This seemed a bit of a curiosity when I picked it up off dime some time ago. Workman, Crispell and Cyrille had played and recorded together on a number of previous occasions, but the quartet that Reggis led at the time comprised these three plus Oliver Lake. The inclusion of Joseph Jarman, to me anyway, seemed a little odd (though I believe he had made a recording with Crispell). Jarman's style of play, least what I've heard of him, seemed a little alien to this type of quartet. Maybe he was just standing in for Oliver Lake, I can only guess.

Much of this concert is Coltraneish. Track 6 sounds like a tune that either Eric Dolphy or Jackie Maclean recorded. I can't make my mind whether or not Jarman is entirely comfortable playing this sort of stuff. On track 4, the bells, whistles, gongs and flutes come out, which is more like the familiar AEC material on which he surpasses.

This is an audience recording. Listenable but not brilliant sound quality, with a bit of microphone rustle here and there. Also the excellent Ms Crispell soldiers on gamely with an out-of-tune piano, that bane of a pianist's life. All in all, the quality will not be enhanced by a flac version so I'll just post mp3.

Anthony Braxton - Marilyn Crispell - London 1993

There was a mention of this in the comments section and an apparent interest to have it posted, so here goes ...
Recorded live at Bloomsbury Theatre, Inaugural London Jazz Festival, London, May 22, 1993, this is a duo of Braxton on a variety of reeds and Crispell on piano. Crispell was in the 80s Braxton Quartet, but has since made a number of recordings under her own name, putting her in the top league of female pianists, of which there aren't too many.
I'm not famiiar with the individual tracks here, but perhaps the Braxton expertise may help out ...
This appears to be off a radio programme, but I have no information about which one and when. Most likely the BBC.
Posted on BigO and downloaded from there, including cover art. They do serve up the goodies, now and then (but you gotta be quick to catch 'em!)

marilyn crispell-labyrinths (solo piano)1987

hi

heres marilyn crispell's, classic solo concert on victo
recorded on the 2nd of october 1987 at victoriaville in canada.
this was the victo lables 6th release and it's one of her many stunning solo recitals .
i dont understand why this is out of print , her recent very different quiescent modal albums on ecm have sold in reasonably large(for this music)
quantities.
why wont victo cash in to even a small extent ?
here she plays 2 coltrane tunes and a couple of standards as well as some free improvs and tunes of her own.
the standards are treated very differently than you might expect if you're only familiar with her more recent work.
its torrential by comparison,
well worth your'e time and effort,
and this cd'd will require effort, once youve made it youre hooked
for life!!
find out more at m's own website here http://www.marilyncrispell.com/
suggestion \buy any of marilyn's albums on the music and arts lable, because a lot of it is either deleted or being fazed out.
