2017 a hobby review.

Wow its been a year! And what a year it has been! CSM getting a reboot in the first quarter, and then 8th ed drops for Warhammer 40k!

I was just sorting out my photo album, well primarily trying to find photos to keep or delete and I was surprised what I have painted this year.

List of personal goals accomplished
1.)     Buy something ugly on ebay cheap, repaint it, and resell it!
The BEFORE photo, bought them off ebay at $0.70 each! #ultramarines #ebay
FINISHED as WHITE SCARS, and sold them off on #ebay and more importantly learnt a few techniques that I put to use on my #Deathguard.

2.) Complete an iron Painter challenge

IronPainter was a 24 hour painting challenge,  where you have to paint something in 24hours and present it at our local hobby store later on.

I managed to chart my progress on instagram which is also another big thing for me this year, as the lazy blogger in me, just preferred to snap a photo and upload it. Plus all the instant 'likes' can be gratifying.

Search for me! im 'hobbieswithmazz' on IG

and heres my squad of #DeathGuard legionnaires, completed at 2pm the next day.

In hindsight it was really good fun, though the lack of sleep was really painful. and trying to solve a clogged airbrush at 3am was also another memory that I dont wish to repeat.

2017 was also a year for Netflix! My companion through all the long nights huddled infront of my wet pallet.

I think I have watched everything!

One of the few good offshoots from the IronPainter Challenge, was that I was inspired to paint and build faster. I have a habit of painting 40k minis in parts and then assemble them together, which takes just too long. At least for a few months, I was painting the models fully assembled.

I've since gone back to my old ways though =p

My Good Deed for the year!
2 weekends after the ironpainter challenge, Melvin invited me to join him in painting Andrew's Marines. Andrew's a friend of ours who has hoards of unpainted marines and we took it upon ourselves to help him reduce some of his backlog. Probably the most generous thing I have done this year!

Andrew's Dark Angels all painted for him! Really happy with the 24hour paint job too!

My ork collection also received a minor boost this year, again inspired by the Iron Painters Challenge.

So I got off my butt and finished another group of orks. Figured in any list combination, I would be covered if i had at least 60+ boyz nicely painted ork boyz.

Boyz ready for the great waaargh of the 8th Edition!

Wierdboy converted from a Warhammer Fantasy Savage Orc, added the trophies to give it a more 40k feel =) and plus to commemorate a great day of gaming, (see Ray's post of DP's 1k tourney)
the Butt Shot. NSFW!!! Sorry couldnt resist this photo =)

and so here rounding off the year is the mandatory family portrait...

Man! have the Deathguard legion grown! #DeathGuard #legionXIV

and the great waaargh just got more awesome too!

CHEERS TO AN AWESOME 2018!

Quickrep: Blood Angels vs Orks

With the Blood Angel codex out for the 8th edition and a boat load of my old minis not having seen much action, Raymond Nguan and myself hit the table at Dueller's Point to get a 1000 point game in. Using the ITC ruleset and scenario, we played Capture and Control.

I wanted to try out the following list:
  • Lemartes
  • Sanguinary Priest
  • 15 Death Company all armed with Chain Sword and Bolt Pistols
  • 3 Aggressors with Storm Gauntlets and Grenade Launchers (still building so was proxied by Terminators)
  • 5 Devastators all armed with Lascannons
  • 5 Tactical Marines with Heavy Flamer and Bolters
  • 5 Tactical Marines with Heavy Flamer and Bolters
My opponent brought
  • 3 units of 30 Slugga Orks
  • 3 Shamans
  • Shield Ork
  • Painboy
A very straightforward list, and away we go!

Deployment

That's a massive horde
Turn 1 was probably where I made a huge mistake. I was not aware that the Aggressors can shoot twice if they didn't move! Worse still, the Orks had the first turn and deploying them so far out allowed the Shaman to take one of them out. Ouch!

Death Company arrives
Dropping them right behind the Ork lines was a good idea until I realise that the trade off was not that good. Granted I did manage to take out the characters, in return it allowed the Orks to pile in and take the unit out.
Bottom of Turn 2
The Orks made into my lines and I had little to hit back. Also, not reading the Objectives properly cost me 1 VP as I needed to kill off 3 units, not 2. At Turn 3, I called it and the Baalites returned to their Thunderhawks.

Key changes coming. Will be experimenting with the following:

  1. Replacing the Tacticals with more Sniper Scouts for backline objective holding
  2. Decreasing the Death Company to 10
  3. Shotgun Scouts

Hobby Corner: Opening up the deff dread hatch

Hobby Corner update 7/3/16: open hatch ork deff dread

new to the ork faction this month, is the new starter box 'pain mob' formation. I cant wait to test it out!. On paper, it does look like GW's best gift to orks in a long time.

But first I need to get them all assembled...

Flipping through the instruction sheet unlike the newer models like the new Tau Shadow Ghostkeel, the deff dred's all buttoned up. That wont do... cos  ‘sum kommanders have a better view of da battlefield with da hatch open!’

Photo 1:

Cutting the hatch open

Step 1 & 2: Using a pin drill that I got from daiso, size doesn’t really matter, drill a ring of holes on the inside circumference of the hatch that you would like to cut open.
Step 3: Then using a plastic clipper, cut the bit between each hole linking up all the holes, then with a sharp box cutter, carefully trim away the excess material, til you have a nice clean circular hole. Hatch opened!

Photo 2 making the hatch
Top left Photo: I traced out the hole onto a piece of tissue
Top right Photo:Which I then whiteglued onto a piece of polystyrene sheet and then cut out with a sharp scissors
*in hindsight,  perhaps tracing out a true circle (ie a coin) might have made a more symmetrical looking hatch.
Bottom left Photo:Then I decorated the inside of the hatch with some of my ususal watch gear bits to create the hatch locking mechanism and then some plastic bits outside to create something visually interesting,
Bottomr right photo: I then scored a line across and bent the little tab at the bottom of the circular hatch which I then glued onto the hull.

Complete!

Batrep: 1500 Orks vs Blood Angels

Tourney prep in full swing. This time against Marshall and his Orks (with a few proxies)

3 Battlewagons, 1 Trukk, 1 Divebomma, 2 Copters and about 60 Boyz
My list was modified to test Mephiston again. I swapped out some Tactical Marines for Scouts and removed the upgrades on my Death Company. I also swapped out the Melta weapons on two of the Tactical units to Grav to allow this list better handle Wraithknights.

Primer done on the Tacticals and Priest.
Modified this list by including Scouts with Mephiston. They will be his extra wounds! LOL!

Hyper aggressive first turn
It was a Cleanse and Control Maelstrom mission. I went straight for the guts and stopped the Orks by sending my Pods into his backlines. That would open the Battlewagons and hopefully allow my units to do the mop up or kite.

Surprisingly it was the Gravguns that blew up the silver Battlewagon (proxy)

Spews out
Unfortunately for Marshall, I managed to roll 12 for my Death Company charge and managed to get them into combat. The ensuing combat saw the unit get destroyed.

Quick return fire

Tacticals were toast and running back to safety
The Orks hit back hard and wiped the Tactical units out forcing me to fall back.

In Turn 2 I sent in the Meltacide Assault Squad to attempt to open the other Battlewagon

Stormraven comes in to assist in taking out more Orks

Boyz managed to charge and kill off one biker
Marshall was reminding me that I was way too aggressive with my bikers. Will have to remember to dial it back a little

While another bunch of Boyz charge into my Tacs

There was some mulling at the garage

Man that Ork Bomba really hit hard. That bomb AP3 destroyed 2 Pods and a Tac Squad

Brought my Stormraven over to support this push
In a bid to try Wings of Sanguinus, I casted it on Mephiston only to read the text to find out that I cannot charge after using it. WTF.com

And was killed by Nobs with Power Claws
I am finding that Mephiston is kinda crappy without his Iron Halo.

The Bomba came back in but majority of the Orks were gone

There was little left
The game was basically won by the Blood Angels at the 2 hour mark but lost at Turn 7. Oddly enough I can't remember how I lost. LOL! Selective memory.

Went home and broke open the box below.

The astute of you will notice that I had the Sanguinary Guard completed for the game with Alan and may be wondering did I go back in time? LOL! It's because this post was prepared before the game with Alan but I failed to upload it in time! Sorry for the confusion!

So basically after this game with Orks, I tweaked my list to include the Sanguinary Guard and dropped Mephiston. Apologies for the confusion!
