Cheap patriotism.
The New Hampshire Patriot, referring to the resolutions passed by the Massachusetts Legislature, tendering the President men and money to maintain the Government in the present crisis, observes that this is very cheap patriotism, of the thinnest, kind. The authorities of that State are prompt to volunteer their aid to promote and prosecute a war against a portion of our own people; but when the country has been engaged in war with foreign nations, their conduct was just the reverse. They refused to allow their troops to aid in defence of the country in the war of 1812-14; and in the Mexican war private charity had to be solicited for means to clothe and feed her citizens who volunteered to fight the battles of the country. True patriotism would prompt that State to lend her aid to avert civil war by repealing her Personal Liberty laws and aiding in the peaceful settlement of existing difficulties.
