VARIOUS "JAZZ ASPEKTE" (NOVA, 1973-75)

This is a rather unusual release for the German Democratic Republic.
Generally the label NOVA was for contemporary classic, entertainment and experimental releases.
But for some reason the music on this LP was not issued on the label AMIGA which had a series called AMIGA Jazz.
Further I would like to point out that the given bassist for track B2 is most likely not Blazeowsky but Christoph Niemann.
Niemann is credited for this role on all three editions of the LP which was solely reserved for FEZ (AMIGA 8 55 585, 1978).  And the title which is included on this LP is the same as on the FEZ LP/CD.

Not only was this a minor bummer but also the music played here by the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Berlin. Nothing wrong with it for sure but as NOVA was a label reserved also for experimental music I expected something more at the margins. But expectations aren't necessarily the best guide for enjoyment. So have fun as I had after I've accepted what's on this disc ;-)

And finally here's a request. The only other recording by FEZ is on an LP released in 1979 by the
Czechoslovakian label OPUS. The festival sampler "Bratislavské Džezové Dni 1976" contains more than 15 minutes of an otherwise unavailable composition by this special group.

Gumpert's trio and the ensemble of Hubert Katzenbeier (here not on trombone!) are in fine form - as expected....

JAZZ-ORCHESTER der DDR (AMIGA, 1988)

Two LPs with Conny Bauer respectively Manfred Hering as leader. As far as I know the only recordings by a Free Big-Band from the DDR.
About one year later the wall came down and the musicians had to face not only an economical situation quiet different. For the majority of the East-Germans , who endured the five-year-plans et.al., BMW, Prada and Marlboro became far more important than some "esoteric" sounds. Very soon it became obvious that for most fans Free Jazz was more of a social thing (Free Jazz = Freedom) than a genuine artform.
Some of the former advocates are even listening to schlager or similar today - and this is no supposition or bias but a simple observation.
 It seems this LP was 'washed' away by history - it's release in 1989 wasn't helpful apparently.

GÜNTER SOMMER - ASCENSEUR POUR LE 28 (NATO 329 LP)

Günter Sommer and three old friends, or the Synopsis group who were central to an important development of the German Democratic Republic scene in the 70s. Here a decade later on what I percieve to be a mostly unknown French release on the Nato label, I was extremely lucky to find a copy in 2008 on the internet.

A snippet about the group from Heffley "...Such changes lay in the group's decision to use traditional German materials (mostly Medieval and folk) and aesthetics (lyrical, melodic, from the Romantic period) as the springboard, along the lines of Ornette Coleman's melodies, into free improvisation. They did this without the Western sense of sarcasm or irony, more with respect and affection. Unlike the West Germans, for them it was a reassertion, not a denial, of local identity beyond that imposed by the Russian occupiers, and of European roots that matched the African roots unearthed by their heroes from America."

I highly recommend it.
