This project took about 10 minutes to do...but the supplies have been waiting around for me since before Christmas. I had the idea to make some Harry Potter themed jewelry...but I don't know all that much about making jewelry...so I just wandered around the bead making department of an awesome little craft store near my in-laws house looking for anything that I thought might work. I found some silver colored wings and this gold, glittery bead that opens and is held together by a really strong magnet. (Not sure if it's supposed to be a bead? Or a really fancy clasp? Or it was just designed to be made into snitch jewelry.)
This is more a collection of tips than an actual tutorial because I was completely making it up as I went along.
If you want to make your own, here is what you'll need:
1 magnetic golden ball bead.
2 silver wings
4 ring things (I think they're called findings...but "findings" means SO many different things.
1 chain or cord with things on the end to attach your rings to.
Needle-nosed pliers to put the findings on.
The silver wings I bought already had a hole in them at the base. I had to use the 1/16th inch drill bit and drill the hole in the tip. I wasn't able to take a picture while I was doing it, but the set up I used looked something like what I was doing here with the owl (which might give you a clue about an upcoming project)...the wing on top of a block of scrap wood, so the drill bit would go into the wood after going through the wing.
This necklace will work best if the cord/chain is fairly short...just slightly roomier than a choker. The gold bead is pretty heavy, so if there's much extra length in there the wings don't stay spread very well. My cord was a little long for Katie, so I put a little knot in the back to shorten it until I get around to shortening it the right way.
The only problem I'm having right now is that I only bought one of those magnetic beads...and all the kids including Seth, think a necklace that comes apart and goes back together with a magnet is just the coolest thing ever...and the fact that it's a snitch is just icing on the cake.
Becca has always loved Hermione and Ginny...and she decided Ginny was even cooler when she heard that Ginny likes to catch snitches just like Harry. So I guess I need to go look for some more of these beads next time I'm at my in-laws.
And now if you don't feel up to gathering the supplies and making one, Snitch necklaces are now available in my shop.
See these links for more details about other Harry Potter themed crafts we've done...and be sure to check back because I'll be adding more as I get them written up.

Ooh, I want one, too. :) This is a very cool project. I wouldn't have thought of drilling the extra holes. Thanks for the tips!

Hi! This project is wonderful! Is the center piece 16mm? Or 8 mm?
ReplyDeleteIt's a little over half an inch...so I'd go with the 16mm option. The wings are a little over an inch, which I believe is somewhere around 28-30mm. Good luck!
DeleteOh, and how long are the wings? I have to purchase all materials online, so I can't compare the pieces. Many thanks!
