The guest artist at Sutherland Library during July and August is Cheryl Kirby.
Cheryl is a longtime resident of Sutherland Shire. After leaving school at 15 Cheryl's first job was as an airbrush artist at the Empire Art Company in Darlinghurst. Part of her job was to attend East Sydney Technical College Art School, something that she really loved.

Cheryl's later career saw her move into commercial advertising in magazines and newspapers.  She took a break from paid work to raise a family but continued to study art part time at the School of Fashion and Art at Gymea Technical College. Cheryl also ran a small business designing and printing from home. Cheryl joined Friends of Hazelhurst in 2014.

Come to Sutherland Library and see a selection of acrylics, graphite and water colour pencil works by this very talented local artist.

Starting on the weekend of the 4/5 July 2015, Sutherland and Cronulla libraries will be extending their opening hours. The increased hours are in direct response to increased demand from the community.

Cronulla Library will be open from 9:00am until 4:00pm on Saturdays
(an extension of 4 hours on the current closing time of 12:00noon)

Sutherland Library will be open from 11:00am until 5:00pm on Sundays
(an extra 2 hours on the current 12:00noon - 4:00pm hours)

Sutherland Library is fortunate to have an exhibition of  beautiful photographs by Colin Paul Olive. Colin is also a metalworker and sculptor. Colin is a keen mountaineer and adventurer and it is through these pursuits that he is able to photograph many remote wilderness areas both in Australia and New Zealand.  In the summer months he turns his camera to urban scenes in the local area.

Sutherland Library is pleased to have an exhibition of some of the works of two artists who attend classes at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Art Centre.

Albert Franks discovered his passion for art after immigrating to Australia in 1970. Albert is a retired electrical engineer but his love of art was fostered in his youth by his father who was an amateur painter and Albert's first art tutor. Albert has completed art classes at Port Hacking High School, Julian Ashton School of Art and Hazelhurst Gallery. Albert still enjoys attending art classes at Hazelhurst with talented like minded people from all walks of life. The painting on the right called 'Night Watchman' is not currently on display due to space constraints but will be swapped in April with another of Albert's works on display. In the meantime come and see a selection of this talented artist's works.

Gerald Hawkins achieved a General Certificate of Art in the UK in 1961. During the winding down of his career as a Building Economist in 2009, Gerald attended art courses at Bankstown Community Centre and Hazelhurst Gallery. Gerald works mainly in oils but occasionally uses water colours and pastels. His paintings can be found in private collections in the UK, Belgium, Samoa and Australia. The painting on the right is called 'Samoan Coast, Post Tsunami'. This painting and other works by these two talented artists can be seen in the lounge area of Sutherland Library during March and April.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Friends through Folk Art Guild, Sutherland Library is pleased to be exhibiting a selection of works by some of the talented local members.  This group is based in the Sutherland and St George area and began as a group of friends who shared an interest in folk art. Their works are based on traditional styles of European folk art.  This form of art was used to decorate functional objects as a means of brightening up homes. In Australia today folk art is  mostly used for decorative purposes. The works will be on display throughout January and February.

Robyn Gosbell has been a highly acclaimed artist for many years and is well known in the Sutherland Shire. She is very observant artist who loves nature and expresses herself  by sensitively using light and shade in her scenic paintings in oil, pastel and acrylic.

Robyn came to the attention of well known Sydney artist, Robert Greive when she was just 12 and became his pupil.  She then completed her Art Certificate course achieving first place. Robyn has had many successful local and regional art exhibitions and has won many prizes and acclamation in Australia and overseas.

Many of her works hang in collections worldwide. Robyn enjoys travelling around Australia and overseas in search of new places to discover and new ways of expressing herself.  She also writes for art journals, teaches art and judges art shows.

This must see sample of Robyn's varied styles of art including landscapes and still lifes are on display at Sutherland Library during November and December.

 Sutherland Library is pleased to welcome back local artist Regina Nazar.

Regina studied art at Penrith TAFE, University of Western Sydney and Macquarie Univeristy. During 1994 Regina was artist-in-residence-at the Riversdale property of Arthur Boyd's Bundanoon Trust. In 1995 and 2005 she was selected as a finalist for the Portia Geach Memorial Award .

A selection of Regina's artworks featuring Fraser Island and the 12 Apostles are on display during May and June in the lounge area of Sutherland Library.

Sutherland Shire artist, Kenneth B Harrison has an exhibition of some of his artworks at Sutherland Library, during the month of February.

Works on display include line drawings of Aboriginal activist Patrick Dodson, cricket legend Glenn McGrath and other famous people. There are also two watercolour paintings, one of Cathy Freeman and a bright painting called Bird in Paradise.

Kenneth's works are on display in the rear lounge area of Sutherland Library until the end of February.
