Angel by Carter Brown

Angel
by Carter Brown

Police Lieutenant Al Wheeler meets a blonde tease whose good-luck charms are murder!

Grant Roberts Cover

Angel was 100% female, she was the answer to every mans dream. Beside her, even Venus took second place. One minute with Angel and Al Wheeler actually found himself enjoying the fact he had been sent to check out a routine traffic complaint. Five minutes with Angel and Al knew he was in for the right place, at the right time, with the right girl. Because in those five minutes, Wheeler had become a witness to murder.

When unorthodox cop Al Wheeler goes investigating a complaint about the dangerous skylarks of ex-Air Force heroes, the situation suddenly explodes into a baffling murder case.

Joy Ride to Death
The murder victim was the wrong man. The ex-jet flier took up the plane out of turn. And because he did, he died out of turn. All the evidence there was disintegrated in mid-air with the exploding plane. The mourners included six prime suspects: Three other ex-jet jockeys, ex-buddies of the murderer man, an airplane mechanic with a grudge, and two delectable dolls, one of whom was the intended victim's wife, the other his current "girl of the week".

The Blonde by Carter Brown

We kick off the Alan G Yates Month with his best seller,
The Blonde

Lee Manning, film land Romeo, committed suicide after a Hollywood bash. Or did he? Georgia Brown, babbling blonde, could tell what really happened. But would she? Paula Reid, demon TV interviewer,m was going to spill the facts on her TV show. But could she? Before the story got a chance to sizzle the airwaves, a killer stepped in and stopped George Brown dead. So Police Lieutenant Al Wheeler plays a near fatal role in an underground production of murder.

Carter Brown Double Feature

Two Classic Al Wheeler Thrillers

Delilah Was Deadly/No Harp For My Angel
Cover by Xou Creative
Delilah Was Deadly
"Someone's throwing corpse around so fast I'd call a cop, only I'd look sort of silly if I did!"

Unorthodox L.A. cop Lieutenant Al Wheeler has just been promoted to the head of Homicide following his success cracking his last case. This time around, a social editor of a fashion magazine is discovered dead inside a safe, strangled with a pink nylon girdle, wearing his silk pajamas. It looks like this might be the work of Satanists but before long the bodies start to pile up when one of Al's colleagues gets killed.......

No Harp For My Angel
"She was sitting on a stool at the bar with an old-fashioned in front of her. It was the only old-fashioned thing about her!"

Al Wheeler is vacationing in Florida when he hits on a redhead named Julie Adams, and thus meets crime boss Johnny Lynch. Lynch has Al beat up and framed for a car theft, but fortunately the local chief of police is an old friend of Al's. He tells Al that a lot of pretty young girls have gone missing in the area, and that he thinks Lynch is involved. Wheeler is talked into going undercover to get tot eh bottom of it....

Another Carter Brown Triple Play

Stark House Mystery Classics

 Introduction By Rick Ollerman
Carter Brown was the literary pseudonym of Alan Geoffrey Yates (August 1923-May 1985) He was an English-born Australian writer of detective fiction. Mr Yates wrote more than 300 mysteries during his lifetime. His books, originally published by Horwitz and Signet, were set in the United States and published throughout the world. In its obituary for Yates in 1985, The New York Times noted that he had written "some 30 detective novels with American backgrounds before ever having visited the United States. He said he chose American settings because Australians preferred them."
A rumor spread at the height of his popularity that Yates was one of John F. Kennedy's favorite authors, a rumor which helped propel his sales even further in the North American market. Carter Brown's huge international success saw reportedly 120 million books in print, second only to The Bible in terms of the number of languages into which they were translated. The success of the books also spawned a comic book series, the 'Carter Brown Murder Mystery Hour' on radio, three French films, a Japanese TV series, and a French literary award for 'The most whiskies drunk in a single novel'.
