Come Monday...Looking For Sites To See

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

I have been asked several times just how I find all of the sites for my [Sites To See] series.  Even though I was always quite willing to give an answer at the time since I work really hard at appearing to be a wonderful person, I am now willing to spill all of the beans (so to speak).

First of all, I do not believe that I actually “find” any of them.  For the old adage about even a blind squirrel can find a nut every once in a while is incomplete.   For in the same way as nuts are placed in front of blind squirrels, sites are placed where I can see them.  (I will leave just who may be in charge of nut-placement for you to constipate on at your convenience.)

Of course, it helps to also be given a talent for lurking in the shadows.  For that is usually the only way really ugly guys can get dates with relatively sober girls, and despite the fact that I have always had to  beat ‘em off with a stick, it is good to know that there is little I am incapable of.

Yeah, I was being quite humble there.  For the truth is that there is nothing I am incapable of.

I am sorry.  I do not mean to make you feel like there is no way that you could ever find a good site to see on your own.  Life can be rather daunting, I know, but if you will just follow my instructions to the letter, you will always be much better off.

Back when I was first given the idea in February of 2008, the Sites To See series started off as Five For Friday, and most of the sites came from what could be found on [Blog Catalog].  Sadly, the powers that be at Blog Catalog decided to shake things up 3-4 years ago, and it became quite a challenge to find much of anything I wanted to there.  So, I stopped making regular visits, and I suppose it wouldn’t be a bad idea for me to cut all ties with Blog Catalog before they decide to make even more drastic changes.

The next happy hunting ground was [Entrecard], which was a lot of fun while it lasted.  The fun stopped for me after they hinted at monetizing the points that one could accumulate from dropping and then failed to deliver in an extremely ugly fashion.

[Adgitize] came next, and it did not take long before I became just as disillusioned with it.  Considering the fact that both Entrecard and Adgitize are now defunct, maybe I wasn’t being as hard to please as some thought.

Anyway, I have been shown since that the real treasure trove of sites well worth seeing can be found on individual blogrolls and following lists—especially on high quality sites.  For birds of a feather really do tend to flock together.

Aside from stalking around in the owner profiles of sites I am considering for inclusion, it has been brought to my attention that checking out the profiles of those who leave comments can sometimes lead to some rather interesting discoveries (sometimes not).

Now, in regards to what makes the grade, I really am incredibly fair.  For as is explained in the Sites To See disclaimer at the top of each edition, I am looking for what may be found to be interesting in one way or another, and even disgusting sites can sometimes be considered interesting when enough adult beverages are consumed (sometimes not).

When it comes to order of placement, I have a system that goes by when a site is found, and each section is listed in alphabetical order.  This is the way sites are also listed in each edition.

Alas, if all was as it should be, it would normally take around six months from the first time I see a site to when it is actually included in a Sites To See, but all has not been as it should be since lightning took out our previous computer [last June].  For one of the files that I failed to make a back-up of was the one that held the order of the sites waiting to be seen, and adding all the more to the grief I endure for your viewing pleasure, dropping those who have not seen fit to get rid of the [awful] word verification spam detection thingy has forced me to basically start from scratch.  So, newly discovered sites are often mixed in with those that have been on the list for months.

Oh, and that should help with what gives with the images I include for each site.  For I look for something that catches my attention when I first visit a site.  Therefore, the image may be from an older article.

Since I use the same image from when a site was in a Sites To See when it comes time for it to be included in a A Sunday Drive, you can count on it being from a fairly old article.  For it usually takes around a year before that time comes, which follows the previous order for sites that are still fairly active (at least one post in the preceding three months).  Although, the time in between should be getting shorter with sites that have the word verification thingy engaged no longer being included.

Oh yeah, that word verification monstrosity has become the bane of my online existence.  For checking to see if an owner has it engaged takes a lot of time that I do not have to spare, and there are times when I wonder if you-all are worth all of the trouble.  Then my wife gives me another concussive head-slap, and I endeavor to persevere some more.

Come Monday...Vaya Con Dios, Entrecard

Just in case you missed it, I published [Eyeballin’ Entrecard] six weeks ago on account of how dissatisfied I had become with the service. Be assured that I really did hope that it would serve as another wake-up call, and that [Entrecard] would finally start to at least try to actually address some of the concerns that have been raised by many of their members.

No, I am very much not alone in my dissatisfaction. For hundreds have also voiced their concerns, and a click on the image above while reveal further proof of that.

Now, this is not to say that all of the criticism has been warranted. In fact, I was a loyal supporter of Entrecard when so many were screaming about them introducing paid advertisements to the mix. For I could see where that could potentially be a good money-maker for us all, but my hopes for that have been left unfulfilled.

No, it is not for that reason, but enough is enough. Therefore, I will be deleting my account and removing my Entrecard widget on January 1, 2011.

Be assured that the irony is not lost on me. For it was always upsetting to me to no longer find an Entrecard widget on one of the sites that I used to drop on every day, and now I have heard from several who have wanted me to stay with the service because this is where they frequently drop.

Alas, the battle has been raging in my head for weeks now, and it finally came down to a matter of who is serving who. For Entrecard benefits from my membership—even if only as another site to place a paid ad on while they have made it blatantly obvious that they have no desire to be of service to me by not even taking the time to acknowledge that they received my emails—let alone acting like they actually cared about what they [have said] that they cared about.

Just in case you are curious, links to most of the sites that I found to be in non-compliance of the official Entrecard [Blog Quality Standards] can be accessed [here]. Please keep in mind that it may be different with some now, but I am quite confident that the vast majority of them are still in non-compliance. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if many more sites could be added to the list now.

By the way, you may not be able to pull-up that Google Doc with the non-compliant sites if you are using Internet Explorer 8. It seems to do just fine with Firefox, but not so much with IE8.

Yes, it probably seems so petty, but it should make one wonder what a business that has made it so obvious that they are only concerned with what they consider to be in their best interest may be capable of. After all, I hear that there is money to be made from selling email addresses to spammers—amongst other things.

Come Monday...Eyeballin' Entrecard

If you are not familiar with the term, to eyeball something is to take a good look at it.  Quite often, the inference is to take a very close look, and this is what I have attempted to do at [Entrecard].

Since this will undoubtedly be considered to be rather critical (to say the least) by many, I would like to first explain some things.  For I was a very enthusiastic member of the Entrecard community, and I would still like to be if some changes were made.

Much of my prior enthusiasm was due to the amount of traffic I started getting here on this site after signing-up with Entrecard.  For it was only averaging around 100 unique visitors a month beforehand, and in not really very long at all, over three times that many were coming by a day!  If I remember right, around 450 was the highest total of drops in a day here, and around 10, 000 unique visitors were stopping by each and every month for well over a year and a half.

Oh yeah, I was starting to feel like I was really somebody, and when I saw my fish hawk perched on top of the Religion and Spirituality Category for the first time, I wanted to believe that Entrecard would be a vehicle to finally get what I had been given to say by our Heavenly Father out into this world.  Alas, what a fool I can be.

No, this is not to say that it has not done any good.  For I have met (so to speak) some very good people through Entrecard, but over 90% of the traffic through the service will invariably be on a drop-and-run mission, which rarely results in anything catching their eye but the Entrecard widget.

Okay, those who are also [Adgitizers] will be looking for that widget, as well, but that still doesn’t get them anymore interested in the content that has been posted.  For there is usually just not enough hours in a day for most to get all of their drops in and pay any real attention to what the author of each particular site may have to say about something.

Yeah, I have been as hypocritical as anyone about this.  For I would deny being a drop-and-runner while doing exactly that much of the time.

Ah, but I have gotten ahead of myself a little bit.  For it has only been lately that I have become concerned about exorbitant [bounce rates].

In fact, I became an even more enthusiastic supporter of Entrecard when the announcement was made about plans for a revenue-sharing program back in March of 2009—especially when it was speculated that a 1,000 credits would be worth $15.00.  For I immediately got out my trusty old solar-powered Casio calculator, and it soon became clear that I could start making some money for a change!

Well, so much for that.  For that $15.00 per thousand turned out to be a dollar a thousand, and by the time it was all over, I had pocketed a whole $10.00.

Ah, but I still have hope for something like that to be successful.  For unlike most other advertising opportunities, Entrecard can guarantee that an ad placed with them will get noticed.  For their members will be looking right at it when they go to make a drop, and wouldn’t you be intrigued by an ad that said something about Coca-Cola coupons or Dell Computer discounts?

So, why didn’t it work before?  Well, that’s a good question, and I think I have found an answer or two, with plain old-fashioned stupidity being at the top of the list.

No, I do not believe that is being too harsh.  For they have had nothing to gain, and everything to lose, by the way Entecard has been run over the past year and a half or so.

If you wouldn’t mind, please go back and look at the image at the beginning of this presentation.  Do you see where it says, FREE traffic on over 40,000 websites, in the green part?  (Click-on the image, if you don't have super-human sight).  Well, there are actually 49,286 sites on Entrecard if you add-up how many are listed in the various categories, but in reality, there are actually only 11,182.

If you would like to do some checking on your own, just click on the title of a category.  A page with 15 sites will then come up, and if you would like to see just how many sites are really in that category, keep clicking next and keep track of how many times you will do so until you get to the end.  Since Home and Garden is the first one listed in the image I have included of the Categories Page, I will use it as an example of what I am trying to convey.  For it says that there are 526 sites in this category, but 24 x 15, plus 6, only adds up to 366!

Ironically, the Home and Garden category is one of the closest to having an honest count.  If you would like to check out a real shocker, go take a gander at the Art category.  For according to my calculations, 21 x 15, + 15, adds up to 326—not 2,367.

Okay, you might not experience the same reaction, but it really did come as quite a shock to me to find only four sites on the second page of the History category when there was supposed to be another full page of fifteen, along with enough to total 123.  Hey, I even went looking for the possibility of there being a lot of hidden sites somewhere else, and I thought I may have found them when it was pointed out to me that only the sites that were accepting advertising were being shown at the settings I was using.  So, I checked the box to show even the sites that did not accept advertising., and this did make a difference, which is what the N/A column is all about.  No, it was not a big difference, as you can plainly see.

Yes, the numbers I compiled in October are different than the ones I am giving you now, which were compiled around 18 hours before this piece was actually published.  They change a lot, and they will probably be even more different when you get around to checking things out for yourself.

No, I do not see where there is anything to gain by misrepresenting the true amount of sites.  For anyone doing their due diligence could plainly see that their ad is not going to get nearly as much exposure as they are being told that it would.

It gets worse.  For out of the 11,182 site that were actually on Entrecard and accepting advertising in October, at least 5,382 sites were in a state of non-compliance with the official [Blog Quality Standards], and I wasn’t even getting real picky about it!

                            Inaccessible                          223
                            No Widget                             394
                            Non-English                            28
                            No Content                                4
                            Pop-Up Ad                              29
                            Porn                                            2
                            Redirect                                    14
                            Virus                                         30
                            Past 90 Days                        1339
                            Way Past 90 Days                 684
Way Way Past 90 Days            2
                            Not Above The Fold            2633

No, I cannot say that I really did visit each and every one of the 11,182 sites.  For the way I went about it was to click on each icon as they were listed in the various categories, and they moved around somewhat.  Therefore, I am quite sure that I did miss some, which means that the non-compliance total may be even worse.  For I only listed what I actually found.

Just in case you may not be quite sure what I have listed, Inaccessible covers the sites that had suspended accounts, lost domains and could not be found.  The rest are pretty straight-forward, except for maybe Way Past 90 Days and Way Way Past 90 Days.  For Way Past 90 Days covered the sites that had not been posted to since January 1, 2010, and Way Way Past 90 Days was reserved for one site that had not been posted to since 2005 and another since 2001.

No, none of this may mean a thing to you, but I am quite sure that it does to prospective advertisers, which is where the money for a revenue-sharing program would come from.  For who is going to see an ad on a site that no longer exists or has other problems that discourages people from wanting to visit it?

Besides, a lot of quality sites have dropped out of Entrecard because of much of the “stuff” going on there, and this should be of at least some concern to you.  That is, unless you do not mind hanging out with a bunch of morons like I used to be.

Okay, it is hard to argue with the fact that I am still pretty much a moron.  For even after all of my efforts to get in touch with the Support Department to report my findings have been ignored, I still hold onto some hope that the powers that be over at Entrecard will sober up enough to get their act together.

Yes, I am going to start holding my breath now.  So, if it takes me a while to reply to your comments, it probably means that my hopes are being dashed (again).

Entrecard Top Droppers: April, 2010

Well, another month has come and went, and I don’t know what to think about [Entrecard]. Okay, I suppose I do, but it is not something that I am comfortable with. For I know that the detractors are right in regards to far too many Entrecard members being really nothing more than hustlers at best, and downright scoundrels at worst. For in order to take full advantage of what the system has to offer, one must drop 300 cards a day, which would take 25 hours to complete—just spending 5 minutes on each site.

So, a compromise must be reached. For if I remember right, there are only 24 hours in each day.

Yet, I still want my cake and to eat it, too. For I keep dropping 300 cards a day while denying that I am as much of a “drop and runner” as anyone else is. Hence, the uncomfortable part.

No, I don’t know what I am going to do. For how can I keep hoping for as many as will to pay close attention to what is going on here (along with what is contained on [FishHawk Droppings]) while I regularly spend mere seconds on most of their sites?

Speaking of such, it would seem that what house-cleaning that the powers that be over at Entrecard have done has gotten rid of much of the so-called ghost-dropping. For I was getting well over 9,000 drops every month (sometimes over 10,000) before, and now the amount is only around 7,500.

Of course, some of that is due to many quality sites leaving the system because of this or that. To be quite honest about it, I would like to leave, as well, but I think there may be something to what I’ve heard about Entrecard dropping being rather addicting. Besides, even if only one out the thousands catches a glimpse of what our Heavenly Father has given me to say, it is well worth all of the pain and aggravation.

Therefore, I should just get on with listing the top droppers here for last month in alphabetical order. Be assured that I greatly appreciate their efforts, but this may be the last time I post such a list. For I suspect that it is not entirely accurate.

Entrecard Top Droppers: March, 2010

Well, I was a little premature with my big announcement about changing some things here. For I forgot about not posting the top 25 droppers this month in alphabetical order yet, and since I really do greatly appreciate the efforts of all who take the time to do an Entrecard drop here each day, I just had to sneak this in there. So, Weird Al will get some time to regroup this week.

Oh yeah, I found out something a couple of days ago that came as a quite a shock to me. For it was brought to my attention that I have been with Entrecard over a year now. Hey, I even broke out my trusty solar-powered sun dial to help shed some light on the fact that I may really be a mushroom, and after several complex computations, the proof was proven to be unchallengeable. Who knew?
