Music Monday: Bob Geldof & Bon Jovi -- I Don't Like Mondays

As we were wrapping up a nice long Thanksgiving weekend, Maddie clearly didn't want it to end, and told me "I don't like Mondays," reminding me of a very sad yet compelling song by Sir Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats (released in October 1979 and referring to a January 1979 elementary school shooting by 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer). I was reminded at church today that the holidays can be a lonely and alienating time for many of us, but I'd like to look past the darkness to a plea for a peaceful Advent season (the time leading up to Christmas). Here's a video of Bon Jovi joining Bob Geldof to perform "I Don't Like Mondays":

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be show-ow-ow-ow-own?

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet 16 ain’t that peachy keen
Now that ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reasons do you need?
Oh Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot
The whole day down, down, down, shoot it all down

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys a while
And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
(With the problems of the how's and why's)
And he can see no reasons
'Cos there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die?
Oh Oh Oh

Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like
I don’t like (Tell me why)
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don't like Mondays
I wanna shoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oot the whole day down

Never Say Goodbye

I know it is either early or late for Music Monday, but I'm bluer than blue over some news I've received about a friend and wanted to post this Bon Jovi song as a tribute. While it is not my place to share any details, I have been in tears all morning about her imminent departure. I have never been good at goodbyes, but sometimes there is nothing you can do or say, it's just the way it is.

As I sit in this smoky room
The night about to end
I pass my time with strangers
But this bottle's my only friend

Remember when we used to park
On Butler Street out in the dark
Remember when we lost the keys
And you lost more than that in my backseat

Remember when we used to talk
About busting out - we'd break their hearts
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

Remember days of skipping school
Racing cars and being cool
With a six pack and the radio
We didn't need no place to go

Remember at the prom that night
You and me we had a fight
But the band they played our favorite song
And I held you in my arms so strong

We danced so close
We danced so slow
And I swore Id never let you go
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

I guess you'd say we used to talk
About busting out
Wed break their hearts
Together - forever

I used this song back in college to write an essay that I sure wish I could find right now. Unfortunately, back in the day, we had typewriters and cave drawings rather than computers, so I will have to sort through my boxes in the basement for a hard copy.
