New Year's Eve Celebrations 2008-2009: Morris County NJ Continues the First Night Tradition

Twenty years ago, during my first holiday season after graduating from college, I went up to Boston to visit one of my best high school girlfriends, Grey Hound, and learned about Boston's tradition for celebrating New Year's Eve. Even though it is technically the last night of the old year, Bostonians call their celebration "First Night." First Night is an outdoor artistic and cultural celebration on New Year's Eve, taking place from afternoon until midnight. The event celebrates a community's local culture, often featuring music, dance, comedy, art, and always has plenty of food, fireworks, and ice sculptures. Most entertainment is freely available outside, but admission to indoor events requires the simple purchase of a First Night button, whose profits support the celebration as a whole. First Night celebrations are generally alcohol free. The First Night tradition was started in Boston in 1976 by a small group of artists, and its popularity quickly made it an annual event. Soon other surrounding communities started their own First Night celebrations. In 1993, First Night International (click here to find the First Night celebration closest to you) became a non-profit organization dedicated to helping other cities set up their own celebrations. It has since spread to cities all over the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and New Zealand.

This year marks our family's sixth New Year's Eve celebration in New Jersey, and Rex and I have always taken the girls out for an early dinner -- Opah Grill in Peapack-Gladstone, Pierre's in Harding Township, Plucky's Tavern at the Pluckemin Inn in Pluckemin -- and end up back at home, playing board games, making popcorn, and watching the ball drop in Times Square on TV. For the first time, London and Maddie seem to be about the right age for us to consider the First Night Morris County event on the Green in Morristown, New Jersey. I'm going to outline some of the kid-friendly events and performers here as we make our plans, and I would love to hear from anyone who has attended Morristown's First Night celebration in past years.

Think NJPAC for the Holidays… and Save with NJPAC Promotional Codes on Giselle, Cirque Eloize, and Golden Dragon Acrobats

Here at Roxiticus Desperate Housewives, I've been running a weekly feature called Roxy Saves, where I've gathered promotional codes from online retailers and made suggestions for unique and inexpensive holiday gifts. Over at Roxy's Best Of… I've been more focused on the "bricks and mortar" holiday savings available from our wealth of local New Jersey retailers, highlighted throughout the Roxy's Best Of… community of local sites with a "Shop Local NJ!" tag.

While I don't mind explaining to London and Maddie that even Santa needs to cut back on the excessive amount of Barbies and plastic toys this holiday season, I have been searching for one or two meaningful, magical gifts that would keep Christmas special for my girls. As my most loyal readers know, Rex and I believe in encouraging our daughters' passions (music, dance, gymnastics and tennis) and exposing them to a wide range of child-friendly art and culture. Just in case we have the next Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana or Jonas Brothers musical talent hiding in our basement, London and Maddie have asked Santa for an electronic drum set for their girl band, the Butter Bites. Add that to the keyboard Santa left under the tree last Christmas, a second-hand guitar that needs to be re-strung, two microphones and a karaoke machine, and the Butter Bites will be all set to explore their musical passions over the long cold winter.

I have also found an amazing local opportunity at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) for a special holiday gift that promises a child-friendly cultural experience at a great value. Over the past year, London and Maddie have enjoyed three different performances at NJPAC: Rex and the girls took me out to see Alvin Ailey on Mother's Day and we were all so impressed that we're headed back for this season's Mother's Day performance; we introduced the girls to a bit of Mom and Dad's history through Twyla Tharp's interpretation of the music of Billy Joel in "Movin' Out"; and most recently experienced the magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Cats. I've just committed to celebrating London's 8th birthday with three of her closest girlfriends and their moms at the Cirque Eloize performance at NJPAC in January. The girls and I will be posting all about it as our plans come together.

In the meantime, I'd like to share with all of you the chance to treat the young person in your life to the magic of live performance with a sweet holiday discount from NJPAC. Use coupon code TREAT to purchase tickets online, by phone (1-888 GO-NJPAC) or at the NJPAC box office by December 24th and you'll get one free child's ticket for each adult ticket purchased for Giselle, Cirque Eloize or Golden Dragon Acrobats. Discount is valid for Sections A, B, C, and D (no G or P) and expires December 24th. Subject to availability and not valid on prior purchase.

Giselle at NJPAC:

Using the choreography created by Marius Petipa in his definitive revivals, the State Ballet Theatre of Russia performs Adolphe Adam's beloved ballet – the timeless tale of a lovely yet fragile maiden, whose death from a broken heart dooms her to eternally roam the earth as a restless spirit. This sumptuous, traditional staging will be performed with full corps de ballet. The State Ballet Theatre of Russia brings Giselle to the stage at NJPAC on Sunday, January 18th at 4:00pm. Purchase tickets online, by phone (1-888 GO-NJPAC) or at the NJPAC box office by December 24th using NJPAC coupon code TREAT and get one free child's ticket for each adult ticket purchased for Giselle.

Cirque Eloize at NJPAC:

Experience the sights and sounds of a European circus in a vibrant, fully-staged production that brings together a company of acrobats, clowns, jugglers, trapeze artists and musicians to create a rich, fast-paced tango of emotions. Last seen at NJPAC with their eye-popping spectacle Rain, this world-renowned company returns with Nebbia, a brand new acrobatic extravaganza. Cirque Eloize passionately pursues artistic perfection – and achieves absolute magic. Our gang will be celebrating London's birthday at the Saturday matinee, but there are three magical Cirque Eloize performances of Nebbia scheduled: Saturday, January 31st at 2:00pm and 8:00pm and Sunday, February 1st at 2:00pm. Use NJPAC discount code TREAT to purchase tickets online, by phone (1-888 GO-NJPAC) or at the NJPAC box office by December 24th through December 24th and get one free child's ticket for each adult ticket purchased for Cirque Eloize in Nebbia.

Golden Dragon Acrobats at NJPAC:

From bending into improbable shapes to forming human pyramids on moving bicycles, this internationally acclaimed troupe celebrates Chinese culture with time-honored traditions that date back 25 centuries. The Golden Dragon Acrobats come to NJPAC on Sunday, February 22nd at 3:00pm. Use promotional code TREAT to Purchase tickets onlne by phone (1-888 GO-NJPAC) or at the NJPAC box office through December 24th and get one free child's ticket for each adult ticket purchased for the Golden Dragon Acrobats at NJPAC.

Warm wishes to all of you as you head out for another weekend of holiday shopping. Don't forget to Shop Local NJ!

Roxy’s Mail Call: Where to Celebrate When Your Kids Have Already Done It All

Dear Roxy,

I was wondering if you could help me with some suggestions. I am in charge of planning the holiday party for the competitive gymnastics team at Randolph Gymnastics every year. So far we did bowling, ice skating, roller skating and swimming. I am running out of ideas! Do you have any suggestions? I know you work with places in the area. We have about 25 girls on the team, and their ages range from 5 to 13. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help,

Shannon, Randolph Gymnastics & Climbing Center

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Shannon,

I will give it some more thought, but it sounds like you've really done it all! A couple of ideas would be "crafty" rather than the more physical activities you've done in previous years -- Studio U in Chester has crafts for all ages, including "Mom's Night Out" parties; Cooks and Crafts in Flanders does both crafts and cooking. New York Pizza in Chester lets groups in to make (and eat) pizzas together.

My other notion would be to attend an event together -- PaperMill Playhouse in Millburn has the Nutcracker in late November/December, NJPAC also has special holiday shows, or the Mayo Center (Community Theatre) in Morristown is closer and has some performances geared towards kids/teens.

Libby Lu in the Rockaway Mall does hair, nails, and make-up, Hannah Montana style. You could rent out a local movie theatre like Clearview Cinemas in Chester, particularly if there's a new (or old) gymnastics oriented movie all the girls would enjoy.

Hope that helps!

The End of an Era: Time In Interactive Playground in Randolph, New Jersey Closes Its Doors

Since London and Maddie had two friends' birthday parties to attend this past weekend, kids' birthday party venues have been on my mind. I shared a list of our family's faves over on my statewide Roxy's Best Of... New Jersey site, and have since learned via Roxy's e-mailbag that one of our family's favorite pre-school birthday party venues, Time In in Randolph, NJ, is out of business.

Ah, nostalgia. Our family spent a lot of time in Time In during London and Maddie's toddler and pre-school years, when climbing for an hour in a safe, padded environment followed by pizza, hot dogs, and birthday cake, was just their speed, and the Roxiticus Desperate Housewives could catch up on the latest gossip while our kids played together. When we went back to Time In last June for a 7-year-old girl's "late-over" birthday party on a Saturday night, however, it was clear that our girls, as well as everyone at the party, had outgrown Time In. Free Willy on the enormous HDTV couldn't save the day, and our family couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Even though my little girls are growing up, I've become conscious that there are plenty of Morris County, NJ parents who need toddler and pre-school activities, and Time In's impressive play and party center offered a clean, safe, climate controlled environment for young children to play, imagine, create or just have fun. London and Maddie enjoyed Time In for birthday parties, group play dates with their Westmont Montessori classmates, and open play on a rainy afternoon. Particularly in bad weather or the winter months, kids need a place like Time In to burn off energy through jumping, climbing, bouncing and sliding. While I'm assuming the owners of Time In had explored all options before shutting down, I will keep Roxy's Best Of... readers up to date if a new owner takes over the facility.

For those of you with a kid's birthday party already scheduled (and cancelled) at Time In, you may want to consider Randolph Gymnastics, right across the street (Middlebury Boulevard) in Randolph, NJ. Our family first discovered Randolph Gymnastics at a pre-school birthday party there back in the Fall of 2004. Since then, our girls have enjoyed the giant slide, tarzan rope and jumping castle with their friends at countless Randolph Gymnastics birthday parties. More importantly, we were inspired by the amazing “Olympic size” facilities to start gymnastics classes, and this year marks London and Maddie’s fourth year of lessons at Randolph Gymnastics. If you’re interested in hosting your child’s birthday party at Randolph Gymnastics, call (973) 584-4111, ask for Shannon, the manager, and tell ‘em Roxy sent you… you’ll save $50 off the price of a Sunday birthday party. Speaking from experience, I can also say that Sunday, particularly late morning into early afternoon, is the best time for a gymnastics birthday party. It just feels a lot less hectic than weekday evenings or Saturdays, and I’ve enjoyed catching up with the other parents while our kids get their ya-yas out with the exceptional staff of Randolph Gymnastics.

Feels Like Kids' Birthday Party Season Is In Full Swing in Morris and Somerset Counties, New Jersey

Fellow blogger (and Roxy's Best Of... San Francisco, California contributor) Jason Buckley stopped by earlier today to give me his sympathy, both for my extended series of defeats in BlogExplosion's Battle of the Blogs, and for my Friday Girls' Afternoon Out at the Clearview Chester six-plex to see Disney's High School Musical 3. While you win some you lose some in those blogging competitions, what I tried to explain to Jason about the Disney movie was that the sappy mooommmy side of me had a terrific time....which is sort of a lead-in to this long overdue post about kiddie birthday parties in the Greater Roxiticus Valley (Mendham, Bernardsville, Chester, Randolph, Far Hills, Morris and Somerset Counties, NJ). And, whether you're here via BlogExplosion, EntreCard, BlogCatalog, MyBlogLog, or some other method, here's a reminder that I'd love to have more of my fellow bloggers contributing the occasional post about your local faves to my Roxy's Best Of... online community of local blogs. Do drop in and ask about starting a Roxy's Best Of... blog for your hometown.

When London and Maddie were in pre-school at Westmont Montessori in Mendham, NJ, and the birthday tradition was to invite the entire class, it felt like we were out at Toys With Love in Chester, NJ buying presents every week, and attending one or two kiddie birthday parties every weekend, particularly in the late fall and winter seasons. It was actually a great way to get to know our children's friends, as well as a great bunch of parents....many of our "Westmont friendships" have lasted through the years. Thankfully, as my girls have gotten older, Mendham Township Elementary School birthday parties have been fewer and farther between, frequently same-sex, and smaller "productions." This weekend, however, was remarkably hectic with kids' birthday parties for the girls in Maddie's class.

After our Girls' Afternoon Out with my friend Susan and her daughter, Abby, to see High School Musical 3 at the Clearview six-plex in Chester yesterday, Maddie attended a birthday party at Stuff-a-Roo and Teddy Too on Main Street in Chester, NJ. Today, we were off to the Florham Park Roller Rink for a rollerskating, rollerblading birthday party. Both turned out to be good fun in a hometown setting, instead of driving to a chain store in the mall.

All of this birthday activity has reminded me to make a list (and check it twice) of all the best kids' birthday venues in Morris and Somerset Counties, and to encourage our loyal Roxy's Best Of... readers to leave a comment to add your own raves and recommendations to the list.

Garden State Ballet in Randolph, Rutherford, and Newark, NJ. For Maddie's sixth birthday party last March, Miss Katie from Garden State Ballet actually came to our home and gave a ballet lesson for twenty girls in our basement ballet studio. For those who don't have our sweet setup at home, Garden State Ballet would be happy to host your ballerina's birthday party at one of their three studios.

Randolph Gymnastics and Randolph Rock Climbing in Randolph, NJ. If you’re interested in hosting your child’s birthday party at Randolph Gymnastics, call (973) 584-4111 and tell ‘em Roxy sent you… you’ll save $50 off the price of a Sunday birthday party.

The Little Gym in Randolph, NJ. Not nearly as amazing as Randolph Gymnastics, but perhaps more comfortable for toddlers and pre-schoolers who are reluctant to let mom or dad out of their sight.

Time In, Randolph, NJ. We spent a lot of time in Time In during London and Maddie's toddler and pre-school years, when climbing for an hour in a safe, padded environment followed by pizza, hot dogs, and birthday cake, was just their speed, and the Roxiticus Desperate Housewives could catch up on the latest gossip while our kids played together.

Pump It Up, Randolph, NJ. Giant pumped up inflatables where kids from about age 4 through maybe the first or second grade bounce, run through obstacle courses and let off some steam.

Aspen Ice, Randolph, NJ

Mennen Arena (ice skating), Morristown, NJ. We had London's seventh birthday at Mennen Arena last January, and give it a huge rave. We had attended one of my friend Hope's daughter's birthday party at Aspen Ice in July, but I learned that we couldn't get a party room there without paying for pizza and hot dogs. What you may or may not know about Roxy is that I cannot, absolutely cannot, stand to see children eat, with all of their disgusting habits....I've successfully scheduled all of London and Maddie's parties from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and celebrate with a spectacular birthday cake from Carol Falcone (our Cake Lady) in Far Hills, NJ.

Pastime Lanes, Mendham, NJ. You can rent out this four-lane bowling alley for your child's birthday party. It would be great for adults, too, but no kegs are allowed.

Chester Riding Club, Chester, NJ.

Studio U, Chester, NJ.

Stuff-A-Roo and Teddy Too, 54 Main Street in Chester, NJ.

Annie's Playhouse, Far Hills, NJ

Great for fair weather birthday parties in the spring, summer, or even the early fall...think apple picking, pumpkin picking, pony rides, farms in the area, including Alstede Farms, Riamede Farms, and Stony Hill Farm, all in Chester, NJ, or Valley Shepherd Creamery or Ort Farms in Long Valley, NJ.

London and Maddie's Fave Fall Activities for Kids in the Roxiticus Valley

Now that we're well into the back-to-school rhythm, including after school activities, I thought it was a good time to share a list of London and Maddie's favorite annual Fall activities in the Roxiticus Valley:
That's all for now... hope that will keep you and the kids busy!

London and Maddie Recommend...Happy Birthday, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald and Anne MacDonald Canham

Do you remember Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle? I vividly recall sitting on the rug in the library at Old York School in Branchburg, New Jersey, listening to the librarian, Mrs. Hagan, as she read to our class from the original Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books. Now, 50 years later (OK, not fifty years since I was in elementary school, but fifty years since the original books were published), Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is back!

Published in 2008, Happy Birthday, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is a brand-new bundle of wonderfully magical cures for any bad habit. Tonight at bedtime, I finished reading the last chapter to London and Maddie, and I have to confess that I have two favorite cures that I wish Mrs. Piggle-WIggle could apply to our household: The Messy Stuff-and-Cram Cure for my untidy daughters, and The Never-Finish Cure for their procrastinating mom. Right now I'm blogging instead of finishing my taxes.

From the Roxiticus Desperate Mailbag: Apricot & Ivy Online Children's Toys

Dear Roxy,

My husband and I met your realtor, Ann Tannen, at Natirar. She mentioned your site as a great resource for families. We are residents of Bernardsville, New Jersey. We moved out from Manhattan about 4 years ago. Needless to say, with two little ones at home, we haven't explored this area as much as we'd have hoped. Finding your blog has been a wonderful guide for us!

I'd like to offer a new business for your list of Kid Stuff. I run an online business called
Apricot & Ivy. We sell European and USA toys for babies and young children. We are a new business (early 2007) and are housed in Bernardsville. We are building our business with a foundation of great customer service. We offer free gift cards, gift wrap, and usually include a free stuffed animal. We also work with a number of local and domestic charities. We have made donations to organizations large and small ... from local pre-schools to research hospitals (including Morristown Memorial and St Judes).

I hope you don't mind the suggestion. Your blog is so well-written, immensely informative and appears to be aimed at young families. All the best to you. My family and I look forward to trying out a number of the businesses you have mentioned on your site.

Kindest regards,
Apricot

Dear Apricot,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful e-mail, and my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I've spent much of the summer away at our beach house in
Bay Head, NJ, and launching a new blogging community called Roxy's Best Of.... I've visited your site and I'd be happy to post about your online business, Apricot & Ivy, hopefully in plenty of time for holiday shopping...my kids go back to school tomorrow and I'm hoping to be a more prolific blogger in the "new year."

All the best,
Roxy

Modern-Day Beach Blanket Bingo: London and Maddie Play Disney Bingo at the Beach!

Back around the Fourth of July, Lynette and Tom and their twins came to visit us at our beach house in Bay Head, and complimented me (Mother of the Year, Mother of the Year) on how London and Maddie are too busy -- playing in the waves, painting seashells and selling them for 25 cents each (they hit their $125 target before the end of July and the Kit Kittredge treehouse, some assembly required, is hosting club meetings in our family room), and having wholesome outdoor family fun -- to waste their time watching TV at the beach. What Lynette doesn't know (and let's keep her in the dark while I do a little superior dance) is that, thanks to my ongoing battles with the Comcastic cable people down here, we don't have TV at the beach!

So London and Maddie are counting on our digital video recorder back in the Roxiticus Valley to record all of the new episodes of Hannah Montana, Suite Life of Zack & Cody, and other Disney Channel favorites...I think we might even be missing the premiere of the third Cheetah Girls movie. Meanwhile, Rex trekked in to our New York City office for a client meeting earlier this week, and Brent slipped a package for me from IZEA into Rex's briefcase. When Rex arrived home, London and Maddie were delighted to discover....Disney Bingo!

They quickly unpacked the box, popped the interactive family-friendly game DVD from ScreenLife Games into our TV, and looked forward to a visit from all their favorite animated Disney characters...Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, and all the Disney princesses, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (Rex's favorite dwarf is SmartyPants)...even Cruella DeVille! Rex and I thought we'd grab some quality adult time on our porch while the girls tested out the game, but that turned out to be a mistake.

Squeals of delight quickly turned to cries of "Mooooooooooommmmmmmmy!" as Maddie apparently broke the rules by changing Bingo patterns mid-game and London called her on it. Instead of relaxing on our porch with a bottle of wine, Rex and I should have remembered the importance of spending quality time with the entire family and achieved family harmony through Disney Bingo instead of letting it come to blows. Anyway, despite the "incident," when I later "interviewed" London and Maddie about their Disney Bingo experience, they both gave it a rave. Naturally, London liked it best when she won, and Maddie liked seeing all of her favorite animated Disney characters on the screen....both girls would like to put in a request to ScreenLife Games for a "live" character version of Disney Bingo that features Hannah Montana, Zack and Cody, the Cheetah Girls, the Jonas Brothers, and the gang from High School Musical.

We've got a big week coming up at the beach, with another visit from Lynette and Tom and the twins, as well as Susan and Mike and their daughter. London and Maddie will be able to play Disney Bingo with all their friends, and if they enjoy it as much as my girls do, I'll know where to do my Christmas shopping...I can just go online to Amazon.com or Drugstore.com and stock up on Disney Bingo games!

London and Maddie Are Ready to Be Summer Stars at Annie's Playhouse in Far Hills, New Jersey

Last year, London and Maddie had a great time at Annie's Playhouse Summer Stars summer camp in Far Hills, New Jersey (actually, while Annie's Playhouse "headquarters" is located in Far Hills, the camp sessions are held at the Presbyterian Church in Bernardsville, New Jersey). Last year, my girls were among the youngest Summer Stars, performing favorites like "We Go Together" from Grease and "We're All In This Together" from High School Musical along with their groups in the summer show.

This year, the girls are starting Annie's Playhouse Summer Stars camp next Monday, July 14th, and I'm really looking forward to another terrific performance on Friday, August 1st. We'll keep you posted!

In addition to Summer Stars, Annie's Playhouse offers classes in Musical Theatre, Dance/Acting, and "Young Starlets." Fall 2008 classes include:

  • MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP (separate classes for ages 8-12 and 13+): This specialized performance class will expand skills in music, movement and performance. Singers, actors and dancers will all benefit from the techniques studied here. Students will work with scripted material, providing them with the opportunity to practice and strengthen presentation techniques.
  • MUSICAL THEATRE JR. (ages 5-7): The first in Annie's series of musical theatre classes. Students will learn songs, dance, and expand their comfort with performing.
  • MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE (all ages?): Get dance skills you need to succeed with comprehensive curriculum in Jazz, Tap and Ballet for the musical stage. One class for all three, or individual Jazz, Tap and Ballet dancing classes available.
  • HIP HOP (separate classes for 5-7 and 8-12): This fun-filled class opens the stage door to street dance. This class is for everyone interested in energy driven dancing.
  • ACTING: The perfect class to explore and understand the foundations of acting for the stage. Students will be exposed to exercises, monologues and scene work.
  • YOUNG STARLETS: Pre-Musical Theatre (ages 3-5), Sing and Play (ages 3-5), Act I (ages 3-5), and Pre-Ballet/Tap (ages 2+)

Annie’s Playhouse is filled with young, hip, up-and-coming artists and working theater professionals who have the cutting edge needed to prepare your child for the future world of musical theater. Annie’s Playhouse offers a widely diverse curriculum of acting, singing, dance, and a variety of musical theater workshops and combo classes as well as private study in voice and instruments. I may look into piano lessons for London and Maddie in September....Santa brought the girls a keyboard for Christmas 2006, and they really enjoy playing simple tunes, but our in-home instructor quit after only two or three lessons because we "took too many vacations!"

Annie's Playhouse also offers extraordinary birthday parties; however they are only for registered Playhouse students.

Annie's Playhouse is owned and operated by Annie Forgione. Annie has over 13 years of professional performance experience. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Central Florida and holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre. Annie is an accomplished performer and an active member of Actors Equity Association. Recently she performed as a Disney princess in various shows in Orlando, Florida. Her favorite roles include Rose Petal in My Perfectly Princess Tea Party at Walt Disney World. Annie developed the interactive show Cinderella’s Princess Court with Walt Disney Entertainment, currently playing in New York City. Annie has been a Broadway Kid since age 10 and has performed in numerous benefits in NYC including Friends of Center Stage at the Hudson Theatre alongside the very popular Kristen Chenoweth. Annie has also provided numerous commercial voice-overs for companies such as Coca-Cola, Metlife, and General Motors. As a certified teacher Annie taught Theatre at Bernards High School and directed productions “I Remember Mama” and the unforgettable “Wizard of Oz.”

Pavan's Tennis Academy at Fox Chase Tennis in Chester, New Jersey

Rex and I went to watch the girls play tennis yesterday at Fox Chase Tennis in Chester, New Jersey. They're really getting good for their age, and I think it is thanks to a new European training technique for kids introduced here in the Roxiticus Valley by Pavan Patel. Pavan pointed me toward a YouTube video on the Serve Rally Score approach, and I've embedded it here for those who are interested. Instead of boring the little munchkins with repetitive instruction, the larger, slower balls give the kids a chance to actually play the game of tennis. Take a look:

If you live in the Morris County area, my kids love playing tennis with Coach Pavan, and I highly recommend his weekly tennis lessons for kids, starting with "munchkins" from age 4, on up through highly competitive high school group and private lessons. You can learn more at the Pavan's Tennis Academy web site.

Pavan's Tennis at Fox Chase Tennis Club Has A New Web Site!

Pavan's Tennis Academy at Fox Chase Tennis Club in Chester, NJ, just launched the Pavan's Tennis Academy Web Site to keep parents informed about their children's tennis program through out the year. Parents can also visit Pavan's site to see the latest information in the tennis world.

I just signed up both of my girls for another 8-week session at Pavan's Munchkin Tennis Academy at the Fox Chase Tennis Club. Phone: (908) 879-5231.

Pavan Patel is great with the kids and just introduced a new, European approach for developing high level junior tennis players (aged 10 and under) involving red, orange, and green balls that are different sizes and "speeds." Serve, rally, score is the slogan the ITF uses to explain how tennis can best be introduced to starter players. Pavan believes it is important that coaches make the first experience of the starter player positive. The ITF believes that getting starter players to play the game (serving, rallying and scoring) from the first lesson is vital in ensuring an enjoyable experience that they’ll want to continue.

Pavan is also running a tennis camp this summer at Fox Chase Tennis for 9 weeks starting June 23rd. It looks like kids can sign up for as many weeks as they want...we have signed up for one week of half-day Munchkins Tennis Camp in August. If you're interested in three or more weeks of tennis camp, click here to take advantage of a special offer to save up to 15% on Pavan's Tennis Academy Summer Camp if you sign up by May 30th, 2008.

Tell them all that Roxiticus Desperate Housewives sent you....

Custom Mirrors and Glass:

Back at the end of January, I needed someone to install a custom mirror wall in our basement fitness room and I found Basking Ridge Glass & Mirror. They came the same day to do the measurements, and promise to complete the job within a week. They don't have a web site, but their phone number is (908) 766-9199. February 4: The mirrors are here, the mirrors are here! Thanks to Basking Ridge Glass & Mirror, I now have an amazing mirrored fitness/ballet room in my basement. So well done I wish I could take a picture for you....but I'm afraid I'm not smart enough to take a picture of a mirror that would come out half as nice as it looks in my basement.

So you've decided to join us here in the Roxiticus Valley (Mendham, Bernardsville, Chester, Peapack-Gladstone, Far Hills, NJ). Leave a comment on the Roxiticus Desperate Housewives blog and we'll try to line you up with some friends.

I hope the next few sections don't get me labelled as a "mommy blogger." Eew.

Early Childhood Education (Age 2 - 5):
In the "better late than never" category: http://www.westmontmontessori.org/. For anyone in the Mendham, NJ/Chester, NJ area looking for a terrific pre-school ("early childhood education"), we're done here but we had a great bunch of years (age 2 through 5) at Westmont Montessori. An amazing experience not just for our kids but for the adult friendships that started there and continue on.

Kid Birthday Parties:

Back in January, we had a birthday party at Mennen Sports Arena (http://morrisparks.net/aspparks/mennenmain.asp) in Morristown. A perfect ice skating venue for a party of 30 kids and about 10 skating adults.

Other good times we've had include Randolph Rock Climbing (http://www.randolphclimbingcenter.com/) and Randolph Gymnastics (http://www.randolphgym.com/).

Mr. Ray (http://www.mrray.com/) sings great kid music (roughly age 2 through 5) that adults can listen to without pain. He does a lot of live shows in the area, is available for private parties, and you can buy his CDs online.

Kid Stuff:
There's not a lot of kid stuff right in town in Mendham, NJ, but my older daughter just had a great time with her Brownie troop at Pastime Bowling Lanes in Mendham, NJ. It is a cute little place, with only four lanes. One of our friends has planned her daughter's birthday party there in April, so I will report back on Pastime Lanes as a kid party venue.

Be sure to check out my New Post on Summer Camp 2008.

Fun Stuff for Kids to Do:
Little Musicmakers (http://www.littlemusicmakers.org/overview.html), from babies to about age 4.

West Morris YMCA (http://www.wmaymca.com/) -- all ages. We've used it for toddler
gymnastics, toddler swim lessons, and several summers with the Backyard Pool Program (private lessons in your own pool)

Annie's Playhouse (http://www.anniesplayhouse.com/) -- acting, singing, musical theatre stuff, including summer camp. Starts around age 5, on up to teenagers. Summer camp for all ages. Phone: (908) 658- 3002.

Garden State Ballet (http://www.gardenstateballet.org/) -- with a branch in Randolph, NJ, GSB starts ballet classes around age 4 and continues through high school.

Randolph Gymnastics (http://www.randolphgym.com/) -- in addition to birthday parties, Randolphy Gymnastics is the best place for weekly gymnastics classes from about age 4 up through high school.

I just signed up both of my girls for another 8-week session at Pavan's Munchkin Tennis Academy at the Fox Chase Tennis Club. Phone: (908) 879-5231. Pavan Patel is great with the kids and just introduced a new, European approach ("serve, rally, score") for developing high level junior tennis players (aged 10 and under) involving red, orange, and green balls that are different sizes and "speeds." Pavan is also running a tennis camp this summer at Fox Chase Tennis for 9 weeks starting June 23rd. It looks like kids can sign up for as many weeks as they want...we're going to try it for one week in August.

Awesome family fun at the Somerset County, NJ 4-H Fair: http://somerset.rcre.rutgers.edu/4hfair/. I believe the Somerset County 4-H Fair is touted as the biggest free family fair this side of the Mississippi. It started in 1948, and I've been going since about 1971. There are still no admission or parking fees, no midway or carnival rides. Instead you'll find kids aged 6 to 18 and their horses, dogs, sheep, cows, other pets, projects and activities. The Somerset County 4-H Fair recognizes the accomplishments of 1,000 Somerset County 4-H members and is a showcase for visitors to see a wide variety of 4-H projects in action. Dates for 2008 are Wednesday, August 13th through Friday, August 15th.

Pumpkin picking at Alstede Farm in Chester, NJ: http://www.alstedefarms.com/

Back when my girls were at Westmont Montessori School, the class went on a tour of Valley Shepherd Creamery in Long Valley, NJ. You don't need to be part of a school trip....you can bring your kids and come out to the farm to see ewes and lambs grazing in the pastures. Watch them milk the ewes on a special rotating milking parlor, and see how they hand make artisan sheep milk cheeses and yummy 'Ewe-gurt'. Take a hayride through the pastures to the cheese aging cave in the hillside of Long Valley. Finish it up by buying all your favorite sheep cheeses at the Valley Shepherd Creamery shop! Valley Shepherd Creamery is located at 50 Fairmount Rd in Long Valley, NJ. Phone: 908-876-3200

Best toy store: Toys With Love, in Chester, NJ: http://www.toyswithlove.com/

Chester Schools Science Fair: http://www.chestersciencefair.org/. Chester hosts one of the largest annual Science Fairs in the statewith over 500 students presenting more than 400 projects. It is open to students in grades K-8 living in Chester Boro or Chester Township, NJ. This year's science fair was held on Saturday, March 1st. Can't wait to hear about all the fun from our friends in Chester.

Charity Begins at Home:
Visiting Nurses (http://www.visitingnurse.org/) take cash donations as well as all sorts of new and used goods (clothing, computers, toys) for their rummage sale, twice a year (May/October) in Far Hills. The 2008 VNA Rummage Sale in Far Hills, NJ is scheduled for Friday, May 2nd through Sunday, May 4th.

Morristown Memorial Hospital (http://www.morristownmemorialhospital.org/en/morristown/ways+to+help/foundations+and+donations/index.html). While we'd rather not end up in the hospital, we've always felt like we've been in good hands when we've come here. We've been involved with donations to the Goryeb Children's Hospital, the new Gagnon Heart Hospital, and the opportunity to honor nurses.

Bridge of Books (http://www.bridgeofbooksfoundation.org/main.htm): a great way to share used children's books with kids who need them the most yet have the least access to books.

Salvation Army (http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf/fm-ndos?OpenForm&go=1&zip=07960), 95 Spring Street in Morristown. Phone is (973) 539-2700. I had some lightly used kids clothing and spent a lot of time trying to find a local charity that didn't want only brand new. The Salvation Army is happy to accept clothing in good condition to help out local families.

Somerset Medical Center: Charity begins at home (and a good time is had by all) at the Far Hills Race Meeting to benefit Somerset Medical Center: http://www.farhillsrace.org/. I've only been once (October 2007), the sun was shining, the horses were running, the beer was flowing, the kids were playing in the mud, and I'll hope the weather repeats in October 2008.

Hey, Where Did You Get That Great Nanny?

We've had two great nannies, and used two different agencies:
Choice Care (http://www.cho1cecare.com/)
A Choice Nanny (http://www.achoicenanny.com/montvale/)

For temporary child care (I used them on our nanny's maternity leave) or one-offs (evenings, weekends, a day off from school), you'll find In A Pinch at http://www.inapinchnj.com/.

I also used a national online service (http://sittercity.com/) to find a local babysitter when we traveled to Baltimore. It worked out well in Baltimore, and I've remained a member (at $9.95/month) in case I can't get one of my usual teenage babysitters on a weekend.

Chester Riding Club

Today my younger daughter and I are off to a 6-year-old birthday party at Chester Riding Club in Chester, NJ. I've attended one other birthday party there, back in October with my older daughter, who has an unfortunate horse allergy....but we knew that going in and dosed her with Benadryl. The earlier party was a "girl party" (birthday girl invites the girls in her class as well as other gal pals) and I suspect this one will be as well. The girls had a blast....at least at this age, no serious riding takes place. Three or four of the girls at a time don helmets, mount mid-sized horses, and an instructor leads each one around the horse ring. Parents and the other party-goers can watch from behind the glass windows at ground level or up in the second floor party room.

Due to the horse allergies, we haven't signed up our girls for riding lessons, but Chester Riding Club offers them for all ages. Several of the other Roxiticus Desperate Housewives' children (from age 6 through high school age) do take lessons there. The moms, while warning that riding is an expensive habit, highly recommend the Chester Riding Club for its quality instruction.

Starting to Think About Summer Camp

The Roxiticus Desperate Housewives are starting to think about summer camp, and I'll do my best to cover the camps my kids have tried, and the ones my friends recommend.

Mendham Township Elementary School Pathways to Learning Summer Camp:
For starters, I can highly recommend the Mendham Township Elementary School Pathways to Learning Summer Camp that (soon-to-be-former) Superintendent Christine Johnson launched last summer. Last year, my girls attended the camp's first two weeks in July and begged me to go back for the final week in August. The MTES Cub Camp was the perfect way for my rising kindergartner to get to know some of the other kids she'd be in class with in September, and to get to know her way around the elementary school ahead of time. Camp is open to all children (from rising kindergartners through eighth grade) in Mendham Township and the surrounding communities.

This year, the Pathways to Learning Camp is back at MTES, running June 24 through August 1st with expanded hours (8:30am - 2:00pm). Campers are grouped by grade levels in order to provide appropriate activities and meaningful experiences.

  • Cub Camp - For students entering Kindergarten in September 2008
  • Junior Tiger Camp - For students entering 1st and 2nd grades in September 2008
  • Tiger Camp - For students entering 3rd and 4th grades in September 2008
  • Bulldog Camp - For students entering 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in September 2008

Campers will spend an action packed week or weeks (you can sign up for 1 week or all 6 weeks or any number in between) engaged in activities such as creative fitness & sports games, visual and performing arts, challenges & contests to build teamwork & personal leadership skills, technology, theme days, literacy and math enrichment & skills reinforcement, and hands-on science projects. Certified teachers, district administrators, and junior camp counselors will staff the camp. In addition, a certified nurse will be on-site at all times. The MTES camp sounds "educational" but my girls never felt like they were in school, they were having too much fun!

Transportation and food services are also available at an extra cost. My kids won't eat anything but mom's home-made peanut butter and honey sandwiches, but there's a round-trip (or one way) bus option that I'll probably try this year. Last year, we signed up for it but cancelled the bus trip when they wanted my kids on the bus at 8:10am for a 9:00am start, so I dread the possibility that this year's bus ride could start at 7:30 in the morning. We are not morning people!

Camp tuition is $269 per 5-day week, $218 for 4-day (holiday) weeks, or you can pay $1,490 to register for all six weeks. The MTES Pathways to Learning Summer Camp is a great value if you don't need full-day day care. At some of the "country club" camps mentioned below, you could pay $1,000 for one week of camp.

Annie's Playhouse Summer Stars:
My girls also attended the Annie's Playhouse Summer Stars camp for three weeks last summer, and we'll do that again this year. The camp runs 8 weeks, from June 16th to August 8th. Most importantly the show, where your kids sing and dance and show off what they've learned, is Friday, August 1st. Phone: (908) 658- 3002.

Bad News on the West Morris YMCA Backyard Pool Program:

No, it's not a day camp, but it's what my girls do on summer afternoons. For three summers now, my kids have had private swimming lessons in our backyard pool. The West Morris YMCA sends out a high school or college kid who's passed their lifeguarding tests and the kids learn at their own level on their own turf (or surf, as it were). Unfortunately, due to rising gasoline costs, the West Morris YMCA has cancelled their Backyard Pool Program for the Summer of 2008. I will look into alternative programs and post them here.

All of the Usual Suspects:

Of course, all of the usual Roxiticus Desperate Housewives "kid stuff" suspects have summer programs. Check out Randolph Gymnastics, Garden State Ballet, and Pavan's Munchkin Tennis Academy at the Fox Chase Tennis Club (no web site, phone 908-879-5231).

Word of Mouth Summer Camps, Untested by this Roxiticus Desperate Housewife:

We have friends who swear by Harbor Hills Day Camp in Randolph, NJ. Since I have an nanny (remember, I'm an investment banker, not really a housewife), I'm not really interested in putting my kids on a bus at 8 in the morning and not seeing them again until 4 or 4:30pm. However, if you're looking for a full day camp with round-trip bus service and all the "country club" extras your kids can imagine (swimming, bungee jumping, go carts, etc.), Harbor Hills may be the place for you.

Hi-Hills Day Camp at Gill St. Bernards is right down the street from us in Gladstone, NJ. Cheaper than Harbor Hills but not quite as luxurious, Hi-Hills does offer horseback riding.

Meadowbrook Country Day Camp in Long Valley, NJ is another option if you're looking for full day care, want to spend a bit less than you would at Harbor Hills, and want your kids to have a more outdoorsy camp experience (e.g., fishing instead of bungee jumping).

Other Local Services:

Custom Mirrors and Glass:

Yesterday (1/28/08) I needed someone to install a custom mirror wall in our basement fitness room and I found Basking Ridge Glass & Mirror. They came the same day to do the measurements, and promise to complete the job within a week. They don't have a web site, but their phone number is (908) 766-9199. I'll report back after they finish the job.
.
Reporting back after they finished the job (2/4/08): The mirrors are here, the mirrors are here!

Our Realtor:

Ann Tannen, a great realtor with the patience of a saint, spent 2 years searching Bernardsville, NJ and Mendham, NJ and helped us to find our dream home in the Roxiticus Valley. Here's a link to Ann Tannen's Realty Executives web site: http://www.tannenrealty.com/. Before Roxiticus Desperate Housewives and our Best of Mendham, Chester, Bernardsville, NJ directories existed, Ann was our only resource for a handyman, tailor, pre-school, etc. Give Ann Tannen a call at (908) 221-9900 and tell her the Roxiticus Desperate Housewives sent you.

Movers:

So you've decided to join us here in the Roxiticus Valley (Mendham, Bernardsville, Chester, Peapack-Gladstone, Far Hills, NJ). Give Padded Wagon a call at (973) 335-5055 or visit their web site (http://www.paddedwagon.com/) and have them move you here from wherever you are.

Pavan Patel is great with the kids and just introduced a new, European approach for developing high level junior tennis players (aged 10 and under) involving red, orange, and green balls that are different sizes and "speeds." Neither Pavan nor Fox Chase Tennis has a web site yet. Pavan is also running a tennis camp this summer at Fox Chase Tennis for 9 weeks starting June 23rd. It looks like kids can sign up for as many weeks as they want...we may try it in August.
