Connect with your history
Sutherland Shire Libraries
March is Women's History Month and we want to help you connect with the women in your ancestry. Use all the tools at your fingertips to advance your Family History research.
Who do you think you are? has made Ancestry.com widely known as a family history research tool. But regardless of what the advertising suggests, it does not have it all.
The library provides you access to various Family History databases, including Ancestry.com, which could broaden your depth of knowledge about members on your tree or even stimulate new branch growth!
FindMyPast has a great range of material covering most countries of the world, however with a particular focus on the records of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Records of women can be found among any of the resources indexed.
Women can be particularly hard to trace so resources which point directly to women can be a boon. Calais Laceworker Immigrants to South Australia and South Australian Destitute Women are a couple of the indexes available via FindMyPast.
The Biographical Database of Australia is designed to help researchers find one person in thousands, to avoid confusing persons of the same name and to track individuals across time. It aims to gather data from a wide variety of original manuscripts and bring them all together under the individuals name. It's a great starting point, for sifting out those with the same name who are not your ancestor. Don't forget to try both of your female ancestors surnames if you know them.
British Newspaper Archive has over 18.5 million digitised newspaper pages from 743 UK papers. Browse by place of publication, title and/or date range. Search by name. Newspaper articles can provide amazing detail about peoples lives. They were the social media of the times. If anything happened it was recorded in the papers. Shipping records, arrests, trials, weddings, parties and advertisements can provide clues to locating people. Just have a browse and get a feel for the big news items of the times which can provide clues as to why an ancestor chose to leave all they knew and travel to Australia.
Sydney Morning Herald Archives has digitised reproductions of every edition between the years 1955 and 1995. Use this to find personal notices detailing births, deaths and marriages not yet released by the NSW Registry of Birth, Deaths and Marriages. Birth records are not released to the public until 100 years have passed, marriages must wait 50 years and deaths 30 years. This is not done just to annoy family historians, but for good privacy reasons. So personal notices are a boon!
Ancestry Library Edition boasts over 1.5 million names in over 4000 databases and at that it is the biggest single source of genealogical information. New South Wales, Australia, Wives and children of Irish Convicts, 1825 -1840, Principal women of the Empire: Australia and New Zealand are two resources dealing specifically with women, however females are documented in all other resources as well.
Come in to one of the Sutherland Shire Libraries to search and see the original documents supplied via the library's subscription.

Who do you think you are?
Sutherland Shire Libraries
Track down the truth during Family History Month.
Discovering the past is an adventure which can take people to many places, they never dreamt of going. Hopefully their local library is not one of them!
Your local Sutherland Shire Library provides access to many resources which will help you on the journey of discovery, and staff who are able to assist along the way.
You can see what the library's resources, have on offer from the comfort of your home, however all (but Trove) require you to be in one of the Shire's libraries to retrieve the documents relating to any search.
Find the Sutherland Shire Library home page, look for Digital Collections > Family History.
There are nine different databases linked on the Family History page:
Ancestry Library Edition, Biographical Database of Australia, British Newspaper Archive, FindMyPast, Internet History Resources, Sydney Morning Herald Archives and Trove.
Most allow you to see the range of information they have and search, but restrict access to the original documents attached to any search results.
Come into the library to get free access to those original records!!
Ancestry has original documents which can provide clues to a persons life.
Take the surname Williams. Military records, offered up this document, from the New Zealand WWI Nominal Rolls. For each man enlisted, it provides his Company, Serial No. Rank, Full name, Occupation and Name & Address of Next of Kin. Use this information to further explore military and civilian records.
Or follow the fortunes of those in the care of government, like Rosa Mooney. She was just 4 3/4 years of age when she was "deserted by her father, mother dead", April 3rd 1865. (Birth date Jul 1860?) Rosa is a sister to ?? and Elizabeth ?? . On December 29th 1874, she was apprenticed to Mr J.B. Evans of Candelo, at the age of thirteen. Newspapers of the time could fill in what happened next? Trove may be worth a look.
FindMyPast is another database with original documentation that can help to fill in the gaps.
Visit your library during Family History Month, and talk to staff to get started.

Language Matters
Sutherland Shire Libraries
Mango Languages and Road to IELTS - Preparation and Practice, are online tools provided to Sutherland Shire Library members.
As Harmony Day is on March 21st, it seemed a perfect opportunity to highlight our language learning tools, along with our special Multicultural Storytimes. (See details below)
When would you use these language learning tools?
Then this is when you would use these online tools.
Mango Languages online offers courses in 57 non-English languages.

and English courses designed for speakers of 17 languages, as well as Latin, Greek - Koine, Ancient Greek and Biblical Hebrew.
Courses can be used on a PC or a Mango App is available for use on tablet or smartphone, Android or Apple devices.
Mango uses real-life situations and actual conversations to more effectively teach a new language. By
listening to and repeating after material designed from native conversations, users not only learn the individual words and phrases, they will know how they're used in practical situations and conversations.
Everyone is asked to create a profile the first time you use it, from then on each time you return you will be asked to login. This allows for your progress through the course(s) to be tracked so you always know where you are up to and how well you are doing. Lessons are divided into short chunks and do not have to be completed in order. They can be skipped through until you find the situation to match your immediate needs.
The International English Language Testing System, Road to IELTS - Preparation and Practise courses come in two levels, General or Academic.
Road to IELTS - General training measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and texts reflect both workplace and social situations. It includes 120 hours of work on the essential components of the test, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking. The program simulates the exam itself.
Road to IELTS - Academic training measures English language proficiency needed for an academic, higher learning environment. The tasks and texts are accessible to all test-takers, irrespective of their subject focus. One of the challenges of IELTS preparation is enabling learners to interpret and describe charts and tables. Road to IELTS - Academic includes a wealth of these graphics and more than 70 exercises. The program includes detailed explanations of each question type in each part of the exam, and tips on how best to tackle the tasks.
The distinction between the Academic version and the General Training version lies in the subject matter of the Reading and Writing components.
To be clear, one cannot sit the test, using these library tools. They are designed to prepare learners for what will be expected in the tests, so learners can sit the tests as well prepared as possible.
