UPCOMING & RECENT RELEASES XVIII

May will be a good month for those who still buy records. Once again Nobusiness records will publish several exciting titles.

Obviously they have started a reissue program of archival recordings of Sam Rivers. The first volume will be a trio with Norman Connors & Cecil McBee, this trio previously has recorded the fantastic « Stream »

Another great reissue is this obscure session recorded by Sunny Murray in 1994 with two musicians that comes from the alternative rock. Previously published on lp in a very limited quantity (less than 30 copies), it will be reissued with more music.

For those who appreciate Ton-Klami here is part of the band with only Midori Takada and the impressive Kang Tae Hwan only in duet

Last but not least there is a reissue from a fantastic Detail session done in 1982. (Previously released on vinyl as Okhela) If you have missed the cd on FMR published almost one year ago, don’t miss this one.

From the french label Dark Tree records here is finally the first reissue of unpublished concerts by Horace Tapscott. This show happened few month before Tapscott’s death. The Pan African Peoples Arkestra is joined by the chorus of The Great Voices of UGMAA

Let me tell you also that Dave Douglas’s Green Leaf label has started few years ago a program of subscriptions and publish some music only available for the subscribers: take a look at the incredible line up of this 2017 release:

KANG TAE HWAN "CLEARNESS" (PSYCHO DISC, 1999)

My appreciation for Kang Tae Hwan should be clear to all who followed my posts since I was invited in September 2010.
Kazuhisha Uchihashi has played with a lot of musicians from Europe (Bailey, Brötzmann, Roger Turner) but also with Leo Smith, Barre Phillips, Otomo Yoshihide and Elliott Sharp.
You'll find a good profile here.
Ichiraku Yoshimitsu isn't as popular as Uchihashi (in the western hemisphere) - but his CV is as impressive as Uchihashi's > George Lewis,  Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M and Korean trumpet-player Choi Sun Bae a.o.
Take a look for his profile there.

This post is a request by Nick which I happily oblige!

IMPORTANT _ Please give me some feedback wether the links are available again! (16.01.2013)

In the year 2002 I heard for the first time Kang Tae Hwan. Some months later I read about the group "Ton Klami". But it lasted until winter 2009 that a japanese acquaintance brought me this deleted CD from Japan.
Share the joy about hearing it for the first time with me...

KANG TAE HWAN "ASIAN SPIRITS"

Another gem from Kang Tae Hwan. Here he collaborates with two master musicians from Japan.

This recording was initiated by Teruto Soejima. He's together with Aquirax Aida (1946 - 1978) the most prolific critic and organiser/promoter of the japanese Free Jazz scene.
He also wrote the seminal book about japanese Free Jazz - Nihon Free Jazz-shi [The History of Japanese Free Jazz] - sadly only in japanese language. He has organized such events as the 14-day Free Jazz festival "Inspiration and Power" (in 1974 and 1976) etc.

KANG TAE HWAN "KOREAN FREE MUSIC" (YEH EUM 1989) & SINAWI MUSIC OF KOREA (KING 1984)

Before posting more japanese OOP - here are two recordings from (South) Korea.
The first is from Kang Tae Hwan - saxophonist extraordinaire! - with the first recording of Free Jazz (Music) from this divided country. Both LP and CD are sadly deleted.
In an article some months ago in the magazine "The Wire" the german saxophonist Alfred Harth said that Kang Tae Hwan, Choi Sun Bae and Kim Dae Hwan (rip!) are content with playing their music without thinking about posteriority. Therefore one can only find few recordings with these astounding musicians.
Midori Takada is a musician which plays prominently in "Contemporary Classic" context.
And Evan Parker I do not need to introduce. In fact I became aware of Kang Tae Hean through an interview with Evan Parker, where he mentioned him.

Some CDs can be obtained here: http://www.afterhours.co.kr/product/korea_list.asp?

The second is "Sinawi Music from Korea" and goes back several hundreds years at least.
This music from the south of Korea comes from its shamanistic tradition and it sounds sometimes like a wondrous kind of Free Music. It was used (maybe still is) during healing ceremonies. This is an "art" version but nonetheless more than captivating.
