Dig it, Groove-ophiles! A creepy, cool masterpiece by the Budd Lewis and Val Mayerik. "Winterbeast" is from Creepy #120 (June 1980).
Why do I keep hearing Steve Martin's voice in my head yelling, "He spoke French!"?

Groove's Faves: "Childhood's End" by Lewis and Corben
Three days left in the...
...so let's do this right!
Here it is, Groove-ophiles! The fearful (and tearful) finale of Richard Corben's Child saga! (Chapter one is here, chapter two is here.) "Childhood's End" was written by Budd Lewis and first appeared in Eerie #58 (May 1974). The following scans come from Comix International #3 (Summer 1975). Get your pitchfork--and tissues!

Black and White Wednesday: "Hide and Go Mad" by Lewis, Infantino, and Simonson
Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Ya know, when Carmine Infantino was replaced as DC's publisher, he dove right back into penciling--the very talent that had made him a comicbook legend. Marvel put him on a few books (Star Wars and Daredevil, most notably) and Jim Warren gave him plenty of work, too. It was Infantino's work at Warren that Ol' Groove really digs--mostly because of editor Louise (then Jones) Simonson's propensity for pairing the Golden-and-Silver-Age great with some of the Groovy Age's most far-out artists as inkers. Today's example, "Hide and Go Mad" (Creepy #85, November 1976) was inked by Weezie's future husband, the amazing Walt Simonson. Budd Lewis' shocker looks stunning, proving that an unlikely pairing of such different artists as Infantino and Simonson would make for some rollicking great comics! (And to up the "far-out" factor, Ol' Groove's tossing in Ken Kelly's ultra-cool cover!)

Black and White Wednesday: "Beware: The Scarlet Combine" by Lewis, Wrightson, and Chaykin
What's up, Groove-ophiles! You ready for some awesome b&w artistry? Then dig this eye-popping collaboration between Howard Chaykin and Bernie Wrightson. Two of the all-time most magnificent artists teaming up and strutting their stuff. Though the credits list Wrightson first and Chaykin second (which usually implies penciler and inker in that order), it looks more like Wrightson is inking Chaykin--but what do I know? Could be one of those totally organic collaborations with both gents doing a little'a this and a little'a that. The most important thing is that the art is dyn-o-mite! Budd Lewis's script is fun, giving Warren fans a new hero, Reuben Youngblood (sounds like Chaykin named the lad to Ol' Groove), who makes his one-and-only Groovy Age appearance (though he would appear one more time in Eerie #127 in late 1981). From Eerie #72 (cover-dated February 1976), here's "Beware: The Scarlet Combine"!
Can you say, "Far out!", baby?
