CHANNING TATUM MOVIE BYTES: ‘Public Enemies’, ‘Step Up 3D’, 'Pinkville' and ‘G.I. Joe’

I found a few bits of news about Channing Tatum's films 'Public Enemies‘ , 'Step Up 3-D' (not officially his film, but news regardless), 'Pinkville', and 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' this past week. Check out today's Channing Tatum Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!

PUBLIC ENEMIES

Channing Tatum's MoviesEntertainment Weekly declared the trailer for Channing Tatum's real-life crime drama 'Public Enemies' a "must see" last week. Here's what they had to say about the highly-anticipated film...

"Hat rakishly tilted, machine gun at the ready, Johnny Depp looks like he's having a blast playing bank robber John Dillinger in the Michael Mann drama, also starring Christian Bale and Oscar winner Marion Cotillard. Between this and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, we've got two gritty period shoot-'em-ups to look forward to this year."
If you haven't seen the trailer yet, CLICK HERE to check it out now!!! Also, at Ain't It Cool News we get another couple of reviews of the film. Here's a highlight from one of the reviewers...

"Had the chance to see a very early screening of Michael Mann’s Public Enemies tonight and wanted to share some thoughts with you all. A few spoilers here so tread with caution.First off, it’s incredibly entertaining. Unlike other biopics, this one drops you right into story. No flashbacks of Johnny Dillinger extorting kids on the playground, the movie begins with Johnny Depp’s Dillinger and his crew knocking over a bank with precision and style. On the other side of the law, Christian Bale’s G-Man Purvis starts the movie hunting down Pretty Boy Floyd. It’s an interesting and welcome approach. Here’s a cop, here’s a robber. Go.

Along the way, Dillinger picks up a girlfriend (the beautiful Marion Cotillard) and Purvis is appointed the head of the task force by J Edgar Hoover (a more clothed, and less blue Billy Crudup.) The next two plus hours is basically focused on Dillinger and how he made his name. As I mentioned, I found it very entertaining...70% of the movie is Dillinger robbing, shooting, and charming his way across Iowa and Illinois."
'Public Enemies' is set to hit US theaters on July 1, 2009.

STEP UP 3-D

Channing Tatum's MoviesI knew that watching all of those episodes of Scoobie Doo, Matlock, and Murder She Wrote would pay off one day. I was able to crack the case of the un-named dance movie that director Jon M. Chu mentions in a video he released on his Youtube channel last week. Here's how I broke the case wide open (as they say)...

Via a tweet from Production Weekly last month, I learned that 'Step Up 3-D' is scheduled to start filming in May in New York City. Since we know that 'Step Up 2: The Streets' director Jon M. Chu, break out star Adam Sevani, and dancer/actress Alyson Stoner (Chan's foster sister from 'Step Up') will be returning in the third installment of the extremely popular 'Step Up' films, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that 'Step Up 3-D' is the un-named dance movie that Jon is referring to in his video. Plus, he also confirms the fact that he's currently working on his next film in New York. Honestly, I really didn't even have to pull out my trusty detective kit for this one.

Jon is looking for unique dancers to audition by submitting videos via Youtube, and the deadline is this Wednesday (March 25th), so dancers should get their submissions in fast if you want a chance to be a part of 'Step Up 3-D'! You can watch Jon's video below to learn all about the auditions...

It's my understanding that 'Step Up 3-D' is supposed to hit an IMAX theater near you some time in 2010.

PINKVILLE

Channing Tatum's MoviesIn a recent MTV interview director Oliver Stone eluded to the fact that the 'Pinkville' project that Channing is slated to star in, but was postponed around the time of the infamous 2007 writer's strike, may not be as "dead" as previously thought. You can read Stone's response below that gives fans of the yet-to-be-made film a little hope...
"One project that Stone is sticking by is “Pinkville,” a feature about the 1968 My Lai massacre in Vietnam, which was set to film with Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson and Cam Gigandet until the writers’ strike interrupted development in late 2007. “‘Pinkville’ is not dead,” Stone said of what would be his fourth film about that war. “I own it. I could activate it again. I don’t know if the time is right now with the Iraq War still going on, but I love that project and it’s an important one. My Lai is a forgotten piece of history that’s crucial to remember. You never know, these things come alive.”

G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA

Channing Tatum's MoviesLast week, Channing Tatum's 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' had another screening, but this time Paramount Pictures showed a five-minute "sizzle reel" of footage to journalists, exhibitors, and executives in Sydney, Australia. Below, you can read a recap of the footage shown via the Australian movie news site Dark Horizons...

"Until now the only footage screened from the film has been the thirty-second Superbowl spot. While repeating some scenes from that, this expanded on what was shown and combined finished effects with animatics and live-action footage. The footage established the premise that an international military task force has been setup to combat global threats. The base of operations seems to be a sandy desert somewhere with one of the early effects shots showing a secret circular hangar bay door opening for an advanced Harrier-like jet to land.

Later on we see two lumps racing under the sand and disturbing a caravan of camels. The main thrust of the story in the film is that the COBRA organization have taken microscopic robot nanites, originally developed as a way to cure cancer, and have been able to reprogram them to do almost anything. A demonstration involves the launch of a missile containing some nanites that have been programmed to eat metal. The missile is fired from some sort of underwater vehicle in The Seine, it streaks across Paris and hits the Eiffel tower. The tower is eaten away, bits of the lower arches start falling off as people scatter, and the tower itself collapses.Destro (Christopher Eccleston) talks about the plan and is seen operating from COBRA's own secret base which is a huge underwater facility under the Arctic ice.

Much of the visual effects footage, albeit mostly incomplete, showed what looked like a climactic attack by GIJOE's forces against this base - think "Thunderball" meets "Seaquest" with lots of sleek looking CG submersibles attacking similar vehicles and/or the giant metal spires that make up the various wings of the facility.Another big portion of the footage is devoted to the body armor worn by the good guys. The body suit essentially covers everything but their face (which is covered in retractable glass/plastic) and is said to enhance a person's strength, speed and agility. We briefly glimpse the CG heads up display on the inside of each helmet as well.Cut to a truly bizarre scene in Paris where two people (Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans I think) in the suits are running through the streets as European luxury cars with retractable guided missile launchers built into them fire rockets at the duo. The two guys jump, flip, dive through a train, get flung off the back of a truck that gets blown up, etc. Later on there's a scene with The Baroness (Sienna Miller) on top of a a building's massive glass ceiling as Tatum's character lands on the far side. As he runs towards her, she sets off some device and the ceiling explodes upwards in a massive shower of glass that sends him tumbling.

While we glimpse Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow in the footage a few times, there was no sign or even hint of Cobra Commander as far as I can recall."

'G.I. Joe' is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7,2009. For all of the movies in this post, you can go to the CTU Calendar to get the current list of international release dates.

Channing Tatum Movie News: Oliver Stone Update for 'Pinkville' and New Casting Call for 'Dear John'

PINKVILLE

As I mentioned before, Channing was scheduled to start filming ‘Pinkville‘ with Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone last November until the production was put on hold by the studio, supposedly because of the writer’s strike. Recently, rumors had been floating around that the film may be on again. Based on an interview Oliver Stone just did for GQ magazine, I think there may be very little truth to the rumors.

In the interview snippet below, you can clearly see that Oliver Stone is pulling no punches when he explains exactly why ‘Pinkville‘ was canceled and in my opinion, gives fans little hope that it's going to resurface any time soon:
Is the My Lai massacre movie you were making before W. dead?
Pinkville? It can probably only come back if UA would give us the movie without paying them the money they’ve already spent. We started to make the movie. I mean, we built a whole village in Thailand! We have tons of stuff sitting in crates! There’s $6 million against the movie. And I don’t have that kind of money. They didn’t even pay all the bills. They stuck us with a bunch of them.

Is your sense that they got cold feet on the project and used the writers’ strike as the excuse?
Yes, of course that’s what happened. First they kept cutting our budget. We had our locations, we had our actors, we had everything picked out, and it was a very reasonable plan. Then Bruce Willis walked, and they were thrilled, because that gave them the final excuse to call it, even though we got Nicholas Cage. That was three weeks before shooting and right before Christmas. Let me remind you, that’s 120 Americans and 500 Thais put out of work right before Christmas. It was a cruel, heartless decision, and it was probably made because [UA’s] Lions for Lambs was perceived as a mess, a failure, and we were linked to these Iraq movies that weren’t working. The irony, of course, is that Pinkville is only about Iraq in a Holy Ghost–type way. It’s about the roots of Iraq, without being too close to it. It’s not a war movie. It’s JFK meets Platoon. It was about an investigation into the past and how the nature or man covers up evil. And I have UA going on and on about “Do the bad guys have to be Americans?” [CLICK HERE TO READ MORE]

It's already extremely difficult to get a movie made, and the obstacles that ‘Pinkville‘ is currently encountering can make it down right impossible. Although Stone did not close the door on the project, it's clear that there's definitely some unresolved issues that could cause the film to sadly not see the light of day for a long while. It's safe to say that I should probably keep this one in the "On Hold" category for now. :-(

On to happier movie news...

Based on one of the most incendiary political uprisings in a generation, 'Battle In Seattle' takes an in-depth look at the five days that rocked the world in 1999 as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in protest on the World Trade Organization. What began as a peaceful protest intended to stop the WTO talks quickly escalated into a full-scale riot and eventual State of Emergency that squared off the protesters against the Seattle Police Department and the National Guard.

Public Enemies

A journalist who played as as extra in Channing Tatum's 2009 drama 'Public Enemies', where Chan plays the doomed 1930's bank robber Pretty Boy Floyd, recently gave us some new info on the release of the film.

It appears that there has been an official informational release sent to theaters from the studio to remind theater owners to reserve space next summer for the film. It confirms that the film will be released July 1, 2009. The reporter was told by inside sources that even though the film is still in the midst of editing, there will be enough cleaned up and pieced together footage for theater preview trailers to be ready for the Christmas holiday movie releases.

An adaptation of Brian Burrough’s book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43,” Channing's film centers on the government’s attempt to stop John Dillinger and his gang. The star-studded cast also includes Johnny Depp who plays Dillinger and Christian Bale portrays the famed FBI agent Melvin Purvis.

G. I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Poster of Channing Tatum as Duke Hauser in 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra'Channing Tatum will play the lead role of Duke Hauser in what MTV has declared to be one of the most anticipated movies for summer of 2009, and I know that fans are definitely looking forward to seeing Chan flex his super hero chops in the big-budget, action film 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra'.

They wrapped filming in on the movie in the Czech Republic in June and not too long after one of the crew members posted his impressions of Channing on one of the IMDB messages boards. If you want to get an idea of what it's like to work with Channing on set, read below...

"So I did a little work on GI Joe, and I have to say it was really refreshing just how cool and unassuming Channing was. When you work with actors often, you come to expect a certain degree of self-absorption. They're just a different breed in general--partially because they live in very different realities than the rest of the world. Channing was ALWAYS cool. He seemed like someone who knew he was in a fortunate position. He never dragged his feet coming to set, he insisted on taking care of himself, and usually had a smile on his face. Ray Park was the same way ... absolutely gifted martial artist, and completely humble. For the sake of these two guys, I hope the movie does really well, as we need more personalities like theirs in the A-list."

'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' revolves around a European-based military unit known as Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity (G.I.J.O.E.), which is a hi-tech, international force of special operatives that takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer.'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' is currently scheduled to hit US theaters on August 7th, 2009.

Pinkville

Channing was scheduled to start filming Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone's 'Pinkville' last November until the production was derailed by the writer's strike. I'm now hearing from multiple sources that the film may be back on sooner rather than later. Right now, this is just rumor, but if it turns out to be true, they will most likely have to recast some roles depending on which actors are available.

'Pinkville' is a drama about the investigation of the tragic 1968 My Lai massacre that occurred during the Vietnam war. Channing was supposed to play real-life hero Hugh Thompson, a helicopter pilot who, upon realizing what was happening below, put a stop to the killing by placing his craft between gunmen and the few villagers who were left, and telling his two shipmates to fire on the soldiers if they shot any more people. They airlifted the survivors and reported the carnage to superiors.

What's Next for Channing Tatum

Channing is scheduled to start filming his romantic drama 'Dear John' next month in South Carolina, his movie 'Fighting' will be released in January 2009, and his movie 'Parkour' will start filming early next year. You can CLICK HERE to get a complete list of Channing's past, current, and future films and watch their trailers.

FAN ENCOUNTER: Channing Tatum Hanging Out with Fans at Pre-Oscar Party

Although I don’t think Channing Tatum attended the 80th Annual Academy Awards ceremony, thanks to Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Hilarry we now know that he scored an invite to the star-studded Pre-Oscar party thrown at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Saturday night.

And being the fan friendly celebrity that Chan is, he was more than willing to take this photo with Hilarry and her friend Jaimi.

Below you will notice that I kept most of Hilarry's story and highlighted the Channing parts. Her celebrity encounters that night were pretty amazing, and I thought you all might enjoy reading it. Here’s how it all went down…

"...Later that night, we decided to go to the Beverly Hills Hotel where the "Night Before" the Oscars party was being held, to see if we could spot any celebs in the lobby. I don't know what we were expecting but it exceeded our wildest dreams!

We didn't even think we would be able to get in but we just waltzed right up the red carpet and into the hotel! It was so crazy. There were obviously no paps there and there were only a few other people in the lobby who were not celebs! We were kind of standing around in the lobby for a minute or two when we realized we were standing next to Cher! Random! Within 5 minutes, GEORGE CLOONEY walked right by us!! A minute or so after that, JENNIFER ANISTON and ORLANDO BLOOM walked by!!! When I say walked by, I mean within 5 feet of us! Seriously! We made Jaimi take notes of everyone we saw on her blackberry and the final list is 68 people long!!

Most of the celebs we saw were totally A-List....P.Diddy, Steven Spielberg, Cameron Diaz, Meg Ryan, Will Smith, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, Josh Groban, and the list goes on and on! Really, it does! Click here to read the entire list.
So many of the celebrities were totally cool! Cameron Diaz said hi to us, Katherine McPhee gave us her swag bag, Channing Tatum who I love more than life, stopped to talk and introduce himself to us, Ricki Lake said "Hi honey!" to me, Dave Annable from Brothers and Sisters high-fived us, Josh Groban asked us how we were doing, and John Krasinski from the Office took a picture with me!! I totally interrupted John Krasinski talking to Laura Dern and Ben Lee! It was so tacky, I know, but he is the ultimate for me! I had to! I begged Scott to go with me and take my picture. He was SOOOOOO nice and really friendly! He was definitely the coolest celeb I have ever met.

I wish I had more pictures but it was a private party and we were attempting to be discreet. I was good up until Channing Tatum. There was no chance at being discreet at that point! Seriously, it's so crazy....John Krasinski and Channing Tatum are my favorites ever and I totally got to meet them both!

Jaimi and I with Channing Tatum....my face says it all. Hilarious, huh? I was freaking out!! A security guy came over to tell us we couldn't take pictures and Channing shoo'ed him away! I told Channing I saw Step Up 8 times in the theater! I think he was impressed...or scared ;)...
"

If you’ve been reading CTU for a while, then you know that this type of behavior is Chan’s M.O.. In a nutshell, that’s why Chan’s fans love him so much. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a star that is as cool with his fans as Chan (no matter where he is or what time of day it is) and that’s the #1 reason why I started and love doing Channing Tatum Unwrapped.

Although Channing was not at this year’s Oscars (as far as I know), I have no doubts we’ll be seeing him at future events. What you may or may not know is that Channing’s current and upcoming projects are chalk full of Oscar nominees and winners.

Here’s a run down of some of the talented directors, actors and producers that Channing is currently working with or will be working with in the future:

  • Scott Rudin – This uber producer’s film ‘No Country for Old Men’ just won Best Motion Picture of the Year at the 2008 Oscars. He has won another 4 awards (including an Emmy) and has 12 other nominations for various awards. Scott is also a producer on Channing Tatum’s highly anticipated film ‘Stop-Loss’, which releases March 28, 2008 and is already getting Oscar buzz for 2009.

  • Marion Cotillard - This actress just won an Oscar at Sunday’s ceremony for Best Actress for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in 'La Mome'. She has won 19 other awards and also has 9 nominations under her belt and will next be working with Channing in his 2009 crime drama ‘Public Enemies’.

  • Johnny Depp – This extremely popular actor has accumulated 3 Oscar nominations, 36 awards (includes a Golden Globe), and 34 additional nominations during his successful career. Channing will also be working with him on ‘Public Enemies’ when they start filming in Illinois and Wisconsin in March 2008.

  • Terrence Howard – This actor was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2005’s 'Hustle & Flow'. He has had 18 other wins and 28 nominations and can be seen in Channing Tatum’s action drama ‘Fighting’ that is set to release this summer.

  • Michael Mann – This well-known director, producer, and writer has been nominated for 4 Oscars, won numerous Emmys, and has had another 15 wins and 19 nominations during his career. Mann chose Channing for his new role of Duke Hauser in 2009’s ‘G.I. Joe’, a movie that Chan is currently filming in California.

  • Oliver Stone – This well-respected director, producer, and writer has 3 Oscars, 36 other wins, and 34 nominations on his long pedigree and chose Channing to play hero Hugh Thompson in his war drama ‘Pinkville’. Although this film has been postponed, it's postponement has allowed Channing to do both ‘G.I. Joe’ and ‘Public Enemies’, so alls well that ends well.
Working with the above list of award-heavy directors, actors, and producers would be awesome for any actor, much less one that just burst on to the scene a short while ago. As a matter of a fact, most actors would give their left arm to work with almost anyone on that list and Channing has been given the rare opportunity to work with all of them.

Finally, I would like to give a BIG thanks to Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Hilarry for the awesome story and CTU Reader Hannah for telling me about this fan encounter!!!

NEWS FLASH: Director Oliver Stone's Take on Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville'

Variety is reporting that Oliver Stone (Oscar-winning director of Channing Tatum's postponed Vietnam war drama 'Pinkville') is now moving on to a new project called 'Bush'.

It's a movie focusing on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, and Josh Brolin is currently slated to star in the film.

So what does this new development mean for Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville'?

Here's what Stone had to say about why the project was postponed, how he felt about the cast, and what he feels about the future of the movie...

"...Stone said his NYU classmate Weiser did a lot of research as they worked for more than a year on the project before setting the script aside when Stone committed to "Pinkville." While UA partners Paula Wagner and Tom Cruise said they pulled the plug on that movie because of the WGA strike, Stone seemed to support widespread speculation that the strike was an excuse to kill another war-themed movie that UA was wary of making after its first release, "Lions for Lambs," flopped.

"On 'Pinkville,' I had a great script and one of the best casts on any of my films, with 40 young actors and Bruce Willis," Stone said. "It's a shame they lost faith in the film, and that they unemployed 500 people right before Christmas. We were three weeks from shooting."

Stone hopes to get his script back so he can revive "Pinkville" down the line..."

Since this new film's script is already written, it's not affected by the ongoing writer's strike that partially caused 'Pinkville' to get postponed. If they are able to get financing quickly enough, 'Bush' could start production as early as April and could be in theaters for the next US election or the inauguration of the new President.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed that Stone is able to get his script back so he can possibly get 'Pinkville' made at some point in the future.

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville' Still on Hold After Studio Strikes Landmark Deal with Writer's Guild

I've had a lot of readers ask me about the status of Channing Tatum's Oliver Stone directed Vietnam war drama 'Pinkville' where he is set to play the real-life, heroic helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson.

In case you don't already know, Channing was supposed to start filming 'Pinkville' this past December in Chiang Mai, Thailand with Woody Harrelson and Bruce Willis, but the film was put in turnaround (aka put on hold) by United Artists (UA), the studio funding the film, because of the ongoing writer's strike.

They said the script still needed adjustments and that guild members Oliver Stone (director/producer) and Mikko Alanne (screenplay writer) chose not to cross the picket line to make the required changes to the script. When the film was postponed in November, unnamed sources were also saying that the movie was put on hold because Bruce Willis signed on to another project.

Today the announcement was made that United Artists has penned a deal with the Writer's Guild of America (WGA) that allows guild members to now work on UA projects. This extremely important development means that projects like 'Pinkville' could get the green light again, but sadly, insiders are saying that is not in the cards for the film. With the strike-induced exit of Bruce Willis in the title role and possibly other actors in supporting roles, 'Pinkville' will most likely remain in turnaround until parts can be recast.

Although Stone is reportedly telling the actors not to give up on the film and that he still wants to make it this year, the movie is officially on hold...for now, but luckily in Hollywood things can change on a dime.

Working with three-time Oscar winning director Oliver Stone will be an incredible opportunity for Channing, so let's all keep our fingers crossed that 'Pinkville' gets a second chance at life sooner rather than later.

NEWS FLASH: Is Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville' More Than Just a Casualty of the Writer's Strike?

If I've learned anything over the past year from doing this blog, I've learned that the movie-making business is one of the most fragile things I've ever seen in my life. From scheduling conflicts to unpredictable actors to unresolved writer's strikes, it's seems to take an act of Congress to get a movie made these days.

If you've been reading CTU for the past couple of weeks, you know that Channing Tatum's movie 'Pinkville' announced they were postponing filming because of the writer's strike. IMBD has actually been buzzing since this announcement with people close to the production saying that there may be a little more to the cancellation story.

Since many of these sources were people upset about the production shutting down, I held off writing about what I was hearing, because I wanted to get the information from a more reliable industry source first. Then yesterday came the Variety article below that seems to confirm a lot of what I've been hearing.

You can read a snippet of the entire article below to see some additional reasons why it sadly may be a while before 'Pinkville' comes to a theater near any of us....

Hollywood's New Scapegoat
Strike allows some to bail out of projects
By ANNE THOMPSON
Posted: Thurs., Nov. 29, 2007, 7:43pm PT

During the best of times, movies heading toward production are fragile chemical equations. Add a writers' strike to that mix and things were bound to explode. "It's tough enough to get things right," says one senior agent. "This difficult situation makes it even more difficult. If something is risky it's always the first casualty, whether there's a strike or anything else."

So it was no surprise when five volatile go-projects fell apart last week: Sony pulled the February start for Ron Howard's "Da Vinci Code" sequel "Angels & Demons," starring Tom Hanks; United Artists shut down Oliver Stone's November starter "Pinkville," an investigation into the My Lai massacre starring Bruce Willis; Warner Bros. pushed back Mira Nair's Indian epic "Shantaram," starring Johnny Depp; Weinstein Co. postponed "Nine," Rob Marshall's screen adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by Fellini's "8 ½"; and when Brad Pitt pulled out of Kevin Macdonald's political thriller "State of Play," Universal threatened to sue.

Players involved in all five pics cited striking writers as a key factor in scuttling the projects. But while the strike certainly made things more vexing, there were also other forces at play. The strike offers studios, filmmakers and movie stars a smokescreen for doing just what they want to do, with a convenient scapegoat.

"It's a get-out-of-jail-free card," says one producer.

Over the past six months the looming writers' strike (with potential director and actor walkouts threatened in July 2008), pushed the studios to announce a raft of green lights sooner than they would have under normal circumstances. Stars jostled for position on projects lined up for takeoff like planes at LaGuardia. But many of those commitments seem less firm than if writers were available to make changes.

Take Stone's "Pinkville." The Vietnam era movie was just three weeks away from principal photography on Dec. 10, with complex sets built in Thailand and a large cast led by Bruce Willis prepping to fly to Southeast Asia, when UA chief Paula Wagner shut it down. She cites WGA member Stone's habitual script-tinkering throughout shooting as the main reason for not being able to proceed. Not being able to write during a strike "violates his process," she says. But the script, by Stone and Mikko Alanne, had been locked down enough to get the movie to the verge of shooting.

It was Willis who had made the film's financing possible by taking a fraction of his normal fee. And it was Willis who walked away, saying that the script was only 90% there, and booked another, more commercial, film with a bigger payday, Jonathan Mostow's "The Surrogates," originally ready to go in March, now set for February for Touchstone Pictures. Some parties say there was a "scheduling issue," while others insist that the two movies could have gone back to back.

Stone is repped by CAA partner Rick Nicita, who is married to Wagner. Obviously, UA had initially wanted to work with the filmmaker. But today's harsh box office climate for political war films makes it likely that in the wake of Robert Redford and UA co-head Tom Cruise's disastrous political screed "Lions for Lambs," Willis's withdrawal gave UA an excuse to shut down a commercially risky film. It is improbable that "Pinkville," even with "Platoon" director Stone attached, will get made anytime soon. Encumbered by several million dollars in costs, it needs another star to save it....(click here to read more)

So what have we learned?

First of all, don't underestimate the gossip mongers on IMDB. A lot of industry insiders hang out on that site, and you'll be surprised what you can learn. Of course you should ALWAYS take anything you read on the internet with a grain of salt (including this blog).

Secondly, 'Pinkville' may be a casualty of more than just the writer's strike, but let's all just hope the Tinseltown gods will smile upon us and somehow the movie will still get made (assuming they resolve whatever environment and casting issues exist now).

Finally, we know that, in addition to the 4 movies that Channing has releasing next year, he also has no less than 5 other projects on his dance card, subsequently keeping himself and all of us fans pretty busy in 2008 (with or without 'Pinkville'). ;-D

NEWS FLASH: More Casting News for Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville'

Channing Tatum, Jason Behr and Cam Gigandet

Although we just learned that Channing Tatum's war drama 'Pinkville' is one of the now four films to be temporarily shelved because of the ongoing WGA writer's strike, casting information is still being released about the film, and not surprisingly, many people are already speculating on the future involvement of certain cast members with the project.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Jason Behr ('The Grudge') and Cam Gigandet ('The O.C.') have joined the cast of Oliver Stone's investigative thriller, which already includes Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, Michael Pena, Xzibit and Toby Jones. Michael Pitt is also currently in negotiations for a major role in the film.

'Pinkville', which is produced by United Artists and distributed through MGM, is based on the 1968 My Lai massacre that took place during the Vietnam War.

Behr will play Lt. Stephen Brooks, the commanding officer in charge of the American soldiers at My Lai. Gigandet is set to play Fred Widmar, a soldier who is tortured by the guilt and shame he feels after witnessing the slaughter that occurred that horrific day.

As far as possible casting issues are concerned, many are speculating that Bruce Willis may no longer be able to do this film. Variety just announced that he has signed on for a sci-fi thriller called 'The Surrogates', and the studio is planning to start filming in Boston in February.

Depending on if and when 'Pinkville' picks back up, Bruce (and possibly other members of the cast) could have a scheduling conflicts. Let's just all keep our fingers crossed that this movie happens, and the cast does not have to change too much.

As I have said before, I am especially hopeful that Channing will continue to remain a part of 'Pinkville', because I know how much he wants to do film and that it is an amazing opportunity for his career.

NEWS FLASH: Writer's Strike Causes Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville' to be Postponed

United Artists, the production company funding Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, and Woody Harrelson's Oliver Stone directed movie 'Pinkville' , announced via a press release last night that the film was being postponed due to the current Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. Making the movie the second major film casualty of the ongoing writers strike after Sony's 'Angels & Demons', the sequel to Tom Hanks movie 'Da Vinci Code'.

In case you don't know anything about the writer's strike that is currently affecting most of the US entertainment industry, here's a quick explanation of what's going on...

The writers are striking to resolve two major issues. They want to increase the amount of compensation they get from each DVD sale that includes their work and they are trying to negotiate what kind of payment (if any) they should get from the newer distribution channels like the internet, podcasting and mobile-phones.

How does the writer's strike affect you? The late-night talk shows are already in reruns and popular shows like “The Office”, "24", “Desperate Housewives”, “Ugly Betty”, "Heroes", “House” and “Grey's Anatomy” have closed shop or are about to close up shop, because they have no more scripts to film.

People like me who are addicted to these shows will have to get used to seeing reruns and we'll start seeing more unscripted reality and game shows to fill the void. More importantly, people who work on the shows are getting laid off in many cases when the shows shut down for too long.

You can read the press release below to see how the writer's strike is now affecting Channing's upcoming film 'Pinkville' ...

UA Postpones Production of Stone's 'Pinkville'
Friday November 16, 11:00 pm ET

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- United Artists announced today that as a result of the writers' strike, it is postponing production of the Oliver Stone project "Pinkville" starring Bruce Willis. The studio said that because of the ongoing labor action by the Writers Guild of America, neither Stone nor screenwriter Mikko Alanne, both of whom are members of the WGA, can work on the script revisions needed to get the film ready for production. Mr. Stone, Mr. Allane, and Mr. Willis are all completely supportive of this decision.

Because I find the entertainment industry interesting as a whole, I've been following the writer's strike since it started a couple of weeks ago. None of our favorite scripted shows and movies would ever exist without the writers, so I personally hope that the strike is resolved soon and that the writers receive fair compensation for their work.

Far beyond the loss of our favorite shows and the delay in seeing our favorite movie stars on the big screen, is the plight of the production crew members (i.e. hair and make up artists, wardrobe people, camera technicians, caterers, etc.) that have become the direct casualties of the work stoppage caused by the shows and films that are shutting down.

My heart goes out to the hundreds of unnamed, behind-the-scenes production people (who don't get paid nearly as much as the writers) that are being laid off. Sadly, they will also have difficulty finding other work, because much of the industry around them is shut down. For many of them, getting this strike resolved means the difference between being able to take care of their families and losing everything they have. So again, resolving the strike quickly is of utmost importance. Rumor has it that the writers and the studios are heading back to the bargaining table on November 26, so hope may not be lost yet.

OK I'll get off my soap box now...

So what might this mean for Channing Tatum? Hopefully it means he gets to spend some quality time with friends and family during the upcoming holiday season, since he is wrapping up his current film 'Fighting' in New York and now does not have to head directly to Thailand to film 'Pinkville'. The one thing we know for sure is that Chan has plenty of upcoming projects to occupy his time, and I hope there are no scheduling conflicts for him and 'Pinkville' when the writer's strike is eventually resolved.

Honestly, Chan could probably use a healthy break at this point, because 2008 is shaping up to be the busiest year of his entire career. We can all look forward to as many as 4 movie releases and what seems like an endless list of movies he is supposed to film.

Luckily for us fans the writers strike should not effect Chan's movies that are already in the can, as they say, for 2008. So be on the lookout for his cameo in 'Step Up 2: The Streets' (February 14, 2008), his major roles in 'Battle in Seattle' (March 2008) and 'Stop-Loss' (March 28, 2008), and 'Fighting' is scheduled to also release some time in 2008. Strike or not, it's business as usual for the extremely busy Mr.Tatum.

NEWS FLASH: Rapper Xzibit Joins Channing Tatum in Oliver Stone's 'Pinkville'

HollywoodReporter.com is saying that rapper-turned-actor and MTV's "Pimp My Ride" star Xzibit (aka Alvin Nathaniel Joiner) is going to join Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson, and Michael Peña in Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone's upcoming Vietnam war drama 'Pinkville'.

As we recently learned from Channing and in a casting call for the film, 'Pinkville' is going to start filming in Thailand in the next few weeks.

The true-life war drama written by Mikko Alanne focuses on the 1968 My Lai Massacre, in which more than 500 people -- mostly women, children and the elderly -- were killed by U.S. soldiers.

Xzibit will play a soldier who is convinced he carried out his orders in a moral way and in case you don't know, Channing is playing Hugh Thompson, the heroic helicopter pilot that put a stop to the massacre.

Channing and Xzibit are both managed by the Beverly Hills-based team at Management 360 and 'Pinkville' is set to have it's theatrical release in 2008.

Cinematical.com is saying that Oliver Stone is also eying Michael Pitt to play Lt. William Calley, the Army officer who was found guilty of ordering the 1968 My Lai Massacre. Also joining the film is Toby Jones, who will portray Lt. Andre Feher, the chief warrant officer who tries to convince Willis' character, Gen. William Peers, that the U.S. Army is responsible for the massacre.

With the star and director power behind this film, it will definitely be one to watch and is a huge leap forward for Chan, an extremely talented actor who is quickly on the road to being a household name.

The movie will be shooting on location in THAILAND starting on December 1, 2007 for six (6) weeks. Casting agency Winsome Sinclair & Associates says that up to 50 "soldiers" from New York and Memphis will be selected for "featured extra" roles. Featured extras receive more screen time than extras. What's more, "Oliver Stone is known for giving people he likes a line, even if it's not in the script," Sinclair said.

They are specifically seeking Caucasian, African American & Latino males between the ages of 20-35 to play soldiers. Production will cover travel, room & board and per diem, and pay.

NEW YORK CASTING - Today November 10, 2007 (1PM - 6PM)

For the New York casting, Winsome Sinclair & Associates will be casting FEATURED extra roles for the new feature length film ''Pinkville''. There will be an open call for talent held on Saturday November 10, 2007 at Club Stereo 512 West 29th St. between 10th & 11th Aves. from 1pm to 6pm.

MEMPHIS CASTING - Saturday November 17, 2007 (1PM - 6PM)
For the Memphis casting, Men ages 20-50 who think they could portray a soldier in Stone's ''Pinkville'' are invited to a casting call at FedExForum from 1 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 17.

The office of U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Memphis, will also work to expedite passport processing for anyone cast in the film who doesn't have one.

Good luck!!!

NEWS FLASH: Woody Harrelson Joins Cast of Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville'

People seem to love to work with Channing Tatum so much they keep following him from movie to movie. Don't believe me? Well today's new casting announcement for Chan's upcoming film 'Pinkville' solidified that fact.

Channing Tatum, Woody Harrelson, Bruce Willis and Oliver Stone of 'Pinkville'

HollywoodReporter.com is saying that Channing's 'Battle in Seattle' co-star Woody Harrelson has now joined the cast of 'Pinkville', which already includes A-List actor Bruce Willis and three-time, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone.

Although the article below says they will start filming early next year, Chan told me that he will start working on the project towards the end of November and will be filming in Thailand for 3 months.

You can read the entire Hollywood Reporter article below to learn more about Woody Harrelson's new role in Channing's 'Pinkville'.

Cast in Stone: Harrelson to 'Pinkville'
By Carly Mayberry - Oct 25, 2007

Woody Harrelson is reteaming with Oliver Stone in the director's Vietnam War drama "Pinkville" for United Artists.

Harrelson joins Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum, who already have been cast in the mystery drama based on the infamous 1968 My Lai Massacre, in which upward of 500 people -- mostly women, children and the elderly -- were killed by U.S. soldiers. The massacre ended up being a turning point in the war.

Harrelson will play Col. Henderson, the conflicted officer in charge of the task force that committed the massacre.

Mikko Alanne wrote the script. Production is set to begin next year, with MGM distributing.

Willis will portray William R. Peers, the real-life Army general who investigated the incident. Tatum will play Hugh Thompson Jr., an Army helicopter pilot who aided the villagers and later testified against the soldiers.

Michael Pena, who appeared in Stone's "World Trade Center" and plays an Army Ranger in Afghanistan in Robert Redford's "Lions for Lambs," also has been cast.

Stone is no stranger to films set against the backdrop of Vietnam. "Pinkville" -- the title refers to a military description on the My Lai region -- accompanies the director's "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Heaven and Earth," all of which centered on the war.

Harrelson starred in Stone's "Natural Born Killers." His more recent credits include "A Prairie Home Companion" and "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio." He is repped by CAA, Tracy Harshman and attorney Steve Burkow.

What are some other examples of this phenomena of people following Chan from movie to movie?
And those examples are just off to the top of my head. I'm sure there are more. After spending the day with him and personally seeing how much the 'Fighting' cast and crew love working with Chan, I am sure we'll see plenty more of this phenomena for years to come.

NEWS FLASH: Oliver Stone Scouts Out Filming Locations for Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville' in Vietnam

Channing Tatum is supposed to start filming his Oliver Stone directed Vietnam war drama with Bruce Willis after he completes his current project 'Fighting'.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker recently visited the Vietnamese village of My Lai to research the movie about the infamous massacre there, one of the darkest chapters of the Vietnam War.

Stone actually served in the conflict and later won best director Oscars for his war dramas 'Platoon' and 'Born on the Fourth of July'. My Lai is the hamlet where US soldiers went on a bloody rampage and killed up to 504 civilians, many of them unarmed women, children and elderly, on March 16, 1968.

The local people feel that if the film is to be shot in My Lai, it would be a symbol of the US admitting their crimes in the war in Vietnam, a crime which reached the US public more than a year after the event. It sparked international outrage and played a key role in turning the American public opinion against the war in Vietnam.

Stone hopes to start shooting the movie 'Pinkville' by year's end, and I was happy to learn recently that Channing will play one of the few heros in the massacre, a brave soldier by the name of Hugh Thompson.

Hugh was a helicopter pilot who, once he realized what was happening below, put a stop to the killing by placing his craft between gunmen and the few villagers who were left. Hugh also told his two shipmates to fire on the soldiers if they shot any more people and they airlifted the survivors and reported the carnage to superiors.

'Pinkville' is slated to have a $40 million budget and is currently scheduled to have its theatrical release in 2008.

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum and Oliver Stone's 'Pinkville'...Sean Penn's Out and Bruce Willis Is In

As I reported in my project update a few days ago, Channing will be starring in Oliver Stone's Vietnam war drama 'Pinkville' after Chan completes filming his cameo in 'Step Up 2: The Streets' this summer and his untitled street fighting movie this fall.

Today's top stories on Variety.com and HollywoodReporter.com are reporting that instead of Sean Penn, it seems that veteran actor Bruce Willis has now been cast to star with Channing in 'Pinkville', which is budgeted to be around a $40 million film. Tom Cruise’s United Artists is said to be finalizing a deal with Stone to finance the movie.

This is a very cool announcement, because a $40 million budget
with Tom Cruise's UA backing the film, plus Oliver Stone, plus Bruce Willis, plus Chan (of course) may just be putting this film on the road to blockbuster status!!! :-D

Hollywood Reporter also says that an actor by the name of Michael Pena is currently in talks to play the third lead role. If all goes as planned, Channing will be filming 'Pinkville' early next year.

Here's the Variety.com article that gives all of the newest details about the movie and the heroic characters that Channing Tatum and Bruce Willis will play:

United Artists Near Deal for 'Pinkville'

Oliver Stone drama stars Bruce Willis

Oliver Stone is heading back to Vietnam.

He is closing a deal with United Artists to finance "Pinkville," a drama about the investigation of the 1968 My Lai massacre that he would direct. Pic would be distributed through MGM.

Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum will star. Mikko Alanne wrote the script.

A UA commitment could be finalized this week, putting the picture into production by early next year, with a budget of roughly $40 million.

It marks the fourth time Stone has directed a film set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, following Oscar winner "Platoon," "Heaven & Earth" and "Born on the Fourth of July." "Pinkville" also reunites the director with Tom Cruise, who starred in "Born on the Fourth of July" and who, with partner Paula Wagner, is now a co-owner of UA.

Willis will play Army Gen. William R. Peers, who supervised the investigation into the massacre by U.S. soldiers of as many as 500 My Lai villagers, most of them unarmed women, children and elderly.

Tatum will play Hugh Thompson, a helicopter pilot who, upon realizing what was happening below, put a stop to the killing by placing his craft between gunmen and the few villagers who were left, and telling his two shipmates to fire on the soldiers if they shot any more people. They airlifted the survivors and reported the carnage to superiors.

Pinkville is the description on a military map for the region where My Lai is.

Stone had been expected to follow "World Trade Center" with a drama about the CIA's attempt to catch Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan after 9/11.

Instead, he will tackle "Pinkville," which is set up as a mystery but explores the themes of barbarism and heroism. Thompson was initially excoriated for his actions, while Peers' revelation of one of the most atrocious acts in U.S. military history (and subsequent military cover-up) helped galvanize opposition to the war.

Alanne, who wrote and directed the 1997 docu "Voice of Dissent" about the LAPD and the murder of Sen. Robert Kennedy, most recently scripted "Notorious," about the killings of rappers Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur.

CTU EXCLUSIVE NEWS: Channing Tatum Project Update...Chan Will 'Fight' and 'Step Up 2', But Won't 'Push'

One of my goals once CTU became Channing Tatum's official site was to get an accurate list of upcoming projects to the fans.

In the crazy movie business it's very difficult to juggle schedules, so projects will be announced with actors tied to them and then often, scheduling conflicts or other factors will make that cast list change prior to the start of filming. We've already seen this happen recently with Channing Tatum and the ill-fated 'Poor Things' project that was delayed by Lindsay Lohan and other production factors.

Well it seems that the scheduling conflict issues have reared their ugly head again, but since CTU is now Channing's official site (Sorry I can't seem to stop saying that. I promise it'll wear off soon...maybe :-P ), I can get the low-down on what projects Channing is actually going to be working on. Mind you, things happen and could change, but here is what Channing's camp is telling me now...

As I previously posted, Channing Tatum is scheduled to start filming his untitled underground street fighting movie with Oscar nominated actor Terrence Howard and director Dito Montiel next month. He is currently meeting with both of them in New York where his girlfriend Jenna Dewan also happens to be filming her most recent project. That's why we were able to see our favorite couple together at Butter earlier this week in New York. I'm sure they'll be happy that they get to work near each other.

Channing's previously announced project 'Push' also starts filming in Hong Kong next month, which is where the scheduling conflict comes in. Although Channing has a list of skills as long as my arm, he has yet to master the difficult talent of being in two places at one time. Now once that whole replication thing is perfected, I'm thinking there's a market for Channing clones.

OK back to reality...

His camp is telling me that the fighting movie has beat out 'Push' in the scheduling wars, which means that Channing will remain stateside and will hopefully be filming in New York.

Even more exciting is that they confirmed Channing's cameo in 'Step Up 2: The Streets' is still on his schedule, so fans can now breath a sigh of relief and rejoice in the fact that we will once again see Chan in a 'Step Up' film. YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Finally, I am told that his next project will probably be the Oliver Stone directed Vietnam movie 'Pinkville' where Channing is set to co-star with Oscar & Golden Globe winner and veteran actor Sean Penn. From the director with three Oscars to the Oscar winning co-star, a film with that kind of pedigree is an amazing opportunity for Channing and his career. I am so happy that he has been cast in this film and being cast in it is a shining example of how Hollywood feels about Channing and his abilities.

So that's it's for now. I will update all of the upcoming projects on the blog to reflect what I've told you above and stay tuned to Channing Tatum Unwrapped for daily news on what's going on in Chan's world!
