Living the dream
A summerhouse in the archipelago is a dream for a lot of people. Someone at Korsholmen at Dalarö is living it. As seen from the lookout point at Lotsberget.

A Seaside Resort
The view from the top of the Lotsberget hill at Dalarö in Haninge. It started out as a maritime pilot and customs community. The big building to the left in the top photo is the Hotel Bellevue at Wallinvägen. Built back in 1884 by Alf Wallander, who lived there for a few years. He invited many famous artists to his home, including Anders Zorn, August Strindberg, and Bruno Liljefors. A few years after his death the building became a popular hotel. After the hotel business, it was remade into a recreational home. The current owner is planning to convert the old building into apartments. There are two hills at Dalarö with spectacular views towards the archipelago. This one is called Lotsberget, translated that would mean the maritime pilot hill. The other hill is called Amerikaberget, and that's where the customs people kept an eye on arrivals back in the day. That name, The America Hill came after a local who spent a few years in the US, and when he came back they nicknamed him "Jänken", or the Yank. He lived in a house at the hill, the house was of course called Nordamerika, North America.

Babels Torn
Very picturesque villa at Dalarö. I could move in tomorrow. It is called Babels torn. It is a four storey high building, although that is tricky to see from this angle. The house was built a century ago by Carl Carlsson who also built another house, (second photo), where he had a department store for many years, Carl Carlssons Diverseaffär. Today that building houses a popular eatery called Restaurang Ankaret. Facts provided by Lars Palmgren, via Sune Nilsson two members of the local historical society Haninge Hembygdsgille.

Jutholmen
The view from Amerikaberget at Dalarö is a good one. You can see a lot of water, boats and ferries crossing the bay, and also this little islet, it is called Jutholmen. In total there are 19 building on the islet, and at least, (4), people live here year round.

A bit of jazz and soul music
We celebrated our national day today. I visited the seaside resort Dalarö with my brother and a friend. We stopped at Tullhuset down by the harbour. The building dates back to 1778. It is a listed building that back in the day was used as a customs office. Today you will find the tourist information center here, as well as popular restaurant. During our visit the singer Cecilia R. Ray was performing in the afternoon sunshine helped by the keyboard player Frank Rönningen.

Towers and gazebos
Here are a couple of interesting architectural details that I noticed during my recent promenade around Dalarö. There are lots of pretty gazebos, unusual towers and what have you there.

Seaside Living
I wouldn't mind living here. Close to the water at Dalarö. But I don't have the money for that. The crane in the photo stands near one of the more impressing mansions at Dalarö where they are currently building 13 new villas, with a couple of apartments in each, 51 in total. Maybe I should have look see and check out how much those are, they are showing the houses on Sunday. If you speak the local lingo and are interested in an apartment check out the builders web site.

Swiss chalet style
The seaside resort Dalarö in Haninge is famous for a few different things. Many prominent people lived and worked here a Century ago, including August Strindberg, Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson. But what I like the most are the many Swiss chalet style villas from that same period and here are three examples.

Tillda Uttermans café
I took a walk at the seaside resort Dalarö today together with my brother. We were at Dalarö to visit our mother who lives at the care facility Malmgården, and as the mother decided that it was time for an afternoon nap we decided to go for a walk. This is a little red cottage at the corner of Frejavägen and Wallinvägen. Today a private residence but back in 1893 this was Tillda Uttermans café. Not sure about the spelling as I found it spelled both Tillda and Tilda.

Care facility
My mother's health is deteriorating. She's been hospitalised for ten days now and everyone agrees that she will not be able to return home. Instead she will move in here at the Malmgården care facility at the seaside resort Dalarö in Haninge. My brother and I visited last week and it looked fine. She will be moved there as early as tomorrow so we will be busy fixing her new apartment.

Swedish Sea Rescue Society
The Swedish Sea Rescue Society station at the seaside resort Dalarö is quite new, it opened in 2003. They have seven vessels here, although you can't see more than one of them here! You can read more about their work in English here if you are interested.

The symbol of Dalarö
At the Dalarö square, next to the fruit stand you will find this artwork. It's the symbol of the seaside resort Dalarö. Called Krabbstenen. Made by the artist Bo Tilliander. A "crab stone" was used as an anchor, and as a fishing tool used to secure the lobster trap with.

The smallest island?
This is Jutholmen. One of the smallest islands if not the smallest in Sweden. But statisticly one of the most densely populated. A must visit for every Islomaniac. Jutholmen is situated at Dalarö, a seaside resort in the Haninge archipelago. I know that there are a few sunken ships near here, so it's popular with divers. A few known historical facts. Five hundred years ago the first maritime pilots at Dalarö used to live here. There was an Inn here 200 years ago. In 1862 a British vessel, the Trafalgar run aground here. And in 1905 so did the German battle ships Kaiser Wilhelm, Kaiser Friedrich and Brandenburg. I'm guessing that the people that own property here use them as summer houses these days.

The Prince
This is Mikael Trolin. But his friends call him The Prince. That's because he is a Prince. His dad is King of Kwande an emirate in Nigeria. His mother is an artist and this week Mikael is in charge of an art installation in the garden at Tullhuset in Dalarö and that's were I met him yesterday. Here is a photo from the installation with an interesting story. Mikael lives here at Dalarö. He is a musician and has released a few songs. Off and on he works as a music teacher. Mikael has four kids. He is also a politician in the Stockholm county council. He is a member of the Liberal Party. If you understand Swedish you can read The Prince's blog here.
This is my 63th photo for the 100 Strangers project. You can see the rest of my strangers in my Set.
