Marigold Festival, Pekin Illinois

The Marigold Festival will be held here this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  I will not be attending this year.  It always draws a massive crowd and I don’t want to be in a large crowd for awhile.  Pekin is known as the Marigold Capital of the World.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekin,_Illinois

Pekin Illinois 2012 Marigold Festival

“The Marigold Festival was started in 1973 to honor one of Pekin's "favorite sons", Senator Everett Dirksen.  While in the United States Congress, Dirksen tried to have the marigold named as the national floral emblem. In support of Dirksen, the community began growing marigolds. While unsuccessful in the national flower contest, Dirksen's hometown of Pekin became known as the "Marigold Capital of the World".    [8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekin,_Illinois

I have mentioned before that the city I live in now is known as the Marigold Capital of the World.   The Marigold Festival begins this Friday and ends on Sunday.

Thunderstorms all around here this morning.  The weather radio first woke me up this morning at 4 AM with a severe thunderstorm warning.

Stay safe and be happy!!

Tolerable Tuesday…

The sun is shining brightly here in the heart of Illinois at the Marigold Capital of the world. http://bethmariesmainblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/10/marigold-capital-of-the-world%E2%80%A6/  also see http://www.pekinchamber.com/  Because of this I planted marigolds around the lamp post in my front yard.  I think marigolds are so pretty but they don’t smell very nice.  I think I know a few people like that.

I am hoping the marigolds perk up after a few days.  Plants are very expensive this year.

My tomato plants.   Big Boy on the left and Early Girl on the right.    And so this is my garden.  And now I am homesick for my garden at home.  ;-(

I have to leave soon as I have an appointment to get my hair cut and also an appointment with the dentist.  Hooray!!!

Stay safe and be happy!

It’s such a pretty world today..

look at the sunshine.  It is a glorious day for the start of the Marigold Festival here.  As I have noted before, Pekin is the Marigold Capitol of the world.  There all kinds of activities scheduled for today and tomorrow beginning with the parade this morning.  Dozens of tents selling all kinds of crafts and items are set up in the park next to the lagoon.

This is a photo I took of one of the craft tents last year.  Sadly my Cardinals have dropped the ball (pun intended) this year.  http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/standings  They are in second place behind the Milwaukee Brewers.  For my Wisconsin friends, I wish the Brewers well!!

I am busy cooking in the kitchen this morning.  My kids are coming over tomorrow and I am fixing chicken and stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and peach pie.  And then I will be so stuffed I will have to lie down and take a nap.

So, I need to cut this short and get back to the kitchen.  I hope you all have a peaceful weekend.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Thursday’s child…

has been out gallivanting around town.  First to get my hair cut, then to pay my cable and heating/electric bill.  Prices have gone up for everything.

It is beautiful out today, 61 degrees right now, to get in the mid 70s.  I have filled my planter with potting soil and filled up around the lamp in my front yard with new soil.  Last year I planted petunias, red, white and blue ones.  This year I am thinking about geraniums for the planter and marigolds for around the lamp since Pekin is the Marigold Capital of the world.

One thing I don’t like about marigolds is that they stink.  But that’s ok ‘cause I won’t be outside sniffing them.  Smile with tongue out

I need to close for now as I am getting ready to go to 8th Street Station aka Grumpy Pete’s for lunch.  I will be sure to eat a bite for you all.
