Bring On the Back-ups: "The Man Who Skyjacked Hawkman!" by Rozakis, Rogers, Austin, and Adams

Happy Holidays, Groove-ophiles! Here's hoping the cheer of the season is rocking on for ya! We're back today with the final Calculator back-up, this time featuring Hawkman! "The Man Who Skyjacked Hawkman!", from Detective Comics #467 (October 1976), uses a tried-and-true comicbook framing device (utilizing The Batman, himself) not only to tell its story, but to set up the grand finale (which you can read right here). Bob Rozakis is still rocking the writing, Marshall Rogers is making his mark with the art, and inker Terry Austin gets help from none other than Neal Adams. Hoo-hah!

Murphy Anderson Week: "The Case of the Off-Key Crimes!" by Wein and Anderson

Hawkman! We can't possibly spend a week celebrating the work of Murphy Anderson without including one of his Hawkman masterpieces! And if Ol' Groove's not terribly mistaken (and I'm sure someone out there is ready to correct me if I am, so lay it on me, baby), this is Anderson's next-to-last  Hawkman job as both penciler and inker, so that makes it kinda special. From Detective Comics #480 (August 1978) here's "The Case of the Off-Key Crimes!" written by Len Wein!

Groove's Faves: "Today Mars, Tomorrow...the Universe!" by Haney, Swan, and Anderson

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Today we're gonna take a look at the grand finale of Denny O'Neil, Michael Netzer (Mike Nasser), and Terry Austin's Manhunter from Mars epic that ran in Adventure Comics 449-451! Thing is, "Today Mars, Tomorrow...the Universe!" is written by Bob Haney with art by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson! Wha hoppen? Wish Ol' Groove could tell ya, but the comix biz has always been kinda weird about who's writing and drawing what--especially back in the Groovy Age. Writer Denny O'Neil was the story editor for this particular ish of World's Finest (#245, March 1977, to be precise), so one can only assume he made sure Haney ended the saga the way it was intended. And as much as Ol' Groove loves the Swanderson art team, it sure would've been cool if Netzer and Austin had done the art here. Ah, well, at least we had 'em for the Green Arrow and Black Canary back-ups in this self-same ish! Oh, yeah, did Ol' Groove mention that Superman and Batman star in this here conclusion?
