Black and White Wednesday: "A Coffin for Captain Cutlass" by Fox and Moren
Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Didja ever just sit and ponder things like..." Were there any good horror/pirate stories back in the Groovy Age?" Yeah, Ol' Groove does, too. Oh, the answer? The answer is affirmative, baby! Way back in Skywald's Psycho #3 (cover date May 1971), Golden Age Great Gardner Fox teamed with artist Serge Moren to give us just such a story, "A Coffin for Captain Cutlass." Innit outtasite?

Making a Splash: Neal Adams' Spectre
Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove knows how we are. When we think of Groovy Age Neal Adams at DC, we think Batman and Deadman. When we think The Spectre, we think (Golden Age) Bernard Baily or (Groovy Age) Jim Aparo. But what about that oh-so-short time (issues 2-5, November 1967-May 1968) Nefarious Neal drew The Spectre? Anyone who picked those mags up definitely had their minds blown, baby! The following Spectre-acular splashes simply smash any spooky, spectral images that had come sooner...see?
Can you dig it?

Groovy Age Gold: "Starman's Lucky Star!" by Fox, Meskin, and Russos
Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Man, did Ol' Groove ever love those 100 Page Super-Spectacular mags DC put out in the early 1970s. When DC applied the format to many of their regular mags in 1974, things really got cookin'! We got brand new tales of our fave DC heroes, plus tons of superior reprints from the Golden and Silver Ages. (Mebbe that's why the "multiple earths" idea never confused us--we were always being exposed to the various earths. Those reprints put things in context, y'dig?) Ahem, anyway, back to today's post! Hidden in the pages of Justice League of America #112 (April 1974) after a new JLA saga, and a rare Seven Soldiers of Victory reprint, but before a Silver Age JLA classic, we find a superb Starman story by Gardner Fox, Mort Meskin, and George Russos! Check it out!
"Starman's Lucky Star!" was originally published in Adventure Comics #71 (cover-dated December 1942).

Check it out, Groove-ophiles! Here's a supernatural pirate tale written by Golden Age great Gardner Fox and illustrated by sci-fi and fantasy master Stephen Hickman! Where, oh where, would one find such a rare and unlikely team-up of talented titans? Why, in the pages of Skywald's 1972 Psycho Annual, baby!
