NEWS FLASH: Watch Jenna Dewan's 'Falling Awake' at the Brooklyn International Film Festival

Poster for Jenna Dewan's 'Falling Awake'I'm just learning that Jenna Dewan's new dramatic film 'Falling Awake', which was previously called 'Shine On', screened at the Boston International Film Festival on April 24th, the same day that Channing Tatum's film 'Fighting' hit theaters.

Even though fans may have missed that screening, you'll have another opportunity to see the film at the 2009 Brooklyn International Film Festival this weekend and in limited release in theaters later this year.

Here's the synopsis for the film...

"'Falling Awake' is the powerful story of Jay (Andrew Cisneros), a young man struggling to find his identity in The Bronx in a house crowded with family members and a neighborhood filled with loyal friends and dangerous enemies. A gifted musician, Jay hopes to leave it all and pursue his dream of composing and performing music. Once he meets Alessandra (Jenna Dewan), a beautiful young woman who lives in Brooklyn, his determination to defy the expectations of his frustrated, angry father become even stronger.

Jay is tied to his home through loyalty to his friends and to his brother, who has returned unexpectedly from service in the Marines. As he reaches toward a wider world, he is pulled back over and over by the cycles of anger and violence that have defined his life and neighborhood for so long. It takes love, a change of heart and a new understanding of life's elusive chance at happiness to finally help Jay make the long, uncertain leap to a fresh chance."

Below you buy tickets to see the film at the Brooklyn International Film Festival:

You can also check out Jenna in the powerful new trailer for the film below:

We had an amazing experience making this movie and I hope audiences will feel the emotion and truth in it when they see the film."

After screening at various films festivals, 'Falling Awake' will be released in select theaters in New York City, Miami and Puerto Rico this September.

NEWS FLASH: Film Festival Premiere and DVD Release for Channing Tatum's 'Stop-Loss'

Recently I let you all know that the Australian release date for Channing Tatum's drama 'Stop-Loss' was pushed out to August 14, 2008. For those disappointed Aussies that were looking forward to the initial May release of the film, I have some great news.

Prior to the nationwide release of the film, 'Stop-Loss' will have its Australian premiere at the 55th annual Sydney Film Festival which runs from June 4 - 22, 2008.

The Sydney Film Festival screens feature films, documentaries, short films and animations across the city at the State Theatre, GU George Street Cinemas, Metro Theatre and Dendy Opera Quays. The festival is a major event on the New South Wales cultural calendar and is one of the world’s longest running film festivals.

Fans can get all of the film festival screening information for 'Stop-Loss' below:

'Stop-Loss' Update

To give everyone a quick general update on the film...

Since the release of Channing's film 'Stop-Loss', director Kimberly Peirce has been extremely busy promoting the film, winning awards, and raising awareness about the Stop-Loss policy that is impacting US soldiers serving around the world.

Variety announced that Peirce ( a 1996 gradute of Columbia University's School of the Arts' film division) received the Sarris Award during the Columbia University's Film Festival.

Named for critic and film professor Andrew Sarris, the award honors service and artistic achievement of Columbia U. alums. Sarris award recipients are selected by the school's film students. Feel free to learn more about the talented director on her official website.

Amazingly, 'Stop-Loss' has helped spark a national debate in both the entertainment and news media. So much so, that all of the presidential candidates are now addressing the Stop-Loss policy on the campaign trail.

Kimberly mentions on the film's Facebook page that Senator McCain now calls the Stop-Loss program a "back door draft", which is a term we all learned in the film. Senator Clinton is calling for the program's end, and Senator Obama has petitioned Defense Secretary Gates to end it also; Kim mentioned to me that Obama actually asked supporters on his website to see 'Stop-Loss' in theaters after she sent him a letter educating him about the policy.

With Stop-Lossed soldiers and their families in attendance, Kimberly recently addressed the National Press Club, which spurred publications and news outlets including USA Today, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and MSNBC to prominently feature stories on the Stop-Loss issue. NBC Nightly News is also about to air an extended look at the policy featuring many of the soldiers and families from the National Press Club event.

The LA Times reports that the number of soldiers affected by the military's Stop-Loss program has risen sharply since the Pentagon extended combat tours last year, so 'Stop-Loss' is no longer just a film; it is now an integral part of a movement with the goal of ending a controversial policy that forces our soldiers to remain in the Army involuntarily.

Kimberly Peirce has also confirmed that the 'Stop-Loss' DVD will be released on or before July 22nd. I have seen release dates as early as July 8th, but I will let you all know when I have a more solid date.

'Stop-Loss' is currently scheduled to premiere in Italy next on June 6, 2008, and you can CLICK HERE to get a complete list of all of the release dates for the film around the world.

NEWS FLASH: New Poster, Trailer, Film Festival, and Nomination for Channing Tatum's 'Battle in Seattle'

MovieSet.com just let me know that the US trailer for Channing Tatum's upcoming drama 'Battle in Seattle' has now been released. They also sent me the new poster for the film, which you can see on the right.

Based on one of the most incendiary political uprisings in a generation, 'Battle in Seattle' takes an in-depth look at the five days that rocked the world in 1999 as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in protest of the World Trade Organization.

What began as a peaceful protest intended to stop the WTO talks quickly escalated into a full-scale riot and eventual State of Emergency that squared off peaceful and unarmed protesters against the Seattle Police Department and the National Guard.

You can CLICK HERE to watch the new, exclusive trailer on MovieSet.com or you can check it out below. I am happy to say that this version (unlike the French one I posted recently) does include Channing, so make sure to check it out.

In addition to the new trailer and poster, I also learned from Leigh at Michelle-Rodriguez.com that 'Battle in Seattle' is going to open the 34th annual Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). Director Stuart Townsend, Charlize Theron and Martin Henderson are all scheduled to walk the red carpet at the festival's opening-night gala at 7:30pm on May 22, 2008 at McCaw Hall in the Seattle Center.

SIFF is the largest and longest-running film festival in the country and runs from May 22 - June 15, 2008. The complete festival schedule will be announced May 8th, but you can CLICK HERE to learn more and buy tickets to the BIS screening.

Today it was also announced that 'Battle in Seattle' has been nominated for a Leo Award in the Feature Length Drama category. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday, May 24, 2008 in Vancouver, BC at the Westin Bayshore. You can CLICK HERE to see the rest of the nominees.

'Battle in Seattle' is truly an exceptional film, and I know this is just one of many nominations the movie will receive before all is said and done. If you want to learn more about the movie, you can CLICK HERE to read about my experience at the US premiere of the film at the South by Southwest film festival a few weeks ago. I have now added a new video of the Q&A with director Stuart Townsend and actor Martin Henderson to the post. You can also check out the BIS official website.

'Battle in Seattle' is set to have a theatrical release in September 2008.

REMINDER: Channing Tatum's Movie 'Battle in Seattle' Showing at Florida Film Festival

Channing Tatum's upcoming drama 'Battle in Seattle' will be having it's east coast premiere at the close of the Florida Film Festival (FFF) this week.

FFF takes place from March 28 - April 6, 2008 and 'Battle in Seattle' will be shown again at 7:00 - 8:45 PM Sunday, April 6, 2008 at the Regal theater.

You can CLICK HERE to buy tickets on the festival's website for the event for $10 each. You can also read a description of the film from the festival's website below:

BATTLE IN SEATTLE
USA, 2007,100 MIN
DIRECTED BY STUART TOWNSEND

East Coast Premiere

“Our world is not for sale” is the declaration at the heart of Irish actor and first time writer-director Stuart Townsend’s provocative and heartfelt film, Battle in Seattle. Sparked by tens of thousands protesting the 1999 World Trade Organization conference, riots in the normally laid-back Northwestern city spanned five days, and the scene eventually grew into a state of emergency. Woven together with actual footage and dramatic performances, the film showcases the events from multiple points of view including protestors, police, and city officials. Characters are drawn from those on the front lines to innocent bystanders caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The filmmaker skillfully uses an all-star cast including Oscar winner Charlize Theron, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Rodriguez, Ray Liotta, and Andre (3000) Benjamin to bring the chaotic and frightening true events to the screen. As civil liberties and global economics collide, the fights in Battle in Seattle are as relevant today as they were at the turn of the millennium.

'Battle in Seattle' is currently set to have its theatrical release in the US in September 2008. You can CLICK HERE for even more information about the upcoming film festival on their official site.

NEWS FLASH: Create Your Own Trailer for Channing Tatum’s Movie ‘Stop-Loss’

Thanks to Fabulous Channing Tatum Fans Marlie and Kerline we have a couple of photos of two larger-than-life posters for Channing Tatum’s highly-anticipated Iraq war drama ‘Stop-Loss’. They took these photos from inside and outside of the movie theater last week when they went to see Channing in ‘Step Up 2: The Streets’ in New York City.

I also wanted to let you know that ‘Stop-Loss’ has added a cool, new feature to their website that I think all of CTU’s video makers are going to love.

You can now create your very own movie trailer for the film with video, audio, transition, titles, graphics, and music provided by the makers of ‘Stop-Loss’. After you make your trailer, other visitors on the site can rate it, and you can even share it by adding your video to your MySpace page, website, and/or blog.

Want to share your video making talents with the world? Make a video and send a link to the video you made to me at votw@channingtatumunwrapped.com. I may just post it on CTU!!!

I thought I would also give you a quick update on the ‘Stop-Loss’ media/college tour that director Kimberly Peirce is currently doing to promote the film prior to it’s March 28, 2008 release. She has already attended screenings in Seattle, San Diego, Miami, and Boston. Kimberly said the following about the audiences in the cities that have already had screenings:

"SEATTLE tended to be artsy and young; SAN DIEGO was heavily military with Iraq vets and military family as well as college students; MIAMI had ROTC, a lot of people between 17-20, and was about 50% Latin; BOSTON was mostly military family, vets from other wars (WWII, Vietnam) and college students."

Lucky fans from the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, Florida International University, Sunset Senior High, Varella Sr. High, Nova High, Fergusson High, Braddock Senior High, and South Dade Senior High at the South Miami, Florida screening on February 19th got an awesome opportunity to meet Channing’s castmate Victor Rasuk. He met a lot of excited fans and signed autographs for them after the screening. After that Kimberly jumped on a plane to attend the Boston screening the very next night at the Regal Fenway Theater.

Kimberly Peirce is truly enjoying hearing the reactions and stories of screening attendees, and the extremely busy director still has Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, Houston, Dallas, Austin, LA, Philadelphia, and more on her travel plan.

Although I don’t have a complete list of screening dates, I do know that ‘Stop-Loss’ will be shown at the University of Chicago on February 27th. You can CLICK HERE for more details.

I am still hunting down location and time details for the list below, but Kimberly Peirce has said that there will be screenings in the following cities on the during the time periods specified:
  • 2/28/2008: Minneapolis
  • 3/3/2008 – 3/7/2008: Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, and LA
  • 3/11/2008 – 3/12/2008: Houston and Dallas
The movie will also be shown at the Fusion Film Festival in New York on February 28th and in Austin at the South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) on March 13th. Since I’m going to SXSW, I plan on also attending the screening of ‘Battle in Seattle' on March 10th, yet another one of Channing’s films that is scheduled for release this year.

Finally, don’t forget to check out the Sound Off section of the ‘Stop-Loss’ website where you can learn more about the movie, the real-life stories of our soldier’s and their families, and the escapades of Kimberly Peirce herself as she flies to every corner of the country to promote a movie that is near and dear to her heart.

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum's 'Battle in Seattle' Premieres in Europe at Dublin International Film Festival

For all of CTU's Irish readers, I want to let you know that Channing Tatum's upcoming drama 'Battle in Seattle' will be showing at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (JDIFF) this week.

JDIFF will take place from February 15 - 24, 2008 and 'Battle in Seattle' will be shown at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Savoy on 17 Upper O'Connell Street Dublin 1.

You can call (081) 877-6776 for additional information on the theater. You can also purchase tickets for the film on the festival's website.

Festival Director, Grainne Humpreys, recently shared his opinion of the film and had the following remarks:

“It is an incredibly powerful film with a truly important subject at its centre, and at its end – I was both angered by the story and moved to tears by the storytelling. I would hope that the festival would provide the perfect launch for the film in Europe and we are delighted that Stuart and Charlize will attend the screening and to participate in the post screening discussion.”

The film festival's website also has the following glowing review of the movie from its world premiere last year at the Toronto International Film Festival:
"The riots that confronted the World Trade Organization’s 1999 meeting in Seattle forced politically minded citizens into some tough intellectual deliberation. First there were the horrible images of smashed windows and police brutality on the news. Questions sprang up: When does a protest stop being peaceful? And what constitutes the appropriate application of law and order in such a situation? At the same time, the politics of globalisation came under the microscope. Increasingly unfettered multinational business seems to be increasing wealth in developing nations – but at what cost to the social fabric? All of these issues and more lie at the heart of Irish actor Stuart Townsend’s provocative and heartfelt debut as a director.

The film follows multiple fictional storylines about people affected by the crisis, crossing the spectrum of debate and confrontation to examine what was going on inside and outside the Seattle convention space. The film grounds the sometimes heady politics of civil liberties and global economics by focusing on people’s individual experiences of the event. While its political sympathies clearly tip toward the protestors, Battle in Seattle maintains a certain open-endedness that allows for reasoned continuing debate.

Terrific performances from a wonderful ensemble cast help the director immeasurably. Townsend’s real-life partner, Charlize Theron, is heartbreaking as Ella, the wife of a police officer, who is forced to contend with unexpected violence, finding herself on the wrong side of authority. Ray Liotta as Seattle mayor Jim Tobin and Woody Harrelson as Ella’s husband, Dale, one of the city’s SWAT-like policemen, are key figures; we watch as their ordered view of the world slowly unravels. Michelle Rodriguez, Martin Henderson and André Benjamin play the most prominent protestors, their often naive enthusiasm dulled by mass arrests and mood swings as media reports blame them for the destruction and violence. The wonderful Rade Sherbedzija provides an alternative – even ironic – perspective as Dr. Maric, who is fighting for lives in the developing world. Inside the convention centre, he defends his cause to uncaring bankers and trade representatives. His pleas become even less relevant to the room after the well-meaning protests outside become incandescent."

The festival will announce the complete schedule for feature films on February 5, 2008, and I'll let you know exact showtimes and locations for screenings for 'Battle in Seattle' and 'Stop-Loss' when they're released. For more on SXSW Film 2008, please visit their official site.

Kimberly also said that she is getting ready for the second 'Stop-Loss' college, press, and publicity tour around the county, and that the film will have a premiere in both Los Angeles, CA and New York City, New York before it has it's official theatrical release in the US on March 28, 2008. CLICK HERE to get all of the current 'Stop-Loss' release dates around the world and watch the very moving trailer.

I was already seriously thinking about going to the festival, because it's not far from where I live in Texas. Now that both of Channing's films are going to be showing, there is an even better chance that I will attend. I'll keep you all posted and maybe I'll even see a few of you there. :-D

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum's 'Battle in Seattle' Screened by New York Media and Will Show at South by Southwest

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan and CTU Reader Lisa was invited to attend a media screening in New York on January 14th for Channing Tatum's 'Battle in Seattle'. Without giving too much away, she sent me some inside scoop I could share with you all on Chan's performance in the film.

Lisa, an industry insider, attended the media-only event at a screening room in mid-town Manhattan. She said that most publicity houses set up these random screenings in the months leading up to the a movie's release to get reactions to the film. The media's reactions are important, because they often dictate the pushing up or back of the films, if things need to change in the film, which members of the cast stand out, etc..

Here's what Lisa had to say about the screening...

"The movie was pretty awesome, definitely impressed with Stuart Townsend's first go at directing. It was a true ensemble film in every sense of the word with the most screen time going to Martin Henderson/Michelle Rodriguez/Ray Liotta/Woody Harrelson/Connie Nielsen and their storylines...in the scenes that [Channing] was in he definitely stood out! He plays Johnson, this young-alpha male-gung-ho cop, who finds out pretty quickly that things aren't always black and white.

I hate to admit that I was/am pretty oblivious to the WTO and all of their dealings but the film definitely opened my eyes and made me want to research the problems/issues at hand. The best way to put it is, it resonated and stayed with me after I left the theater."

Lisa also confirmed that the film is scheduled for a May 2008 release. Also, I read that the trailer is complete and should be released soon.

For those of us who are not lucky enough to be in the media and get private invitations to see the film, we either have to wait until May to see the movie OR it was just announced yesterday that 'Battle in Seattle' will be shown at the 2008 South By Southwest Film Conference and Festival (SXSW).

SXSW, a popular Austin-based film festival that's also held in conjunction with a music festival and digital interactive festival, will run from March 7-15, 2008. If you are able to see 'Battle in Seattle' at the festival, you will get an all-star, edge-of-your-seat glimpse at the 1999 WTO demonstrations in Seattle, told from the perspective of protesters (Michelle Rodriguez, Martin Henderson, Andre Benjamin), police (Woody Harrelson, Channing Tatum), and city officials (Ray Liotta).

The festival will announce the complete schedule for feature films on February 5, 2008, and I'll let you know exact showtimes and locations for screenings. For more on SXSW Film 2008, please visit their official site.

Huge thanks to Lisa for sharing her experience at the BIS media screening with all of us!!!

NEWS FLASH: Watch Channing Tatum's 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints' at Jakarta International Film Festival

Channing Tatum's indie film 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints' will be shown at the 9th Jakarta International Film Festival (JiFFest) which runs from December 7 - 16, 2007.

JiFFest is one of South East Asia’s most exciting film festivals. In the past 3 years, it has grown and developed into a thriving festival, with a record audience of 63,000 last year. This year, JiFFest will show more than 200 films from over 30 countries in the following movie theaters: Djakarta XXI, Kineforum, Goethe Institut, Erasmus Huis, and the new Blitz Megaplex in Grand Indonesia.

Most JiFFest films are temporarily imported into the country only for the festival. After the screenings end, the films will be shipped out of the country, and you may never see them again. So this could be your only chance to see Chan in this film!

If you haven't had the opportunity to see Channing's critically-acclaimed performance as Antonio in 'Saints', you can read the review below from Kabar Magazine to see what you're missing:

“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” is the directorial debut of writer, punk-rock musician, former Calvin Klein underwear model and New York hipster, Dito Montiel. The film is based upon his memoir of the same title, about growing up in a tough New York neighbourhood and the friends he left behind. A coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up in Astoria, New York, during the 1980s. Think “Kids” meets “The Basketball Diaries”.

What makes the life of one Dito Montiel an interesting story to put on the silver screen? Well, for starters how the story was filmed is magnificently raw, dirty, no-hold-bars, anything goes, the kind of film-making and storytelling that only a handful of directors have achieved, Spike Lee being one of them.

The film is based around two narratives, the first focusing on the young Dito making his way through the poverty stricken Astoria district of New York in the 1980s, while the second has an older Dito (played by the under-appreciated Robert Downey Jr.) returning to his old stomping ground years later, coming to terms with his past and what he has left behind. This was the real thing, an evocation of life in the run-down Astoria district, told with matter-of-fact naiveté; of open-mic nights, of the transvestite Marilyns and Mansfields doing their business across the street, of trying to get laid with the girl from around the corner, of watching your best friend Antonio kill a boy with a single blow of a baseball bat. And of encountering people who, without seeming to at the time, looked after you and kept you safe from harm, your guardian saints, even while their own lives crashed and burned.

“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” won a special award for its ensemble of actors at last year’s Sundance festival, and it’s easy to see why. Shia LaBeouf gives the performance of his young career as young Dito, a sensitive, damaged kid growing up on an old neighbourhood located in Queens, New York. Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest are terrific as Dito’s parents, and Channing Tatum all but steals the movie as Antonio, his violent and doomed best friend...

'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints' is showing at JiFFest 2007 at the following dates, times, and location:

REMINDER: Channing Tatum's 'Battle in Seattle' Opens the Bahamas International Film Festival Tonight!!!

This is just a quick reminder that Channing Tatum's film 'Battle in Seattle' will be showing at the opening ceremonies of the Bahamas International Film Festival tonight.

The festival started yesterday (December 6, 2007) and will continue through December 13, 2007. In it's 4th year, the Bahamas International Film Festival will showcase 83 films from 26 countries, including 54 world or international premieres in dramatic, documentary and short film categories.

If you don't already know, 'Battle in Seattle' takes an in-depth look at the five days that rocked the world in 1999 as tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in protest of the World Trade Organization. What began as a peaceful protest intended to stop the WTO talks quickly escalated into a full-scale riot and eventual State of Emergency that squared off peaceful and unarmed protesters against the Seattle Police Department and the National Guard. In the film, Channing plays a riot cop named Johnson.

Below you can check out an article talking about the festival, and if you're lucky enough to be in the Bahamas right now, then you can get info on how you can attend the festival.

Bahamas Film Festival in Full Swing

By KARAN MINNIS, Guardian Lifestyles Reporter, karan@nasguard.com

Movie buffs are in for a treat, because after months of waiting, the Bahamas International Film Festival is off the ground and running, and with 83 films to be viewed, you need to be on vacation to take it all in. It's films, glamor, Hollywood and action, right here in The Bahamas.

BIFF began its viewings at the Galleria Cinemas, John F. Kennedy Drive, for the fourth event on Thursday, Dec. 6, and it is expected to climax on Thursday, Dec. 13.

The event is said to have transformed the local film industry single-handedly, making The Bahamas the best place to enjoy international, cultural and Bahamian films, that would not have made it to the movie theater.

"It's part award show, part fashion show, part party and full entertainment," said Festival Founder and Executive Director Leslie Vanderpool. "And that's what makes it such a great event. And we bring it all to one location — The Bahamas."

Films from 26 different countries, including 54 features of which several are world or international premieres and nearly all Bahamian premieres will be showcased. As Vanderpool says the event will be "huge."

"This year, the event will have four competition categories — Spirit of Freedom: Dramatic; Spirit of Freedom: Documentary; New Vision; and Short Film. ThinkFilm's "Battle in Seattle" will open the festival.

"We have a very elaborate Versace fashion show for the main event, and we've cut prices and expanded the length of the event," she said as they cater to the Bahamian public, expanding from four to seven days, because of the enormous growth and support they received in the past three years.

Each movie showing is just $5.00, the panels are $10.00 and the award shows are free.

Emerging superstar Naomie Harris will receive BIFF's special Rising Star Tribute, presented by offshore bank and trust company Ansbacher (Bahamas) Limited. Harris will be on hand to receive the for the special Chopard Award tribute presentation which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Aura Nightclub at the Atlantis Hotel and Resort on Paradise Island."

The Rising Star Tribute, a new addition to the film festival, is given to an actor or actress whose early accomplishments have put them on the path for elite stardom in the industry.
