Keeping Score - A Studio30+ Writing Prompt

I've reached, and may have passed somewhat, mid-life. But where is the demarcation point? I'd like to know. 40? 50? 60? Well, I've passed them all, so I'm pretty sure I've hit mid-life somewhere along the space-time continuum. And I find I've slowed down. I no longer rush here and there cramming as much as possible into a day. I relax, take my time. If I don't get to it today, I'll get to it tomorrow. So my mid-life philosophy. might be in keeping with that great Eagles tune "Take It Easy". And that includes golf. Golf? Before you think I've just run roughshod over a non-sequitur golf is one of my mid-life activities. I started playing about four or five years ago and have been an avid player since. Avid not accomplished. I'm pretty bad truth be told but at the end of the day I'm a 100-110 stroke 18 holer. Now people tell me that's a damn fine score for a beginner. What can I say? I keep my own score. Yeah, and I cheat. W...

Putting Around in Panama

I was taking things easy Tuesday. It's my chemo pill day so I stuck close to the condo and didn't play golf with my brother-in-law Jean-Marc and his friend Christiane. It gave me time to read up a little on Manuel Noriega. You know, the former military governor of Panama who was trained by and worked for the CIA, ran drugs, killed people and now wastes away in jail after finally being extradited to his homeland after trials and jail terms in both the United States and France? Yeah, that's him. Noriega not a happy camper when captured. Did you know that when the Americans invaded Panama in 1989 and surrounded the Vatican Embassy where he was holed up in an operation called "Nifty Package" U.S. Navy Seals blasted rock music at deafening levels in an attempt to get him to surrender? Do you know what song they played over and over again? I Fought the Law and the Law Won by the Clash. It must have worked. He surrendered. On Wednesday, I fought the golf course....

Satellite of Golf

Satellite's gone Up to the skies Things like that drive me Out of my mind I don't think Lou Reed would mind my mashing up the title of his excellent song . You see, that's exactly what happened to me Sunday. Waiting for company to show up for dinner, I turned on the TV to catch some of the Northern Trust Open golf game in which Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley and Bill Haas were bumping along exchanging the lead on the final holes. Mickelson had won the week previous so I was pulling for him. The company arrived and I went to the door to greet them. 'Cause usually when you have company that's what you do. You let them in. My friend, Bernard, was sporting sunglasses and said something to the effect of coming over to see the stars. I joked that must be why he was wearing his sunglasses. Funny, no? No he was talking about stars in the sky. More specifically, the space station. Turns out the International Space Station was scheduled to pass over my house...

Dufus Came From Orlando FLA

Yep, I'm back from 10 days in Orlando. It was just the tonic I needed. Quality time with the brothers Bray golfing, clubbing, ballooning, bocci balling - and the meals: I've never eaten so much. Diet time now that I'm back. Just take a look at this, for example, a cardiac arrest on a plate: Bacon Cheese Burger, Chilli Cheese Fries and a couple of Coronas at the Tiki Bar Of course the main attraction was the golf. My brother Steve lives on the Highlands Reserve Golf Course just outside Orlando. And Steve, Whitey (you remember Whitey! - "Hi Whitey") and I golfed every day but one. Whitey, Dufus, Steve at Highlands Reserve - "watch out for that bunker!" Sure we all look happy in the picture. But there were days, for each of us, when our favourite golf club was the rake. We all managed to find the bunkers on the course. To the point we thought we were guest stars on All In The Family. So Steve and Whitey who are both avid golfers scored in th...
