar; and Marshall for helping with the Rules), their families for allowing them to take time off and to all the organizers for putting on such a great show. I wish we were able to start earlier and clock more turns but this is the best Apoc game I have yet had! I am looking forward to the next and indeed have begun planning with the ABO Crew. Stay tuned!

Apocalypse: Shield of Baal Exterminatus

After 7 weeks of hard campaigning and both sides have their rewards for their factions, it was time for the finale. I would also like to thank Titan Games for being excellent hosts, being supportive by dedicating a place for us to play and giving us participation prizes.

Shout-out goes out to all the players who participated and continued in the drive to secure the Baal System.

This time it would be something different. Rather than just using the apocalypse ruleset and win conditions, we would be using the 8th scenario from the Shield of Baal Exterminatus. These were the forces that partook in the grand battle of Tartoros: Fallen Hope.

Tyranids brought a total of 9,000 points of gribllies including a BioTitan (Alien Queen)

The Alliance of Imperials and Necrons used their 600 extra points to purchase massive structures and Imperial Knights
Based on the scenario, the Tyranids had to deploy first and the Imperials would go first. The mission was simple, secure the objective sitting in the middle of the Tyranid table.

Shield of Baal - Apocalypse

After 6 weeks of campaigning, each faction scored bonuses for the final game which took place yesterday at Titan Games. Props to them for supporting this campaign, providing us not only a dedicated place to play but supplying us with food and even sponsoring the prizes at the end!

As for the players, each player contributed to the greater fight by taking on opponents on the opposing faction and scoring bonuses which helped in the Apocalypse.

Fresh off the disastrous Week 2 where the Imperium forces were forced into a massive rout by the Hivefleet Leviathan, remnants of the 43rd Vallorians have pulled back into the city of Asphodex to consolidate our defences and try to stem this tide called Hivefleet Leviathan.

Rule Clarification - D Weapons and Look Out Sir

Skytyrant vs Imperial Knight
So there was a confusion yesterday over D Weapons and Look Out Sir. I was playing the Skytyrant Swarm and Pat charged in his Imperial Knight.

The question: When the Tyranid player chooses to do Look Out Sir, do the extra wounds caused by the Imperial Knight's D Weapon carry over?
