LP Review: "Living Tomb" by Ossuarium

It's been rolling around in my internetting lately.

The it being the latest album from 20 Buck Spin: Living Tomb by Ossuarium.

That was enough to pique my interest in this up and coming death metal band.

Ossuarium appears to love to defy convention as much as they adhere to it.

Living Tomb begins with the requisite overture that so many death metal bands entitle, simply Intro.

Then instead of the blast beats from hell, I was greeted by a thunderous two four beat that held power and sway.

After denying the blast beats for a time, they came in, but not overpowering the music like in so many records laid down at Morrisound, but with a subtlety that made the tracks feel like they were running...away.

Living Tomb won't be the longest album you get this year, but it's likely to be on many end of year lists in about 11 months.

Vinyloscopy with Lords of the Trident

Who's ready to check back in with our super hero friends, Lords of the Trident?

Honestly, who else is getting concerned that we're going to be poked in the midsection with their powerful weapons and then we're going to have to ask the questions about our lives that we never really wanted to and then get the answers?!

Just me?

OK, moving on, Lords of the Trident are big fans of the spinning circles that send up those delicious analog sound waves that move straight into our ear holes.

Check it out!

1. Listening to Black Sabbath's eponymous debut the night I got it blew me away. What's the album that sounds the best on vinyl compared to digital sources?

Vinyloscopy with The Risk! Podcast's Kevin Allison

Kevin Allison
Before we get into it, yes, this is the same Kevin Allison who was on MTV's The State.

About 2 and a half years ago, I was sitting on a plane to San Francisco reading The Union of the State by Corey Stulce. It told the story of well, The State. At the end, it started talking about what the cast members did after the show ended. Allison ended up starting a podcast called Risk!. I'd never been much for podcasts and had never subscribed to one, but I figured, let's listen.

Well, we're a couple years on, and I've not missed an episode since then and I've read the Risk! Book as well. If you think This American Life is great, but it needs more...we'll call it  uncensored spice...then Risk! is probably right up your alley. Check it out on all the podcast apps.

Recently, Allison made mention of buying a turntable and we spoke briefly about his setup and such. It then occurred to me, let's find out more. The Vinyloscopy column has had loads of metal dudes giving us the what for, but now let's find out from someone who's new to all of this.

So, let's jump right in.

Road Warriors with Lords of the Trident

Lords of the Trident
Do you remember that amazing video game magazine that came out way back when?

It was called Nintendo Power.

No? Well, perhaps you're not quite as old as your friend and humble narrator. Well, What about that TV show, Home Improvement?

Oh, well maybe when you were in Primary School you caught an episode here and there right?

Well, those things and America's Lords of the Trident feature large amounts of power.

If you're interested how much ridiculous power they have, check out their latest DIY album HERE.

It could be overpowering, because they're power metal.

Get it?

Vinyl Review: "My Life of Steel and Concrete" by Quin Galavis

My Life of Steel and Concrete
It's kind of true confession time.

About five or so years ago I made a discovery. On my commute home, NPR's All Things Considered was discussing a documentary that was coming out about a man with OCD.

Up to that point, like many others, I made jokes about being OCD about this or that. It had never honestly occurred to me that I might have that particular mental illness.

As the gentleman talked about what his life was like and how he saw the world, I realized, that's kind of what I see.

The idea that it was abnormal to take someone not giving me a courtesy wave on the highway personally was so strange. That's how it always had been for me. Rudeness, inconsideration, etc they get me and as someone on the internet, I tend to get put off.
