Around The Blogosphere...

Daddybear has a book out. I've read a good chunk of it (I got an advanced sampling that I was supposed to beta-read, but didn't get it finished in time. Mea culpa, Daddybear, mea culpa). It's good stuff. Take a read.

Borepatch is being tested for our old nemesis prostate cancer. This, folks, is why I wear a kilt for 1/12 of the year. Better testing = earlier detection = more folks surviving. I will not let this bastard claim my blogson, not as long as there's a kilt to be worn and a shred of shame to be auctioned...

Tam liked Interstellar. This is now the second person whose advice I value advocating for this movie. I may have to break down and see it in the theater. SCI-FI saw it and loved it, and advised me to see it in IMAX if possible. Fortunately, there's an IMAX theater not even 10 miles from my house.

Robb has a great observation about parenting and kids that succeed. And part of the reason that I am posting this is because I want to brag about BabyGirl G., who made high honor roll her first quarter in middle school. WTG, kiddo!

LawDog recounts Jennifer getting made - as a cop. When I first moved to VA, I was in limbo for a few months while we sold the house in MA and found a house down here. As a result, I had no CCW permit, so the only way I could carry was open carry. Only once did anyone comment, and yes, he asked if I were a cop...

I know the content has been on the lean side recently, but there's always good stuff on the blogroll!

That is all.

Linky Love Time...

There's a lot of good stuff out there, but I've been meaning to share some of these all week long...

True Blue Sam liked my post on the idiocy from the MAIG spokesweasel.

There's a picture, a very real picture, of a woman from the turn of the century who lost her life in a domestic dispute. She didn't have a firearm, and was no physical match for the man who beat her to death. This is the world the folks that run MAIG would like us to live in, where the strong prey on the weak without fear. No thank you.

Gay_Cynic wants to know where the NRA is.

There's a battle going on in his state - not a "lost" states like MA or NY, mind you - where local advocacy groups are fully joined in, yet the NRA is MIA. It's interesting to note this, especially since the folks at MAIG would like you to believe that the NRA is some all-powerful monolith, just flush with cash, that swoops in with dumptrucks full of money whenever any "common sense gun control" needs defeatin'...

Weerd has been cheating on the Squirrel Report!

He got himself invited to come on the Roadgunner Podcast. Go take a listen - and if you're not listening to the Roadgunner, well, you'd damn well better be listening to the Squirrel Report!

Tam rights a wrong.

This is pretty damn cool, y'all. A few days ago, she posted about how her favorite bookstore now had a "no guns allowed" sign. Bad publicity, tenacious commenters, and one big ol' internet later, and the sign is gone. While they didn't put out a statement saying "Tam made us take it down", it's a pretty safe bet that at least some of the complaints they received originated from people finding out through VftP...

TOTWTYTR posts his thoughts about the Sixth Annual Northeast Bloggershoot.

I really like hearing that people had a good time at the shoots. I really enjoy putting these together - and it is a pretty fair amount of work, no lie - but it is so worth it that I can't imagine not doing it. Hearing from someone I consider a good friend that they had a great time? Well, heck, that's the icing on an already awesome cake...

These are just a small sampling of the bloggy goodness out there - go check out some more!

More Linky Love...

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Dragon Leatherworks gets the all-powerful Squirrel Report Squirrel of Approval.

Four out of four Squirrels agree. Dragon Leatherworks makes good stuff. It's what you wear when you want to feel pretty (love that line, Breda). If there's anything I know, SQRLs rarely agree on anything - but we are in 100% agreement that Dragon stuff is top notch.

And, go check out the link - Squirrel butt!

That is all.

Check It Out!

If you're a fan of The Firearm Blog, you should be checking out their new sister site, All Outdoor. It's TFB, but focused on outdoor living - hunting, fishing, etc. It's written with the same politics-free angle (unlike your humble host) only with a nod towards all the gear you might need or want for time spent outdoors.

Good stuff, and well worth the read!

Couple Quick Links

Couple quick links for your perusal:

Danno has a link to a raffle for a good cause.

Hmmm. A chance to win a Winchester SX3 Sporting shotgun (suitable for shooting through doors, just ask Joe Biden) for $10? And the proceeds go to help an organization that teaches kids how to shoot clays? I fail to see the downside here.

Sean was interviewed by a local podcast*.

He talks about the NY Boycott (Now 114 companies) as well as local (NC) politics. If there's one thing we know from Squirrel Report, it's that Sean loves to talk (grin) - so here's your chance to hear him being interviewed.

Give a click, share the linky love!

That is all.

*podcast, not radio. Sorry about that Luke!

All Linky, A Little Thinky...

Some neat stuff from around the gun blogosphere that I found interesting...

LawDog has an excellent treatise on what Terry Pratchett's Commander Vimes calls The Beast. I've wrestled with my "monster" pretty much my entire adult life; I've seen it emerge - sometimes controlled, sometimes not, most often barely. On occasion it has spared me - I've posted about facing down a knife-wielding assailant with little more than a "I'll be excreting pieces of you tomorrow if you don't stop this foolishness" look - on others it has cost me dearly.

Engineering Johnson has a fascinating and detailed look at some beautiful old rifles. This is probably my single favorite part about the gun thing - firearms are, for the most part, durable goods. I have in my collection guns made over 100 years ago that still function completely as intended today. I can haul my grandfather's deer rifle - a Marlin 336 in .30-30 - out of the safe, load it with 5 rounds, and be all set for any game I am likely to encounter here in the northeast (No, I don't hunt moose or bear). And it was made well over 50 years ago...

A working AK-47 pattern rifle made, primarily, from a shovel. I know this has made its way around the gun blogosphere already, but just in case you hadn't seen this, go take a read. The guy's local to me - this is a MA-centric gun board, and I'm fairly certain he's in New England if not MA. Yes, gun control will really work when someone with a forge and some metalworking knowledge can turn a freakin' shovel into a semi-automatic rifle...

Tam has her first "old fogey" moment with so-called pop music. I stopped paying attention to music pretty much in the mid-1990s for the most part. Grunge wasn't too bad, but when it degenerated into WhineGrunge I lost interest. I've had a passing familiarity with current music owing to the little people running around my house, but can't say I care for it all that much. Why, back in the day...

ZOMG, Robb doesn't like the newest offering from KRISS! I think it's interesting how he and I had such radically different impressions of the same rifle, the Vector. I thought it was interesting from an engineering standpoint, but it didn't really do anything for me; Robb loved it so much he plunked down the samoleans to keep his. To each his own, I guess. And "10 pounds of fried butt lard" is quality snark in any measure...

There's plenty more great stuff out there, but these are the ones that jumped out at me the most.

That is all.

Shock the Monkey!

Robb has a very apt analogy on what's going on right now WRT the election.

Other than snipe at the media for their ham-handed bias in this election, I haven't really been all that involved. I don't think this is going to be anywhere near the blowout that some people seem to think it's going to be; I don't think Romney is going to win - he's definitely not going to be outside the margin of cheat. I don't think Romney's got what it takes to go up against Chicao politics should he fail to run away with the electoral count - my prediction is that if the count is anywhere near close, we're going to see lawyers descend on every swing state within 5%. We may not know the winner for months.

And, in all honesty, it really doesn't matter. The same special interest groups that bought favor under Obama will buy favor under Romney. Obama was supposed to come into office, shun the corporate fatcats and military industrial complex, etc. and instead just installed his own versions thereof. People screamed bloody murder about Halliburton getting government contracts in Iraq because Dick Cheney used to work for them; however no one seems to mind that the company part-owned by James Biden (yes, Joe's brother) just won a $1.5 billion contract in Iraq. Yes, crony capitalism is bad, unless it's your crony capitalism.

It doesn't matter which of the two chimps chumps candidates win next Tuesday. I'll make the following predictions: Large campaign contributors will be rewarded with government contracts and/or plum assignments; government largess will be bestowed on companies that have absolutely no reason nor claim to it; and lobbyists will continue to have unfettered access to the levers of power. If Obama gets in, he's only got four years left to continue wreaking havoc - but he doesn't have to face re-election. If Romney gets in, he will have to think about re-election, but he'll also face intense scrutiny every step of the way, plus we'll start having problems with homelessness, etc. again.

I forget who made the analogy, but "choose the form of your destructor" is especially apt this election...

That is all.

Around the Blogosphere...

Had a bunch of disjointed links I wanted to toss out, so here goes:

Kathy Jackson (of Cornered Cat fame, but you knew that) is blogging now. Yay!

Matthew has some excellent thoughts on the lowly .22LR as a defensive arm. I'd take Matthew armed with a Colt Woodsman over a lot of other folks armed with a .45.

Robb Allen, the Pantless Wonder, turns 40 today. Go wish him a Happy Pantless Birthday.

Through Firehand, we hear of Adaptive Curmudgeon's adventures with predators (read in order, from left to right). CAUTION: Level III Beverage Alert in full effect. I read this in Friendly's on my iPhone while having dinner with my daughter. Fortunately I managed to avoid getting any of my soda on the poor girl...

Matt G. (no relation) has a take on our mutual time in Colorado that is spot-on. I suck for many of the same reasons, but not the 50 BMG one. I took a grand total of 41 pictures, and a handful of video - this is literally an order of magnitude less than what I normally take a blog outing. There were two reasons for this: First and foremost, I was having too much damned fun to mess around with a camera. There were a lot of funny, smart, interesting-as-hell people in CO, and I wasn't going to waste precious jaw time holding a shutter to my eyeball. Secondly, there are a number of folks that do not wish their countenances to be displayed online. I can understand this; I don't feel that way but I know others do and I respect it, and the best way to not inadvertantly display someone else's mug is to not take the picture in the first place. My mind's eye is the best camera, anyways...

#1 Blogdaughter has some seriously awesome skills. Go check out her Uber Project - saying that it is impressive does not do it justice by any means.

Anyhoo, go, read, enjoy!

That is all.

This Pleases Me.

I'm seeing the Dead Goblin Count showing up as a link to a lot of forums discussing the CO shooting. Folks are using the DGC exactly as intended - to highlight just how often that firearms are used to defend innocent life. I can't take credit for the DGC - I'm continuing the work that Kim du Toit started with the count - but I'm happy and proud to keep it going. I'd like to extend a HUGE "thank you" to everyone that sends me stories - you folks provide me with the vast majority of DGC additions.

I'd also like to point out Weerdbeard's Gun Death files - for stories of people injured or killed by means other than firearms, as well as Barron's State-Sponsored Criminal Count - for stories of the very reason our Founding Fathers sought to include the right to keep and bear arms. Check these guys out, and if you come across any stories that fit into their compilations, let them know. I like to think that these three lists are the "Second Amendment Trifecta" - my list shows that people do in fact use firearms to protect themselves; Weerd's list shows that even in the absence of firearms people find ways to hurt and kill others; and Barron's list shows that there is a very real and valid reason for keeping arms in the hands of the people.

Thanks to Weerd and Barron for their lists and to everyone that sends us articles!

That is all.

Proud (Blog) Papa...

One of my blogsons tries his hand at video editing:

Hitler Finds Out About The Feral Irishman

I know, I know, I'm late to the party with the linky love, but this is still pretty darn cool. And I don't say that just because I get a shout-out in it... PISSED managed to hit most of the local (and no longer local) gunbloggers and still keep it somewhat on-target with the original footage. While these videos have been around for a bit, this is a new and unique take.

Plus, as I may have mentioned, I get a shout-out...

You Might Be A Gun Geek If...

Skidmark sent me this graphic, cleverly developed by the folks at ThePeoplesCube.com:

(image taken from this post)

Naturally, the very first thing that I noticed was that the firearm used was a Walther P38 (I suppose it could be a P1; it's hard to tell from the graphic whether that's a steel slide or aluminum...). Go and read the whole article (heck, the entire site), there's snark a'plenty there.

I still can't help wondering what would be happening right now if the media paid as much attention to Gunwalker as they did l'affaire Plame...

Shameless Promotion...

There's a promo currently going on from the good folks at SIG SAUER for some quality SIG SAUER gear to go with your P220, P226, P229, or P239. You get a holster, double mag pouch, two magazines, and a range bag all for not at lot more than the price of two new factory magazines:

If you're in the market for some SIG SAUER accessories, this might be the time to check it out. There's more information - and other deals - at their Facebook page. And no, there's no truth to the rumor that this gratuitous plug is brought to you in the vain hopes that there will be more cool SIG SAUER gear to review...

So why not check out the deal and "Like" SIG SAUER on FB while you're at it!

That is all.

Monday Gun Pr0n

No, not here. Over at fellow Northeast bloggershoot attendee Zercool's place, he's showing off a shiny new Ithaca Arms Model 37 12 gauge with what appears to be a three foot long barrel. Compensate much, Z? *g* He's also selling one of my "grail" guns, a Smith & Wesson model 242ti that, if I could find an FFL willing to transfer it, would be mine. Alas, no one dares challenge the MA AG (That would be Marsha "Lost Ted Kennedy's Senate Seat" Coakley) and face financial ruination for transferring a 20 year old revolver...

At least you can go and look at it, and maybe someone in free America can give her a good home.

A Personal Favor, if You Will...

Bob S. just discovered that his wife has bilateral breast cancer. Bob's good people; I'm sure his Mrs. is good people, too. If you do that sort of thing, please offer up a little prayer to your deity of choice for a full and speedy recovery. At the least, please keep this good man and his wife in your thoughts in their hour of need and trial. Breast cancer is surmountable - as I mentioned in comments, my mother-in-law is in her 15th year of remission - but it takes a lot of strength to do so.

Bob, I'll put in my request with The Big Guy and keep you and the Mrs. in my thoughts and prayers in the coming days - and please keep us posted.

That is all.

Blogroll Updates...

Got a couple quick updates, one addition and one change.

Addition: The interestingly named Guns and Ammo by Aaron. A second amendment based blog with good commentary, interesting links, and other good stuff.

Change: The Firing Pin Journal is now Rifles, Pistols, & Jay. Adjust your blogroll accordingly.

Also, a number of gunbloggers have linked to this list of gunbloggers. You might notice a few people on the list, including your humble host, who is characterized thusly:
Jay G blogs about 2nd Amendment issues and politics in general. The oppressive Massachusetts gun laws are frequently discussed.

"Oppressive" would be putting it lightly... Thanks for the linky-love Steve!
