13+ Geeky Costume Accessories You Could Wear All Year

I've been having a lot of fun putting together our family's costumes this year...maybe a little too much fun.  Mostly I've been making the costumes myself, but almost everyone's costume has needed something a little extra to really make it come alive.

As I've been searching for things to finish off our costumes, I've come across some other fun accessories that were just too fun not to share..and are oh so wearable the rest of the year too.

One Ring to Rule them All...One Ring to GIVEAWAY - Lord of the Rings Accessory

Okay, here's something awesome for all you Lord of the Rings fans whether you're gearing up for an epic Halloween costume or are just a die hard fan.

In honor of Halloween coming up, Maile from Boutique Academia is giving away The One Ring on a gunmetal chain to one lucky Pieces by Polly reader.  This would make the perfect accessory for a Lord of the Rings themed costume, especially Frodo or Gollum, and then could be worn as regular jewelry anytime of year.  Subtle enough to look like a regular accessory, and distinctive enough to be recognized by other Lord of the Rings fans.
Or if you're thinking ahead to Christmas, this would be a perfect stocking stuffer.  And let's face it...even if you're not a Lord of the Rings fan...I know someone who is.

Maile from Boutique Academia has been a long time sponsor...simply because she makes such awesome stuff, and we also happen to be real-life friends who live in different states.  Maile specializes in making smart and artful jewelry and accessories with themes including all things math, science, and geek related.

Personally I love her pieces because they are unique and fun, and let me show my geeky side in a subtle and tasteful ways.  You might remember her Constellation necklaces I've talked about before.  (They actually inspired the way I did the stars on Eric's and Anson's Big and Little Dipper Costumes last year.)

I also love this Dark Blue Capacitor Necklace

And we can all use a little more serotonin...

And just a heads up...Mole Day is coming...and an Avogradro's Tie Bar would be perfect.

 Now for the giveaway!

New Harry Potter Themed Necklaces and GIVEAWAY

I couldn't be more pleased with how things are going with the Pieces by Polly Etsy Shop.  I just wish I'd opened it months ago!

I had some fun a week ago exploring several jewelry supply stores looking for inspiration to make a few more Harry Potter themed necklaces and Christmas ornaments.  If you've made it to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, then you'll recognize the Deathly Hallows symbol.  I've got some made into Deathly Hallows necklaces with several choices of chains...

...or for something a little more masculine, you can order a Deathly Hallows Key Chain in Gryffindor's red and gold...
...or if you think Draco should been the hero, maybe you'd prefer Slytherin green and silver Deathly Hallows key chain...

I'm still tweaking some designs a bit, but I've got some Golden Snitch necklaces

And potions necklaces with a single potion...

...or two potions...

And when I saw these large snake pendants, I just had to grab one to try a Slytherin inspired snake and potion piece.

And of course these Hedwig Owl Post Necklaces have been my most popular item, so far.

I think the letter charms will continue to be the most popular, but in preparation for Christmas, Hedwig can also deliver a gift or holly leaf.

I'm also got several Harry Potter themed Christmas Ornaments made and listed...but I feel like September is maybe a little soon to start showing those off.  You can take a peek at them here, though.

And to celebrate these new designs and my shop's success, I thought we'd have a little giveaway.  Up for grabs is a $15 gift certificate to my shop.  (That's enough to cover almost any shop item plus shipping of most of my shops pieces.)

Hedwig Necklace - For Harry Potter Fans

This post has been a long time in coming (as in the pictures have my old watermark on them)...but better late than never, eh?  I'm always on the lookout for something different, inexpensive, and easy to mail for Mother's Day since our kids have extra moms and grandmas to remember.  (Our oldest two kids are adopted in open adoptions.)  This is a little late for a Mother's Day post, but perhaps it can help someone out for Halloween or dare I say...Christmas?

Golden Snitch Necklace - Harry Potter Inspired

If you follow me on Facebook, you might remember me mentioning I'd come up with a few more Harry Potter themed projects.  Here's one of them...

This project took about 10 minutes to do...but the supplies have been waiting around for me since before Christmas.  I had the idea to make some Harry Potter themed jewelry...but I don't know all that much about making jewelry...so I just wandered around the bead making department of an awesome little craft store near my in-laws house looking for anything that I thought might work.  I found some silver colored wings and this gold, glittery bead that opens and is held together by a really strong magnet.  (Not sure if it's supposed to be a bead?  Or a really fancy clasp?  Or it was just designed to be made into snitch jewelry.)
This is more a collection of tips than an actual tutorial because I was completely making it up as I went along.

If you want to make your own, here is what you'll need:

Pi Necklace Giveaway from Boutique Academia (CLOSED)

I know, everywhere else on the craft blogs, you're seeing St. Patrick's Day and Easter crafts popping up...we'll here at Helping Little Hands we've got to get ready for Pi-Day first.  We're getting ready a little early this year, since baby #4 is coming just before Pi-Day...and to make sure you've got enough time to get ready yourself.  Never heard of Pi-Day?  It's March 14th (3-14) every year and is the day when math lovers everywhere celebrate the number Pi...as in 3.14159... or the ratio of a circle's circumference to it's diameter.

There are all sorts of ways to celebrate Pi-Day...the yummiest of which is eating some pie.  I'll be sharing some other fun ways to celebrate throughout the rest of the week (and you can check out my Pi-Day archives for things we'd done in the past), but to kick things off, we've got a giveaway!

Maile from Boutique Academia is giving away one of her beautiful Digits of Pi Necklaces.

I've shown mine off before...

...and I love that it's versatile enough to be worn with a T-shirt or a classy dress or anything in between.

If you haven't been to Boutique Academia, you should check it out.  As Maile puts it, she designs "smart-and-beautiful accessories for women in science & technology. Stuff for geeks with taste. "

There are three easy ways to enter the giveaway for one Digits of Pi Necklace.  Please leave a separate comment for each entry.  You can enter one way or all three.  You have until March 5th at midnight to enter.  Then we'll select one random winner, and you should receive your necklace in time to wear it for Pi Day.  (If you live outside of the US, you can definitely enter...but it might not arrive in time depending on shipping times.)
  • Become a follower of Helping Little Hands via GFC or Facebook.  (Or if you already are a follower just tell me in your comment.)
  • Head over to Boutique Academia and check out Maile's shop.  Then come back here and tell us what your favorite product is.
  • "Like" Boutique Academia on Facebook and come back here and leave a comment.
Thanks so much for entering!  And be sure to stop by the rest of the week for more fun with Pi.
