Building Bonanza

The first week of the school holidays has been full of action at Sutherland Shire Libraries. At Sutherland, Miranda and Engadine Libraries some very creative kids came to our Building Bonanza sessions. The kids were given an hour to build what they like with the building blocks. Some great creations were built including a beach, a garage, cars, buildings and swimming pools. All finished designs were displayed for all to admire. It was an enjoyable activity and for the adults it was great to see how their kids could be so creative. Check out more photos on Flickr.

Miranda Library Week Wrap Up!

Hello out there blog readers!  Library week (23rd – 29th of May) was a success at Miranda library this year with more than 100 people getting tickets to the Miranda library week hamper of goodies. The happy hamper winner, who was a first time visitor to Miranda Library, spent 20 minutes driving around the Westfield car park and rang 3 times to identify the exact Library location.  He walked in the Library to pick up a book 5 minutes before it was due to close on a rainy evening.  Staff were told that he had been a library member for a while, and that this is the first time that he got a library raffle ticket and 1st time won something in 36 years.  Here is a picture of Becky from Miranda library presenting the prize to the lucky man.

We also had something for children over the course of library week with the National Simultaneous Storytime held on Wednesday the 25th at 11am.  Two kindergarten classes from Miranda public school came to listen to “Feathers for Phoebe”.

Just because Library week is over doesn’t mean that nothing is coming up at Miranda! There are lots of activities coming up for school holidays. Just check out our events calendar for details.

Calling All Knitters - Knit In 2010

'Cold humanity is our concern, people caring about other people.'
Wrap with Love began in 1992 with an idea to encourage knitters/crocheters to create squares and wraps that can be sent to some of the millions of people in the world affected by cold weather.

Participating Sutherland Shire Libraries would like to invite those interested in joining this annual event, to meet with fellow knitters on Monday June 7 at 9am to 11am.

For those not able to join us on the day, completed squares or wraps can be dropped off until the end of July at any Sutherland Shire Library or Sutherland Community Centre.

Project Gen Y @ the Library

This survey has now finished. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Sutherland Shire Libraries in conjunction with a UTS student project is conducting a survey of Gen Y library customers.

Are you between the ages of 10 and 26?
Fill in a GenY @ the Library survey and help us to better understand your library needs.

Gen Y is a unique generation in that they have developed and grown up in a period of rapid technological changes.

The objective of the GenY @ the Library project is to gain a better understanding of the Gen Y library customers in relation to their attitudes towards the library and expectations regarding the information products and services that the library holds now and in the future.

The survey will be conducted at all branches of Sutherland Shire Libraries between 8th and 28th September 2008.

RFID Coming to Sutherland Shire Libraries

Sutherland Libraries are moving to a system of tracking materials called Radio Frequency Identification. RFID is a fast, efficient way to track, locate and manage library resources. RFID technology is used in many places such as tracking baggage at airports and postal deliveries.

What will RFID mean to you?

With RFID you can:

  • check out multiple items simultaneously.
  • avoid queues if you do not require staff attention.
  • allow library staff to be redirected to more customer focused services such reference assistance and special events.
Your library will soon be closed for a few days to allow for changes to be made in preparation for the switch to RFID. During the closures there will be some redesign of the circulation desks and entries to the library and new self checkers will be installed.

Closure dates

We apologise for any inconvenience during closures and hope you understand that these changes are being made in the interest of improving our services to you.

Library Lovers' Day @ Miranda Library

After 142 entries in the Library Lovers' Day competition it seems that Pride and Prejudice is the most popular book as voted by visitors to Miranda library. The majority of books nominated were novels but there were a few non-fiction titles such as Hazel's Journey by Sue Pieters-Hawke. Eric Carle's, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, ate it's way into the competition and people's love of language surfaced with Beginner's Chinese being a favourite. Our customers were happy to enter the competition, many finding it difficult to nominate one favourite and at least one person writing that they "just love books".

Library Lovers' Day WinnerThe succesful library lover was a local resident and library member and was very excited when told they won the flower arrangement. Their favourite book was Matthew Flinders' Cat by Bryce Courtenay. The most nominated books and authors were:

  2. The Da Vinci Code
  3. Matthew Flinders' Cat
  4. Middlemarch
