Canada Household debt hits record high
Credit cards are displayed in Montreal on December 12, 2012. A sustained period of low interest rates has allowed Canadians to rack up record levels of debt which, along with tumbling oil prices, pose a threat to the country's financial stability, economists say. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan Remiorz |
The total amount of credit market debt — which includes mortgages, non-mortgage loans and consumer credit — held by Canadian households hit a record high in the third quarter, climbing to 162.6 per cent of disposable income from a revised 161.5 per cent in the second quarter.
That means Canadians owed about $1.63 for every dollar of disposable income, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.
“The Bank of Canada has a lot on its plate in terms of assessing risk to the Canadian economy,” Leslie Preston, an economist at TD Economics, said in a note.

The Los Angeles Lakers star passed Michael Jordan for third on the NBA’s career scoring list Sunday night in a 100-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Bryant entered the game needing nine points to pass the icon with whom he is often compared. He got the mark with two free throws with 5:24 to play in the second quarter.
“I’m just honoured to be here, man, to still be playing,” Bryant said. “I appreciate being able to play this long. Careers normally don’t last this long. I really appreciate the opportunity to still be out there playing and performing and doing what I do.”
Now only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone have scored more points than Bryant.

RIP! World record holding two-faced cat dies at the age of 15
ADAM WITHNAL | INdependent
The world’s oldest two-faced cat has died of cancer, after defying veterinary science to reach the ripe old age of 15.
Named Frank and Louie – or “Frankenlouie” for short – the animal was declared the longest-surviving two-faced cat on the planet when he was entered into the 2012 edition of Guinness World Records.
Born with three eyes, two noses and two mouths, Frank and Louie belonged to a group known as Janus cats, named after the Roman god.
Janus cats suffer from a rare congenital disorder known as craniofacial duplication, the result of hyperactivity from the protein that governs facial development in foetuses. They almost never survive, usually through difficulties with the development of the oesophagus.
Speaking to the Telegram of Worcester in Massachusetts, Frank and Louie’s owner Martha Stevens said he was put down after his condition deteriorated over Thanksgiving.

Lady Gaga Reveals She Was Raped at 19 by a Record Producer
According to Lady Gaga while speaking on the Howard Stern show, her attacker was 20 years older than her and he was a record producer. She also states that she went through emotional therapy to recover from the event.
The singer, who appeared on Howard Stern’s radio show, made the claim after the host asked her about the meaning of her song “Swine.”
Howard Stern mentioned that the song alluded to a sexual assault, he then asked if she’d been raped by a record producer.
Lady Gaga replied: “I went through some horrific things that I’m able to laugh [at] now, because I’ve gone through a lot of mental and physical therapy and emotional therapy to heal over the years. I was a shell of my former self at one point. I was not myself. To be fair, I was about 19. I went to Catholic school and then all this crazy stuff happened, and I was going, ‘Oh, is this just the way adults are?’ I was very naive.”

Untold Snowfall In Buffalo, NYC
Carolyn Thompson, The Associated Press
Homeowners opened their front doors to find themselves sealed in by sheer walls of white. Shovelers turned walkways into head-high canyons. A woman gave birth in a firehouse after the snow prevented her from reaching the hospital.
Even for Buffalo, a place that typically shrugs at snow, this was an epic snowfall -- the kind of onslaught folks will be telling their grandchildren about.
The Buffalo area found itself buried under as much as 5 1/2 feet of snow Wednesday, with another lake-effect storm expected to bring 2 to 3 more feet by late Thursday.
"This is an historic event. When all is said and done, this snowstorm will break all sorts of records, and that's saying something in Buffalo," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a visit to the city.
