Another birthday come and gone…

and I marvel at the fact that the good Lord saw fit to let me have another birthday.  It was a lovely day too, in the 80s with sunshine.  Lunch at the Red Lobster was great.  I had the never ending shrimp special.  I had the parmesan shrimp and breaded shrimp with salad and baked potato and of course the cheddar bay biscuits.  So good!

It has been 3 weeks now since I had the surgery. On the day I was having surgery I sat in the waiting area with a young father.  He had cancer in the throat, tonsils, on the tongue and the lymph nodes in his neck.  He was having the same surgeon as I, Dr. Parrish.  We had a conversation and he told me that he had just recovered from an illness that he had been told would be terminal.  He didn’t tell me what it was and I didn’t ask.  I remember thinking at the time what a courageous guy he was and I told him that I would pray that he would be OK.

When I first went in to my assigned room the patient there was getting ready to leave.  She and her husband/boyfriend? were causing quite a disturbance and flounced out of the room in a huff.  After they were gone I watched the cleaning lady go through the drawers in the stand next to the bed.  She filled a garbage sack with bags of chips and other snacks. The windowsill also was loaded with cans of pop, etc.  The nurse later told me that this couple had almost cleaned their kitchen out.  Then the next morning I had a woman roommate who kept the bright lights on and the TV on 24/7.  I could hear her talking to her mother and she was sobbing.  By the 3rd day I told the doctor that I was ready to go home.

I see the oncologist on Monday and I will find out about the radiation.  That comes next and I will be glad when that is done.

Doing nothing today….

Today is my birthday so I am doing nothing.  My daughter is taking me to my favorite place for lunch, Red Lobster in Peoria.  I am hoping that the all you can eat shrimp special is still going on.

Valentine Birthday…

Happy birthday to my daughter and a happy Valentine’s Day to you all.

marcia2

My daughter will be celebrating her birthday at exactly 10:50 AM CST today.  I love all of these photos of her.  I appreciate her more each year.

It is now 34 days on the countdown till spring.    It is snowing like crazy here right now but they are saying only 1 – 2 inches.  One can only hope.

Have a lovely day.  I hope your sweetie brings you candy and flowers today or simply says I love you!  My sweetie used to get me a card and a heart shaped box of chocolates.  I miss that!!

Stay safe and be happy!!

A birthday and an anniversary…

Happy Birthday to my friend Paul in the Boston area.  If you have a minute please stop by and wish him a happy birthday.  Paul has been my friend for most of my 8 plus blogging years.  I am sure Arlene is taking him out to a super duper place to celebrate!

It is very easy for me to remember Paul’s birthday as it falls on the date of my wedding anniversary some 50 odd years ago.  Seems like only yesterday when Jim and I were young and starting out with absolutely nothing but each other, my old ‘53 pea green Plymouth and Jim’s motorcycle.  I will never forget the day.  It was snowing so there was no honeymoon, not that we could have afforded one anyway.  I hit the jackpot when I married Jim.  He was such a caring guy and he was like my dad in that he never met a stranger.  I honestly can’t remember one person that didn’t like him.  He had a great sense of humor and loved going to country music concerts with me.  We saw all of the popular acts.  We were even sitting in the Civic Center in Champaign Illinois when Loretta Lynn did her famous passing out act on the stage.  If you have ever seen the movie, Coal Miner’s Daughter you will know what I am referring to.

So let’s all celebrate Paul’s birthday and  my wedding anniversary.  Champagne is on the house!  And thanks Jim for being my guardian angel since December 1st, 2006!  I have had great need of one this year.

November 23, a very special day…

Today would have been my mom and dad’s 89th wedding anniversary!  I just found out from visiting one of my favorite bloggers  Nana Diana that today is also her son’s birthday.

daddy and mom 1963

This is how I remember my mom and dad.  This picture was taken in 1963.  They were not fancy people and my daddy never put on his suit unless it was for a wedding or a funeral.  My mom raised 8 kids (I was number 6) and it wasn’t easy for her at all.  I remember supper a lot of times as being bowls of milk and cornbread.  My dad was a truck driver and if times were good I remember Saturday lunch was a special treat.  Baloney and cheese sandwiches, strawberry pop and chocolate covered marshmallow cookies with raspberry filling.  To this day I love marshmallows and I always list it as my favorite candy.  I love those Nabisco chocolate pinwheel cookies too!

My dad was a very proud man.  He never took a handout from anyone so Christmas was always a lean time for us.  No one delivered a turkey or ham to our door because dad always said that he could provide for his family.  And he did the best that he could!  My mom tried to make homemade candy at Christmas time and would start making it a couple of months ahead of time.  She stored the candy in a 5 gallon can and we all knew not to touch it.  Below is a recipe from my recipe web site.

********************************************

Mom’s White Fudge

My mother used to start making candy about a month before Christmas. She would store the candy in a large can and keep it in a cool place. This was one of my favorites.

•3 cups sugar
•1 cup evaporated milk
•1 (7 ounce) jar marshmallow creme
•3/4 stick margarine
•1 (12 ounce) can angel flake coconut
•1 cup chopped nuts

Mix sugar, milk and margarine together and cook until mixture comes to a boil, stirring frequently. Boil for 5 minutes over medium heat stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in coconut and marshmallow creme, then add nuts. Stir until mixture starts to thicken. Pour into buttered pan. Cool before cutting. Makes about 2 pounds.

**********************************************

My mom never knew a stranger and would give a hug to anyone who came in our door.  Also offer refreshments of whatever we might have.  I miss you mom and daddy!  Happy Anniversary!!

Today I have a sore throat to go with the congestion.  If I don’t feel better on Monday I will see if I can get in to see the nurse practitioner or I will go to Urgent Care here at the hospital.

I hope today is good for us all.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Many Thanks…

for the birthday wishes and the lovely cards I received.  My daughter brought me lovely flowers a card and a birthday cake (my second cake) and tomorrow she and my SIL Mike are taking me to eat at Red Lobster.  I received a nice chunk of money from family which I proceeded to spend before it could burn a hole in my pocket.  Thank you to Paul my Boston friend who sent me several lovely shots of the lighthouse at Martha’s Vineyard.

001

The flowers from my daughter and son in law.  The cake is all gone because I had to eat a piece for each of you.  It was really good but I gained back a couple of the lost pounds.

Yesterday with the help and guidance of my Tennessee Twin I purchased an iPad 2 which is more than enough for me to start with.  I really would have enjoyed having that while I was stuck in the hospital with no visitors allowed.

I have an appointment this afternoon to see both my surgeon and my oncologist.  I have a whole page full of questions for them.  Monday I am having a CT scan.  I am a bit worried about that one.

Note for Happy One.  Yesterday was a hectic day for me and I didn’t get a chance to let you know that the blanket for little Lizzie was received amidst oohs and awes.  They all thought it was beautiful and the mittens for Addie adorable.  I have asked for a picture of Lizzie with the blanket.  I will send it along to you when I get it.

I hope you all have a truly Blessed weekend.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Short birthday post…

I want to wish my dear Tennessee Twin a happy birthday today.  She shares this birthday with me.  We first met I think it was exactly 8 years ago this month when I was blogging on Windows Live Spaces.  It was so much fun to find a fellow blogger who shared my birthday.  Not the year (I am older than her) just the day.  We are true twins at heart and share many likes and dislikes.  We also share a deep faith in God.

http://ramblingon-ramblingon.blogspot.com/   Please stop by today and wish my Twin a happy birthday.

This is the youngest pic I could find of me.  This was taken when I was in the 3rd grade.  There is a story about the dress I have on.  I have told it before and I will probably tell it again at a future date.

Have a wonderful day.  I will eat a piece of cake for you all.

Stay safe and be happy!!

The day after…

and no cooking of any kind for a few days.  I had a lovely visit with my son.  There were a lot of leftovers which I sent home with my kids.

After we ate my daughter took us to the boat where I proceeded to donate $30 which was $10 above my limit.  We had the  birthday cake after we got back from the boat.  I have been trying to remember the last time that my son had a birthday cake with his name on it.  Sorry I didn’t get a picture of it.
I was so tired after they all went home that I sat down in my chair with the heating pad on my back and fell asleep.  I love cooking for my kids but I am afraid I am just about as far as I can go with that,  I will treat everyone to a meal out the next time we get together.

I am sorry I missed visiting with you all yesterday.  I will try and get around to visit later this morning.  I am doing laundry and then I am needing bananas and milk from the store.
Have a wonderful weekend.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Monday…

and the beginning of a brand new week.  It is 30 degrees right now and freezing drizzle.  Weather advisory is out for slick roads until 10 AM.

At least I have seen one sign of spring.  The ground behind my back door and the cemetery has been covered with dozens of robins.  I always feel good when I see a robin.  Other than the robins I haven’t seen any sign at all of spring.

Saturday afternoon I went to the 4th birthday party for my great, great niece.  Unfortunately after I had taken only 2 pictures my camera battery died.

004

It was a gymnastic birthday party.  The 2 young ladies led the kids in all kinds of gymnastics for an hour.  Not all of the kids had arrived yet when I took this picture.

002

The table set for the kids.  I feel sorry for the moms when they took the kids home.  They had cupcakes and cake and a bag of candy and another bag of goodies.  A lot of kids with a sugar high I think.  I saw one little red headed girl eat 2 cupcakes and a piece of cake and then get into the bag of candy.

This will be a lazy day for me.  Tomorrow I have 2 doctor appointments and Wednesday morning I have the crown on my tooth finished.  Not to wish my life away but I will be glad to see Thursday.
Have a great week.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Happy Birthday Elvis…

Elvis would have been 78 years old today.  I remember the day,  August  16. 1977, that he died.  I remember thinking that if Elvis is mortal then I could die too.  I remember the National Enquirer picture of Elvis in his coffin that graced the front page of that gossip magazine.  He looked so bloated, nothing at all like the handsome young man that had all of the little teeny boppers screaming their heads off when he would wiggle.  Overeating and drugs were found to have caused his death.

http://oldies.about.com/od/elvisdeathfaq/f/elvisdeath.htm

I wasn’t a huge Elvis fan but I did like some of his songs.  His version of Blue Christmas that he did on his Hawaiian tour is my favorite song of his.

I remember when I was working at Chanute AFB in 1988 and it was announced that Chanute was one of the bases being closed.  The local radio station in Champaign redid his song “Don’t Be Cruel” and inserted the words “to the town of Rantoul.”  Rantoul IL is where Chanute was located.  I had a recording of the song at one time but it has long been lost.  Fortunately my husband had enough years in to take an early retirement.  I soon followed in 1989.

I am doing laundry while I am typing this and later on this morning I have an appointment for a haircut.  I have a dilemma here.  My favorite beautician left for another job and now I find that she is back in the salon I go to.  The lady who has been cutting my hair is an extremely nice lady but I do NOT like the way she cuts my hair.  How can I get my favorite back without hurting my present gal’s feelings?  HELP!!

I hope you all have a great day.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Happy Birthday…

to Paul,  one of my first blogging friends from Windows Live Spaces!  I always remember December 2nd as Paul’s birthday because it is also my wedding anniversary!  If you have a minute stop by and wish Paul a happy birthday while he is still young enough to read.  Winking smile

http://jumpingoutthewindows.blogspot.com/

It is a warm drizzly day in central Illinois.  The temp is 53 and to get up around 70 today.  Very unusual weather for us but I will take it.

My daughter and son in law are stopping by after lunch for homemade potato soup.  I have been hungry for some of that.

I am gearing up for a visit to my kidney/bp doctor on Wednesday.  I have a whole list of things to tell him.   I am still wearing the heart monitor, less than 2 weeks left on that.

I have been invited to a cookie exchange on the 13th.  Thank you to Liz.

I hope you all are have a wonderful day!

Happy Birthday to my sister Rae…

kit_a
What is a sister?
A sister is someone
who's been where you've been,
who knows you
and what you're about...
Someone you know
you can call if you need to
when something's
just not working out.
A sister is someone
who's more than just family
her friendship is one of a kind...
And the closeness you've shared
through life's laughter and tears
is the deepest
that you'll ever find.
I'm lucky to have a sister like you...
I wouldn't trade our special relationship
for anything in the world.
Nothing is more comfortable
or more reassuring than knowing
that you're always there.
And you make life so enjoyable
just by being yourself
You've always been the best kind of sister.
I just thought I'd say "thanks".

Rae is my only remaining sister.  She knows me better than anyone in the world.  She has held my hand and dried my tears many times.  I remember our teenage years, double dating and hanging out and watching each others back.  She has a heart of gold and never says no to any one who needs help.  She would give you the clothes off her back if you admired them.  I know  because I have been the recipient of some pieces of clothing I have admired.  She is on first name basis with many of the town officials and several personnel at the local television stations .  She is an untiring worker for the handicapped in several counties around her.  She donates her time to  these worthwhile causes.  I don’t get to see her very often because she lives 500 miles from me in West Virginia.

Love you Rae,

May God truly bless you and may this be one of the happiest days of your life.

Happy Birthday today 3 June 2012…

to my brother in law Hugh.  I find it so hard to believe that he has reached the age  of ?.  Seems like only yesterday!

Hugh was born on June 3rd  in Kenova WV.  We met Hugh in the spring of 1955 while he was attending Western Illinois University in Macomb after his stint in the United States Navy.

Hugh attended grade school in Kenova.  50 years later to the day he accompanied his granddaughter to the very same school to begin the first grade.  Her mother and her grandmother (Rae) were both working.  Since Hugh was able to take a day of vacation from his job he got the honor of seeing his granddaughter safely to the first day of her first year of school.

Hugh and Rae’s home now is just 4 blocks from the house where Hughie was born.

Rae and Hugh were married on November 4, 1955.  Through the years the four of us were very close.  Hugh and Jim were like brothers, a fact that Hugh mentioned when he spoke at Jim’s memorial service.  I have always thought of Hugh as my brother instead of brother in law.

Happy Birthday…

to my son Jim.  I hope this is a good day for you.  I am sorry we couldn’t be together today on your birthday.  Your visit last week was special.  We all had a good time.

This year your birthday falls on Easter Sunday.  What a glorious day you are sharing with Christians all over the world.  He is risen.

Love you Jim,

Mom

Frosty morning…

here in the heart of central Illinois.  The temp is a sunny 35 right now and to get in the mid 60s today.  There was patchy frost here this morning but no hard freeze like was predicted.  The furnace has been running this morning and it is warm in the house.

I have been invited to go with my daughter and son in law to my SIL’s brothers home to eat on Easter Sunday.  That will be fun to watch the little kids hunt the Easter treats.  I will be taking macaroni and cheese and some other unknown thing (yet to be decided) with me.

I haven’t decided yet what I want to do today.  There are 14 garage sales listed in the Pekin paper today.  I don’t know the city well enough to go out hunting them. I do know my way around well enough now to find my way home if I get lost.  When I first moved here I got lost a lot.

Easter Sunday(April 8) is my son’s birthday. We had his celebration last week when he came home.  I will miss seeing him on his birthday.

I hope you all have a nice day.  Stay safe and be happy!!

Bleary eyed..

and not liking it very much this morning.  The c-pap machine is very quiet so I have no complaints there.  The mask is causing the bottom of my nose to be very sore and I can’t get the moisture adjusted right so I am constantly waking up in the night to take the mask off to get a drink of water.  I plan to call the company this morning.  I know I can exchange the mask FOC for 30 days.

The gentleman who brought the machine to me did take the time to explain it thoroughly along with some funny stories about other customers and the experiences they had.  One lady was so nervous about getting the ‘thing’ that she barfed right in their office.  And the stories go on.  lol

001

This is what I have.  If you want a better look at the ‘thing’ just click on the picture.

It is another lovely day.  67 degrees and to get up into the 8os again today.  I am loving this weather although a cool down is on tap for the weekend.

I will be cooking the next two days as my son will be home on Saturday for an early birthday celebration.  His birthday is April 8.  Menu for Saturday is baked spiral sliced ham, potato salad, baked beans, green bean casserole (I am always happy for a reason to make green bean casserole), and my daughter is making a pie.  If I missed anything just let me know and I will fix it.  Of course I have to fix the lemon cream cheese bars that are his favorite.  That means another store visit as I need to buy lemon juice.  I do miss my son since I moved farther away from him.  It is a pretty good jaunt from here to Chicago.

Have a wonderful day and do stay safe and be happy!!
